It’s an Ask Mayim Anything episode! Mayim and Jonathan do a deep dive breakdown of listener-submitted questions surrounding how and when to discuss your own mental health struggles with our children, differences between feelings of anxiousness and a Generalized Anxiety Disorder diagnosis, and the science behind laughter. They define and suggest ways to remedy our “god-shaped holes,” explain the differences between fears and phobias, and consider ways to set and hold boundaries with our loved ones. We’re also joined by a very special guest, Bev Bialik, who discusses her experience with shopping around for a new therapist.

I LOVE these summer special episodes!! Also, thank you Bev for sharing, especially for answering what it's like to feel when to transition to a new therapist. And Mayim for sharing when you wanted to switch but then had a huge revelation and explaining that familiarity. I've been with the same therapist for 11 years now and we have done some great work especially with trauma, EMDR and tapping.

These “Summer Episodes” are SPECTACULAR! And this has even a true mini-Bevisode inside! L💜VE IT! How I agree with your therapist when she said “Don’t tell your kids you’re ok if you’re not”. If a human being has the awakened intuition and the free instinct inherited from our ancestors are kids (sadly we loose a big part while growing). So they knew perfectly when things don’t go smooth. So, I believe that at any age you must/can begin to explain them mental health issues if there’re some near their “little world”. Always adapted at their age and ability to process it without leaving traumas. On the other hand, labels & overdiagnosis..that sounds like me & my structured right brain in continuous fight with my creative free left one! And about laughter, yes! It’s my best medicine!

The issue of "How do you know when you need help?" came up in class one day. Aside from something that keeps you from living your life the way you want, that causes you upset or discomfort, one of my psych professors used to ask his clients "How are you getting through the day?" If it's a struggle for you, for any reason, you may need help.

I really enjoyed this episode. It could've been twice as long, I'm here for it. I'm so glad this podcast exists. My gosh, finding a therapist can be such an arduous task, so self defeating. Sometimes you just want to give up on the whole process. I'm 40yrs old and I've only had two therapists that I've liked and connected with. I think my current therapist is probably going to retire soon and I don't know what I'm going to do without her. I'm already dreading starting the whole process over again. It's so worth it once you find the right one.

Excellent episode, and I love a mini-Bevisode! Mayim’s advice to the woman who wrote about her situation with her mother was absolutely spot-on. I had to stop contacting my parents for a while. It was very tough, but necessary. I also very much liked the questions Mayim asked Bev about finding a new therapist. I found, through a series of therapists over the years, that being ethnically Jewish (mostly), even though raised outside of the religion, it’s much easier for me to work with a Jewish therapist. There’s an ease of language and cultural touchpoints I don’t have to explain, and a style of talking that makes it much easier. A sort of shorthand that puts me at ease. Even though I didn’t go looking for a Jewish therapist, once I worked with one, it’s definitely become a preference.

Mayim, I swear. That one phrase coming from a trusted medical provider would have changed my entire post-partum experience with my first kid. 13:18 "You need to be vigilant to keep that baby alive" [validating that it makes sense your anxious] is a very different message than "relax, it's just your hormones leveling out you'll feel less crazy eventually " Like, you mean, it's LOGICAL that I feel this anxious when my baby isn't in my arms and it doesn't mean I'll be a mega failure as a mom and should unalive myself now before my baby is irreparably harmed by my being a dr described "helicopter mom" at 2 months old?!" 😶🤯 Thank you for that little tiny phrase. You exploring post-partum and anxiety and just having a full conversation around that could be LIFE-CHANGING for anxious ND new mamas - and NT ones, too!!

Hello Mayim, my name is Amanda, I'm from Brazil and I discovered you in the big bang theory, and I'm in love and fascinated by you and your work. I have anxiety too, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a brain that never stops (I'm always creating conversations in my brain in different languages, and I dream the same way), and when I found that out, I started therapy and help with medication. I've always been fascinated by our brain, and how complex our body is, God is a perfect creator, and I love researching and studying more about it. And your videos are helping me a lot to improve my English, increase my mental health knowledge and learn more about myself and what my body is trying to tell me. thank you. just...thank YOU and Jonathan. You have helped me SO much. I had a really bad tbi with multiple skull and facial fractures a year ago very soon. I have been through the motions of the physiological healing as only anyone can, but by still being able to communicate(that half inch in the neck matters!)... it has been VERY hard getting the proper Therapies(both physical and mental) and went the first three to four months with ZERO medical intervention nor any therapies because of insurance (im poor, but that equals 'not smart' to MANY, not all as the lady states, healthcare professionals I have come across throughout the last year. It has been a wild ride to say the least. I knew that I am ND since I was younger and had to mask certain things.. .which lead me to becoming a very out of control but 'functionable' aka 'good enough' lol 'Adult' and to make things a lil spicy..also a Mother. Learning my son actually helped me learn ME. And it helped me notice toxic generational traits tha I myself was guilty of possessing--learned behavior, conditioning or NOT... still have always naturally felt hte need to take accountability for my wrongs, but by being the sponges kids are, I learned how to 'not' do that as the 'right' way to do things. So there has ALWAYS been internal conflict with me there. And it has been so HARD, but finally around 33 years of age-ten years ago- I began 'healing', which triggered a friggin obstacle course designed specifically to cater to any and every insecurity and vulnerability in me. FFW to nine years later-alllll the work down the drain. Excellent therapy and CBT REALLY helped me. I was finally becoming so proud of my work and results...and then my life literally flipped upside down. So, going through 'CBT' with a terrible..and i do mean it.. therapist due to being 'poor'/state insurance although i worked 26 years straight until this happened.. am very educated but not decorated, none of it mattered. Still.. a YEAR later out of dozens and dozens of specialists... we are finally 'getting to the beginning' of getting to the bottom of things. There were so many other conditions blamed on 'tbi' and way too many people who weren't hearing me when I would explain my sensory processing disorders existed BEFORE the CVA.... DIGRESSING... I just wanted to thank you both, My speech therapist recommended this podcast a few weeks ago and YOU GUYS have helped me so much more than ANYONE else in the past year. Thank you a million times over. It feels good to be able to 'breathe' when I hear some of these things. You too are the greatest.

