Join us for our first special Summer Edition of Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown! The format is a bit different from our usual episodes, but we think you'll enjoy them nonetheless. Mandy Teefey (Co-founder and Co-CEO of Wondermind, Producer of 13 Reasons Why, Selena Gomez’s mom) stops by to discuss the origin of her mental health platform, Wondermind, and its mission to destigmatize and democratize mental health. She opens up about being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and her tips for breaking up hyperfocus for those like herself living with ADHD and trauma. Mandy explains the importance of maintaining mental fitness and the benefits of being out in nature. We then pivot to an extended breakdown featuring just Mayim and Jonathan where they break down their “overt” and “covert” mental health hacks, from practicing good sleep hygiene and being in touch with sensory sensitivities, to hitting the social reset button and re-examining our relationships with social media.

That is the sweetest episode I have seen from you two, Mayim and Jonathan! Of course, the information was valuable, as always, but what struck me was the tenderness and appreciation you have for each other as you expressed your different temperaments (as in: “a person’s nature, especially as it affects their behavior”) and your willingness to not only examine but to integrate those differences to make sense out of life. That also supports mental health not only in you two, but in us viewers/listeners.

Hi, you don’t outgrow true ADHD, or get “cured” of it. ADHD is a neurological difference. Either you had a different type of challenge that affected you, or you learned how to manage it in ways that have worked for you. So far. That goes for everyone. There are lots of other factors that can cause a person to feel challenged in ways they identify as struggling to stay focused - or hyperfocusing - being forgetful, being disorganized, etc. These factors include lack of sleep, depression, anxiety, blood sugar issues, traumatic events or relationships (which can later develop into PTSD), and more. Whatever it was, glad you’ve been able to get past it.

I really appreciated your point at the end about over-medicating and trying to be more in tune with your body. I believe there really was a concerted and specific effort by Pharmaceutical companies many many years ago to discredit any kind of natural healing, natural medicines, and all in the name of profits, not because it was better for people. In some cases modern medicine is wonderful, of course.. but we made it thousands of years without it - I'd like to see a movement returning people to natural healing again.

The point of any medication or supplement - is to assist the body and mind in its own ability to heal, not supersede it. And, while the origins of many practices seen today are ancient, research is still being done.

"Mad In America" is a great book for documenting this precise function of Pharmaceutical policies, lobbying and indoctrination into the medical field as the exclusive legitimate component of mental health. I truly believe psych-drugs will not be safe until it I genetically specifically formulated. Until then there will be perpetual side effects buried, minimized and diminished in publications of never/ extremely rarely, truly independent medication studies.

Mayim, I had a slight documentary/true crime podcast problem. I am also a 911 operator. I began to notice that my anxiety level was rising and, as a single mom, I hehecopter parenting in the extreme. I made myself give up the docs/pods for a year. It made a massive difference. Thanks for covering it.

It is hard for me regarding no phone while eating and stuff. My work, my everything, is pretty solitary. Sometimes music, reading, etc on my phone helps with the quiet and to feel less alone? Also, my work is physical. I am moving all the time, albeit not in ways that stimulate the heart rate. Rather, in ways that perhaps raise my cortisol. And keep it raised, because it is pretty constant movement for extended periods of time. Often in weather - heat and/or cold.

My recap here of this “de-constructing JC & MB” very funny but very educative episode. [With comments🙏🏼] “Breaking down” Mayim (by JC): 1.- Sleeping hygiene: a thing we architects miserably fail… 2.- Morning light: If only all we could live nearer nature.. 3.- Nutrition: The food hygiene and healthy way of eating that JC explains let me loose 12 kg. 4.- Movement: That’s it! We’ve still hunter nomad Neanderthals DNA inside..so..shake it, babe! 5.- Digital limitations: That! It looks so easy..but.. And “vice versa” (Mayim “breaking down” JC): 1.- Water: we’re 80% water, so.. 2.- No scary movies: I couldn’t agree more, Jonathan! 3.- If things get too deep, make a joke: my husband’s way..and we celebrated two days ago 36 years together.. 4.- Eliminate people that bothers you: That’s me! 5.- Sensory Sensitivity: of course! (Do you know the Pee Princess tale? That’s me!) 6.- Gadgets: The big temptation for tech people as JC and me! But we self-taught us better, right Jonathan? 7.- Food sensitivity: Dr. B & JC together, a must! 8.- Listening/knowing your body before any pill: my GP “Western” doc taught me to do that after my cancer. Unusual. 9.- Find someone that makes you laugh: Best counsel ever! 10.- Make room for your emotions: I think this is shared by Mayim too. And by all us “Breakers”! Fabulous episode! Thank you Mayim & Jonathan! 😍

