This video give examples of summarizing and asking open-ended questions in the context of the role play of an initial meeting between a psychologist/counselor and a client.

I think it's important for the counselor to remember to use Open-ended questions as the title of the video suggests. There are several questions she begins with "Can". For example, one was "Can you tell me about..." John could have very easily answered, Yes or No. Dropping the "Can" and simply starting with "Tell me more about..." maintains the open-ended questioning practice that aids in quality information gathering. :)

This is a great therapeutic session…the client already started laughing and cheering up….the therapist on the other hand seems stressed and solemn…(not to say that they have to be giggly etc

Yay this is the best one I've seen, not just repeating what they said but asking questions too. Really good :)

No particular counselling model. I just wanted to show the use of summarizing and open-ended questions.

This is quite good. The only suggestion I would have is that maybe there should be a very small table in the middle of both of them. If I was a male I might be quite intimidated by the counsellors bare legs being so close to me and he did have sweaty palms. Maybe he was a little nervous. Just a thought by no means a criticism.

Hey Margie. I also found the video informative. I'm very new to counselling techniques and I can understand how a table between the counsellor and client might provide the feeling of a safer environment for some clients, but I'd caution against assuming a male's reaction to bare legs in the room will be sexual in nature. I promise you faithfully, it's a myth that we guys think about nothing but sex. :)

I thought she was about to do a Sharon stone impersonation ! No problem with using the words “can you”. Yes , technically it’s a closed question but if going to answer just yes or no you ask for elaboration . If no info is forthcoming you have no business counseling him!

He seems nervous. Perhaps the counsellor"s clothing could have been more appropriate for a counselling session....

+66Freesia Yeah. I think I (a 66 yr old male) would have been uncomfortable opposite that dress in a counselling session. Good video though, helpful.

She's weirdly close to him and in his space. Confrontational, intrusive and overly intense body language. Horrible. Sitting more side by side would be better.
