So true man, I'm European and we have 30-40% taxes, capital gain tax (and it's super convoluted and hard to calculate and pay your own taxes) expensive and low quality transportation ( e.g. In London area annual subway travelcard is ~5k sgd annual), no hawker&foodcourts to enjoy cheap eating outside(eating outside = expensive), extremely hard to find job at a good international company because of competition, when we move out we need to share house with multiple people even for "well paid" jobs while in our 30s, barely no house subsidies. If preparing well, like you explained, Singaporeans have opportunities that most of the rest of the world don't have, but I understand it's hard to realize how good you have it when you don't know how hard it is somewhere else.

I recently started watching your videos and I love them. I am a Singaporean who started earning 1.3k salary after NS with a diploma. I invested $100 a month for 3 years. I studied part time and paid for my own bachelor degree and masters degree using my gains from my investment. I now live a very comfortable life in a very good company.i get around 1k dividends every 3 months and I have zero debt other than hdb which I rather call as an investment rather than a debt. If you live within your means now you can live other people's dream later. People want everything to be given to them from the start without doing anything and that's the problem.

The truth of being a sad Malaysian has been spoken. Life is hard, pandemic strikes and makes it even more difficult for teenagers to survive. No to mention they still have to buy a house one day. The solution to this? Hi Singapore. I rejected a RM4k+ job and settle down for a 3.5K+sgd job in Singapore and live happily after. The rest is history.

As someone who worked and lived in both countries, your points are spot on. In general Singaporeans have much more advantage: Singapore tax is lower, provides fantastic healthcare (sure it is "private" but a medicare, medisafe with a private insurance is sufficient to meet healthcare needs), 2-3x higher purchasing power and has a great government that you know your currency value won't slump in future. If you are young adult living with family, you do not have huge recurring expenses you will have a huge advantage ahead, yet I saw my peers who earn similar/ less than me splurge on renting a BMW for $1.6k a month and spend on things that are less essential, buy gongcha after every meal etc. Having said that, as a developed country, the opportunity to start own business is also less in SG vs MY. But that shouldn't be a deterring factor nor a huge disadvantage to be financially free.

Many are addicted to spending due to want of instant gratification. Saving money is an alien concept to them. However, the path to financial freedom is always to spend less, save more and invest. People want to sidestep the saving process and jump into the investing part by leveraging on margin - it’s a dangerous game that cuts both ways. That’s how people get seriously burnt when things don’t turn out as expected.

An understated benefit of working in Singapore is that the income tax rate is one of the lowest in the region (or perhaps the world) and there is no tax on capital gain, which definitely assists in building wealth
@1MW9
@1MW9 3 жыл бұрын
that is because Singaporeans pay the highest rates of implicit taxes through other areas like HDB and CPF. Low income tax rate is fancy, but not absolute. If I am taxed 99% of income, and the 1% remaining is enough for me to live a luxurious life, then its better than being taxed 1%, but unable to cope with expenses with the remaining 99% take home salary

@@1MW9 What do you mean? Even hdb loan interest rate is just 2.6% which pretty much the rest of the world can only dream of and HDB are NOT expensive just compare the prices of HDB to other major cities like london or new york its not even close! CPF yes but our employers are also forced to contribute 17% to it thats basically free extra money for housing,retirement or medical expenses! CPF life is also really good scheme you dont get that kinds of returns anywhere else. Now the downside of CPF is the LOW interest rates from the government as compared to what you can earn from investing, the government only gives 2.5%-6% depending on which account and if you have extra interest compared to 10% on the S&P 500! Still,I dont get your point on HDB and CPF being "implicit taxes" pls elaborate durther,the other benefits of HDB and CPF makes up for this HUGE downside.

That is so true on the winning prize money part. I remember hearing on radio, the DJ asking contestants what would they do with the $10k? (Can't recall the amount, but definitely 5 digit prize money) if they won. NONE talked about investing, setting aside the money to grow the money. ALL just say spend here spend there spend spend spend then like you say, go back to complaining no money. I was quite shocked as $10k is a really decent amount to kick off some form of investing.

Hey hey, from Malaysia as well. KL boy. I totally agree that living costs in KL relative to SG (relative to salaries) is higher. You also don't need a car in SG which is something that astonishes me till today. Right away save so much money on petrol, insurance etc. Cai fun also cheaper in SG. Eating out also cheaper. All relative to salary la. Yes, you can live in a cheap town like Ipoh or Taiping, but there is no economic opportunity in those towns. SG is also fantastic for wealth building. Lower taxes than MY and no capital gains tax means every SG person is at an advantage compared to most of the world. Wedding wise, do you really need a grand wedding? My SG wife and I married in a small ceremony and saved $$. Need to convince in laws a bit la, but if you show the money saved, am sure anyone reasonable will come around. And car...why buy? So ex sia. Take grab better. My in law got baby also take grab or taxi. Cheaper than owning a car.

Desire in material as weighted comparison is not feasible comparing country to country. What SG went through during the 70s to 90s, average Singaporean don't consume internationally imported food apart from ASEAN food & buying expensive imported stuff like a PC, colour TV or VHS. You have to compare country's wage vs living expenses within it's history itself not with a 1st world country neither any emerging country, it's irrelevant. Decades ago the average wages vs average living expenses here, the gap is much closer then today. Don't blame on the desire of Iphone or international imported branded items.