It was interesting to learn new details, but also realize how much I have learned from different sources, but similar facts coming through I experienced for myself. So I agree, all these are proven to help, and something that is accessible to everyone. Like spring water, my parents collect from a natural spring water source, they drive to a location near a hiking trail, my parents only use the filter you have in the jug for Brita, and my sister added this stones for natural minerals, just need to boil it, the stones, once in a while to purify and reuse. I do get that almost feels like I will throw up but my heart feels minor heart burn, that is not to the point of taking a tums. Occasionally. Usually when I eat too much, too fast. Or certain foods. In my situation though, it’s not work related, it happens when I am hungry because I am upset and I am self medicating with food. When I am working, I do chew faster. I can’t stand the feeling of un-chewed food in my throat, and I did learn about the belly needing food properly chewed and took it seriously since young, highly sensitive person, here. So lunch time at work is not a problem. I did within this past, almost a year, do a six month Personal Trainer, once a week with homework, and lost 10Kg. Doing classes, now, did a few PT, less often, once I finish my contact, will only do classes. Till my transition time to new jobs, and continued job search leads to stabilized income. Will reset health & fitness goal to my BMI weight, between normal and overweight. Classes mainly and PT as needed after. I will always need help. Hate sweating. Need accountability. Thanks to my PT did balance into eating healthier, good nutritional and portion size habits. A lot of nutritional info I got from free or not that expensive workshops a friend needed, too, invited me to. Eventually, hope to move out on my own. With my kitty duo, my emotional support. Eventually will only foster. Want mostly to do cat related jobs I can handle. Maybe I might end up living with my two single bros. If my financial situation doesn’t allow for on my own. After my parents pass on later on. However things turn out. Sleeping is harder for me. I haven’t been able to sleep 8 hours straight since my insomnia started getting worst. I first experienced it at 11 years old, but was not as bad as it got as I got older. Now I can only sleep up to six hours straight. I have times I have naps. Or can’t nap. We’re South Korean by blood, but me and my younger siblings were born in Argentina, but we’re all Canadian citizens now. So multicultural, by different degrees and sometimes confusing, since we use all vocabulary from the three and mix it when communicating. A very interesting multicultural mix. Of course, parents mainly Korean, less English, us kids English, less Korean, and mainly we speak Spanish to our parents. Spotty communication. I have Cyclothymia, which I consider more of an emotional disorder, than a mental illness. Because I do use my mind to manage my emotions. I naturally and then via therapy, always used my mind to help my emotions. I don’t know how to do the let the emotions be and process the way Jonathan and others have spoken on it. But I have times that it did happen. But I don’t know how they happened. Well I think mainly thanks to God’s Agape and Grace. Most often, it’s works to really process my emotions in a healthy manner. Since psychologically my whole being has bad habits of repressing consciously or suppressing unconsciously. All negative emotions. Wanting to be good. As a christian. Raised as one but became confirmed by my own free will and reconfirmed many times, in my faith. So trying to be positive and good meant certain emotions are not welcome. Besides certain emotional dysfunctions relationally from my dad’s side mainly and some from my mom’s side. Different degrees, good days and bad days and overall most issues seem to run more on my dad’s side, but my mom’s so is not perfect either. Interestingly, my mom is more truly christian, but my dad isn’t as he doesn’t go to church for Christ and the Bible. But for my mom and he was raised. So only socially, but he is antisocial and argues with people there so, it’s a weird codependant relationship he has. But he is a pretty decent man, even with his issues. And did a lot and does some volunteering at church. My mom used to cook a lot for the church. Not as much as they used to as they’re getting older as seniors. Mostly they keep going for the choir. 💖✝️📖🕊💖

As I was listening to this episode I was out 7:30am walking on the beach watching the sun continue to rise while walking my dog. I thought how true it us about getting outside first thing in the morning (even when it's already over 80 here on the mississippi gulf coast) and absorbing the sun's rays and seeing nature, birds, crabs, my dog, the waves on the beach, etc. I am also trying really hard to turn off the lights as the night goes on to tell my mind it's time to slow down, doesn't always work, but I'm trying! Thank you for this (unintentional) reminder that I’ve naturally followed these principles for much of my life. Yet, I’ve spent much of my adulthood trying to ignore my body and Intuitive knowing, and then suffering negative consequences (and lectures from my health practitioners) … and trying to find that wisdom in myself again. By the way, kudos to Jonathan about the scary stories before bed … in ki aikido, we say the materials of the conscious mind are formed by the subconscious mind. Meaning…what we consume will rise to surface in one form or another. I have studied human development and psychology, energy healing, herbalism, biology, and other things … and yes, I have those food, chemical and energy sensitivities you mentioned, too. Thx for mentioning those, too.

