If you don't have time to be an au pair for a full year or simply want to get a taster for what it's like before you commit to one city or one family for a long period of time, being a summer au pair may be a good way for you to dip your toes in without diving into the deep end completely.
However, just know that there are multiple pros and cons with such an experience. We've laid out a few for you to help you decide whether such an experience is right for you, or whether it's better to sign up to be an au pair long term and skip summer completely!
Let us know what your opinions of summer au pairing are in the comments. We'd love to hear from you!
Cons:
- You could find yourself working for 10 hours straight (make sure to ask for some time off and check out previous video: )
- You're still on an au pair "salary" - so you're just getting pocket money.
- Sometimes feeling stuck - staying at a vacation home means there isn't much to do and you can't easily escape.
- Being surrounded by your host family all the time means being completely immersed in the language which can be EXHAUSTING, especially if your language level is low.
Pros:
- Great way to travel, soak up some culture and get out of your home town.
- Being given more money to explore and enjoy the city by your host parents! They should want to help you give their child a great day - so more trips to the zoo/museum/ice cream parlour for you!
- Going away to a very fancy all-inclusive resort/home/cruise you can't afford for yourself & they should be paying for everything. Enjoy!
- Being completely immersed in a language for a couple of months is a great way to quickly learn!
Thank you so much to everyone who watches, comments, likes and subscribes - we really really appreciate it!
Unfortunately, we currently can't answer every single question or comment we receive, but we do always make sure to add ideas and queries to our video list!

I’m staring my au pair year in Paris this August. Your videos have been an absolute life saver! I’ll have my APOP bucket list in hand when I get off my flight from Australia. Thank you, Hannah and Edwina 😊

Hey girls! Thanks for always putting out amazing and useful content as usual; it's appreciated as always. I'm planning to au pair soon, and I'm so excited. There's just one thing I'm not really finding any clear information on. Can I purchase a one way ticket to France on a longstay visa? I know you usually need to show proof of onward movement at immigration, but I'm wondering if that also applies to persons with a longstay visa. I'm just kinda worried. I just find it a hassle, and quite the expense to buy a round-trip ticket, and then have to change dates due to not being able to buy a return ticket for a year away. Your input will be greatly appreciated!

I’m going to be an Au Pair in Paris starting in September. I would really love to meet both of you! I’ve been an Au Pair in Italy twice, and I used to always watch your videos. Will you both be in Paris this year too? I wonder if we could meet?!❤️ But this is the internet so I understand if you can’t agree to meet a stranger!:) Anyways, love your videos and they’ve been really helpful especially with the visa process:)

As I've just graduated, for me personally my upcoming summer au pair experience will be the "perfect" possibility to decide whether I want to do a full year abroad next or start studying at a university. I'm still torn between the two options & therefore my summer will hopefully be a good compromise between starting university in October and having an adventure abroad that I wouldn't want to miss! :) did that make sense? :D

My host family is lovely, but there has been a bumpy ride with the visa process and miscommunication and expenses and currently they have been not as talkative as usual, I don't know if it is due to Ramadan. But now I am concerned if I should change my host family for back up. I do not feel secure. They told me to use a personal visit visa and not a work visa now and they have delegated that I should formulate the contract and they really have not found time to do it. They have made several mistakes in the visa process. and I have incurred costs and used my own money and I quit my job. and I am scared that they are disconnecting. I don't know

Amy Isaacs where country are you going to ? I you don't feel secure anymore and the family didn't make the contract you should feel free to look for another family (there's always more family than au pair so don't worry about that). It's a lot more complicated to change family when you already there than before...so if you donnot feel safe anymore, i advise you to look for another family.

Maks thank you for your reply. I think it was just my anxiety and the silence from them made me panic. But I have just been informed that my host family has obtained my visa and everything is set, so far they are the most genuine people I have come across. I will be going to Saudi Arabia.