Hmmm agree that the original thread owner view that Singaporean men life is tough is unfair. But there are some point that is true, like the 2 years NS and 10 yrs ICT, i dont think Malaysian will understand how disruptive it can be. To be frank Msian can easily come to Singapore to work as most employer welcome them as our culture are very similar. But as an average sinkie, there is very little place to go as most countries will protect their own citizens. I mean if im a msian, its a no brainer to come Singapore to work for the FX. I guess being Singaporean have its perk and cons.

I disagree. Singaporeans can choose to work in private sector, civil service, even armed forces. Can open your own business too. Can work and live locally or abroad. The issue is some singaporeans never discover their own talent, and forgot that all actions or inaction has consequences. Some singaporeans like to complain and blame too much until they cannot see the opportunities before them.

With the income earned in SG (unlike KL), it is very much possible to save up and kick start investing, thanks to the relative dollar standard of living. It will take months if not years to build that kind of sum in KL to have any impactful investment returns taking into account opportunity cost and compounding.

There is a group of singaporeans who are complacent, entitled, spoonfed and dependent, due to capable and effective govt. LKY called them First Class Grumblers and Champion Complainers. Some GenZ young singaporeans have them as parents. Aiyoh, sia suay. Anyway, I have found these principles relevant for singapore life: 1. You born poor it is not your fault. But if you die poor, it is totally your fault. 2. Just because you cannot do it, does not mean it cannot be done. Don't keep blaming govt if you never take action. 3. Don't grow up into someone who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. ie. complain, complain, complain. 4. If you cannot keep your room tidy and go to work on time, don't talk about changing the world.

wait...you are comparing the cost of living in the capital of Malaysia to the cost of living in the country of Singapore. Sure, Singapore is a city state. But in Malaysia, you can dramatically reduce your cost of living by simply living elsewhere in Malaysia. There is no such option in Singapore.
@KelvinLearnsInvesting
@KelvinLearnsInvesting 3 жыл бұрын
You can't simply live elsewhere in malaysia, because the jobs are mainly located in city areas, like KL. But in Singapore, the country is small enough to live at city fringe, like Bedok, or Jurong. At most you add 10-30 minutes to your travelling time.

Any big country will always have the majority of economic opportunities in major cities which are expensive to live in anyway. I think the one advantage Malaysia has is that you can move to Taiping or Ipoh for retirement after finishing your earning days. But from a retiring perspective, SG has more support systems in place than places like Taiping and Ipoh. Polyclinics, subsidised public transport etc which you will appreciate as you grow older.

@@ihxz re: ...can go outside smelly smelly find $1k+ job... If you keep blaming govt and have bad attitude, your pay will remain low for long time. But do you actually work in skilled job, or you BS king? Are you in NS? How much do you contribute to your household expenses? Or you living rent-free with parents and eating free food?

@@scbchong6964 yeah I'm just cherry picking some... good for those that don't need to work to support family. Blaming govt? Are u a pap supporter? I'm just saying NS is dragging guys down 2 years. U come out society tell people u know how survive in jungle/whatever u learn in NS vs work experience. People value which more? Want me to go more in-depth? Girls now don't even want to give birth, how are they contributing to TFR? Yet they calling for gender equality... end up what happen? Govt have to bring in FT. FT come take our job, end up whose fault? U ownself decide... maybe is cause most of sg guy behkan? if u realize a lot marry foreign girls while local girls(majority) remain single. Girls & foreigners 2 years of CPF/education/ work education. As a guy, u go out how? Imagine u boss who u want hire: 1. Sg girl, degree, 2 years work experience, no reservist 2. CECA / FT, degree, can pay them lower, no reservist, years of work experience more than both sg guy/girl 3. Sg guy, fresh grad degree, need reservist, no work experience and foreigners are so much more hardworking than Singaporeans, where they are from, msia or not cuz of currency exchange rate. Pretty sure the answer is clear who the boss would want to hire.

What I sense from most Singaporeans nowadays is that they have this very closed and fixed mindset. Haven't even try and think its not possible already or already submit themselves to the path of least resistance, which is to complain, do nothing and blame external circumstances, find excuses and not make an attempt to further improve on their existing situations. In this case, how to succeed? Most of the times, it's only a matter of how bad you want to achieve your goals only, and whether you are willing to pay the price for it. As the saying goes, there is no free lunch in this world. *DISCLAIMER: Referring to your typical average healthy human being scenario with no special or unique circumstances. Just putting it out here first.

Hello Kelvin, would you consider money spent on insurance and mortgage savings? Otherwise 70% is quite tough for an average Singaporean. P.s. another great video as always 👍🏻

Insurance yes, mortgage no. Hmm, for me, i saved on insurance by using term plan

Definitely not reasonable to be saving 70% as an average singaporean but thats the far out one,40% would be very doable for most people and that would still only take 22 years,probably 20 with slightly more. So if you start working in your early to mid 20s,you can theorically retire in your early to mid 40s.

Correct...so many whinny babies complain complain complain about so many things then go back to where they were...don't want to sacrifice a bit to make a difference... happens to some of my colleagues also, already poor but must eat fine dinning and take grab to work, and mock at me for being frugal. Well I spend 100$ only a month apart from the bills must be paid. But I feel the satisfaction when looking at my portfolio growing month by month.