Regarding food, I have been dealing with IBS, it took me years and sometimes weeks of pain to be able to find a doctor in my country (Argentina) that works with the LOW FODMAP diet, to leave all the meds I was taking trying to stop the pain, as Jonathan said, the gluten free sometimes is not healthy enough for me, and I have taken to read all the lables, and most of the processed food has so many things that are not good for us

The IBS thing - Gabor Mate had interesting things to say about it in terms of people with IBS having very different brain patterns in response to pain, mostly due to 'some kind' of early emotional trauma. On a personal note, I've always hated onions and only recently learned that raw onions are a serious trigger for my IBS.

I dare say that by sitting here watching rather than running around attempting to multitask, that I am not as distracted. My Spidey senses are telling me that “There must be more to it though” Anyway I love, love, love you both and this incredible podcast and found this episode’s unique format so gratifying and refreshing. By the way, Dr. Bialik you are a fabulous Jeopardy host. Alex Trebek would be gratifiedi to know that his “baby” is in such capable hands. I’m sending hugs and healing thoughts ,your way for your continued recovery. 🤗🤗

Yep! Timers work…IF and WHEN I don’t ignore them! (Oh, I’m almost done! Five more minutes…hits timer 5 times before giving up and looking up hours later…This affected my blood sugar in grad school, led to burnout twice in the last year….) So, discipline is helpful too!

I am thoroughly enjoying the list, the banter between Jonathan and Mayim, and though having heard many of these topics discussed independently, it brings more cohesion to the concept of Mental Health being Holistic Health, the Whole self, body, mind emotions and essence or soul/spirit. The conveyance of Mindfulness when eating is such an abstract idea warped by defiance to errant abuse of traditions, it can be difficult to prioritize and assimilate methods of slowing down and setting the correct mindset and intent/intention before consuming. This attitude is pervasi e throughout world culture when it comes to external consumption of energy (electricity, fuel, raw resources) by humans, it is easier to dismiss, minimize or negate the need for this transition in perception prior to engaging the activity to consume. Like breathing, we may take it for granted until we cannot. The mechanisms and behaviors indoctrinated and encultured are entrenched in this mindset of just doing, as my right and will desires. It is my choice to depriotize my basic needs as I see fit and as I will, because current culture allows me to do so, and be ok, until I'm not. This serves industrialized scheduling and rule of external prioritizing, requisite of being successfully industrious. The more I can do, the more I can achieve, the more success I will have and Will Be. It is an establishment based reprogramming of individual autonomy and self value, to an external value that benefits others, and still some of self. The easier it is for some to assimilate to this social structure the more success will be probable to them. It seems more like a form of mental serfdom, now that I write it out. So having mindful intent on what we do, why, and how particularly in relation to biological maintenance, may seem counter intuitive to the industrious productivity conditioning, but in reality has longer and shorter term gains and benefits that external success cannot buy and may be contributing to decline in personal value and biological success. I guess that long winded way of saying that getting into Beta/Theta brain waves, check in, mind, body, heart, and pilot our settings, before eating, sleeping, doing, seems would create more biological harmony for greater sustainable success for the whole self and short term improvements in overall performance, more than checking the latest emails, or societal distraction. Eat well, sleep well, sun well, breathe well, move well ..... seems so hidden in plain sight, yet the "well" part seems to be so elusive. I've talked to a lot of friends lately about the amygdala, stress, amygdala hijacking, and reseting the sympathetic nervous system. On the go, this can be a skill group learned and tailored, individually specific. But helps a ton for people to understand and get the process, identify, then to be able to observe in order to overcome it. Managing stress on the go, isn't just mind over matter, it's Mind over Mind. Thank you for your sharp and fun, thought provoking, discussion ❤️‍🔥

When Jonathan...a lot of people have digestive issues but don't chew their food. That's me. I'm always rushing or multi-tasking. My husband says I scarf my food too. But it's true! When I concentrate on chewing each bite 30 times, I mindfully eat as opposed to shoveling then feeling too full/bloating because I didn't allow my brain to register I ate a meal. I also have anxiety and depression so that effects my stomach as well. It's a hard habit to break.

I love the fact that despite the fact that Jonathan is right you tease Mayim relentless. I also enjoyed yours short term guest and the story of them thinking she was delusional about being Selina Gomez’s mom. Very funny. I have to confess that my sleep hygiene is one of my biggest problems. I think I’m around your moms age and I think my bad sleeping habits started in high school. Today I deal with depression and anxiety. I also tested for having the worst sleep apnea my pulmonologist office has ever seen. I for one reason or an other have been talking meds since I was about 4 or 5 . I do take drugs for the systems I told you about. I thought do much better with it if I get the quality sleep I need

Hi Mayim! I am currently in the very first year of my undergraduate psychology degree. The road ahead is long before i can become a licensed professional but your podcast has created a new drive in me. I love the arts but i also love learning about the brain, and its functioning and I would love to help people that way, you have demonstrated that it is possible to do both and that i don't have to exclusively take one path of my passions and leave the others behind. Thank you! I had a question about the Ask Mayim Anthing section because I cant find it on your website - is it still up?