Trauma, PTSD, three lawyers, loss of family, Alzheimer's, Demetria, loss of leg, Staph/mersa... like, ALL the bad things, MAJOR life changes all in a few months in 2019. I was also home in a rural area just as COVID lock downs hit. Three years later I am stable and life is stable but no clue how to fix myself. I will try to write things and submit to your website, I guess. I am broken, in every way. I know I need therapy but all of them want me to take meds before they speak to me. I want more medications as I am already on five. Bad experiences with 2 different meds. Please keep up the great work and helping us all. I do miss TBBT Amy, but these help fill that hole as well. Hi Mayim, I love you to bits✨ How do I tell my parents that I am tired of being in the center of them every time they fight? I feel really suffocated and too down but I feel like I don't have the right to feel so because I am the eldest. I never felt being their child. I have always felt like I am a third wheel in their weird and hateful relationship. Aside from that, my mom got too tired of my father's shit too that she left for abroad (but also for our finances) and left me as my siblings' 2nd mother. I was 16 at that time and I thought that I would just cook for these motherfuckers, dress them and wash their clothes. I didn't know that I will also handle them when they feel these emotions of missing my mom, getting upset and getting into fights with their peers and deal with them as they become teens when I am a teen myself. I feel drowned. I still am even if I just turned 20. I am too tired but they make me feel like I am not allowed to because I need to deal with them first. 🙃

The closest you’ll come to that is in the series Young Sheldon. There are small bits in the voiceovers done by Jim Parsons as adult, post-TBBT Sheldon, which have occasionally featured Mayim as Amy, commenting about the situations in the episodes. For example, grown Sheldon referred to his and Amy’s children - one of whom is a son, Leonard Cooper - so we know that happened. In fact, in an episode in which young Sheldon and his father visit CalTech they just miss running into child-Amy, and young Sheldon has a good feeling about the place. I believe that such voiceovers are as much as we’re going to get. (I seem to recall that Simon Helberg has also done a voiceover on the show, too.) I doubt Kaley Cuoco would check in anytime soon, with her movie and streaming TV career going so well. But with the Chuck Lorre team helming Young Sheldon, we can at least know that they’ll respect what’s already been laid down about the narrative arcs of the characters.

I drink, eat something (?) sleep with help of meds, work from home - so yes, because I don’t have to do all the other shit; just dial into audio only meetings, don’t care about friends, nor socializing, etc. Coo,cool, I’m good. I want my in person therapists back! I don’t want to start a random relationship with an online therapist since 1) I have zero patience for explaining all the shit, and 2) The rabbit holes will drown us both, and 3) ITS SO MUCH BIGGER! I need someone in person and I’m sick to fucking death with this pandemic shit! (I RECOGNIZE I AM BEING AN ASSHOLE. I’M FULLY VAXXED AND BOOSTED.) I don’t care enough to start with some rando who will have no context for the situation I’m in. And I love and 💯 relate to several of the podcasters I’m listening to, but it feels like my scenario doesn’t quite fit anywhere. And the last fucking thing I want to hear is “ find a therapist.” YA THINK?! I repeatedly write emails but end up not sending them because it feels like my situation is to complex to answer during an episode. I’m so frustrated!

Loads of good advice, especially about the finding your right fit therapist/counselor/psychologist/psychiatrist. Depending on your needs for help. And definitely, you get to choose and they get to choose, always respecting free will choice of oneself and others. Remembering healthy boundaries, respecting yours and others. For me personally, the God shaped hole is very much part of my Christ centred, biblically sound and in context perspective/worldview. And I learned that only a christian counselor works for me. I don’t like psychologist/psychiatrist type of help. Therapist was okay. But budget wise counselor. Plus, I am not going to get better fast. We need to take it slow. Slower than a turtle or a snail. Patience is very important, because of my hyper times of my Cyclothymia, mild emotional disorder, supposedly a mild version of Bipolar. But I never fully liked that connection, because I want surpassing Peacemaking, not extreme emotional reactions to rule me. I use my mind, but hate when people act like emotion intelligence doesn’t exist. And act like the mind is the only cure and the emotions are to blame. I prefer the one in mind and heart, balanced, and for me Christ centred. Helping each other. The mind without the heart goes numb, cold and hard. Jaded cynisme rules. Remembering the whole, mind, heart, spirit/soul and body need to be one. It’s about healing and health. For me it’s about what freedom in Christ means biblically. Not human interpretation skewing it. Holy Spirit led to healthy healing, Gracious Truth in Agape Love. 💖✝️📖🕊💖
