I hang my clothes out from May to early October. I use hangers too. On a breeze day they come out looking wrinkled free. And you can’t beat the smell from hanging your clothes outside and your sheets, crawling in bed at night with that wonderful fresh smell !!

Thanks Anja! Do you get a sense that people in California think it's an eyesore or really old fashioned to hang clothes on the line? I think there's some home associations that forbid outside clotheslines. I love my towels rough too. So invigorating! 😄 I use only cold water for washing but then it's harder for powdered detergent/soap to dissolve so then I buy the cheapest liquid detergent in the grocery store and use 2 Tbsp for a load. I never seem to have a problem getting things clean. I think hanging clothes on the line is a wonderful privilege. If I have the place and time to stand outside and enjoy the weather and the birdsong while taking care of my family, then I'm doing alright in life. 🥰

I use your recipe, but always use bars I’ve already used in soap dishes. It works great, and it’s a great way to use up leftover soap. I let them dry out before grating of course…

Thanks, for sharing. Interesting that you have a outside laundry. We live in WI. (it can get -25' ;( on a 200 acre farm. Personally, I mostly only like sheets/blankets/coats on the clothesline... Enjoy your summer :)

We lived in Miami, FL and had an outside washer too. Unfortunately I now live in the cold Midwest so no more outside washer. I have a portable washer now and it works perfectly. Love this channel. My grandparents were from Germany but did not ever speak of it. They wanted to assimilate completely as Americans. I wish they had shared their culture with their children and us grandchildren.
@KitchenFairy616 ай бұрын
@@desertcandle1You grandparents probably didn't want to subject themselves to the intense hatred of Germans after the two world wars that Germany started. Americans hated Germans after that, so for your family it was safer to assimilate than stick out. I was lucky enough to get to spend many of years of my childhood growing us in various areas in n Germany so I experienced culture shock when we moved back to the states. My boyfriend's father had an intense reaction to me being German because as a child, he'd suffered from Germany invading Poland. At that point it had been only 30 years since the end of WW2. I'm sure you have many German foods and recipes that your grandmother made, especially for advent and Christmas.

@@KitchenFairy61 you are probably right. I forget that the hatred was bad. My dad fought against the Germans in WW2 and thankfully came home. I appreciate your channel very much.

I tried to make my own laundry detergent many years ago. Unfortunately Borax makes me itch really bad. Do you have any recipe without it?
@OurGabledHome6 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that! I don't have one without it but I'll look into that😊 ~ Anja

Using soap is okay, but over time it turned your clothes dingy and you need a laundry detergent to get your clothes truly clean. There's a great video about the differences. I have a clothesline that I use in the summer and fall. Too much spring pollen makes us miserable. I have solar panels on my roof to help offset the price of electricity. Here in Connecticut we have the highest price for electricity in the country. We got sold a bill of goods by the head of Enron in the late 90's who convinced our state legislators that we should deregulate our electricity supply because it would "save" us money. Well it didn't and we're stuck with it. It's a failed experiment and we're stuck with the results.

I use hand sanitizer on oil stains, it works great. My silly husband got some transmission oil all over his jeans and tee shirt. It took a lot of washes and hand sanitizer to get the oil out of his clothes.

I live on a farm and we get dirty...I use the quick cycle on my washing machine and it really saves energy and I can get all the laundry done in one day. It cuts the wash time in half and the clothes still get clean. I also use a clothesline to dry my clothes.

In Australia, most people hang their washing outside, although, as the city apartments take over existing house blocks, those people use dryers, as a lot of corporate body rules abound about not hanging washing on their patios, even if the unit/apartment belongs to the resident! Out in the suburbs and country though, we hang our washing in the glorious sunshine as much as we can.

This is how people still live in most Europeans countries! No dryers ever for monetary but also environmental reasons. When it rains we dry the clothes inside, in the basement if you have one or in an ikea wire rack for clothes, in the summer outside. Even apartment buildings have the drying clothing set up. Looks very third world country but it is definitely still a thing!

You don’t need two water softeners. Looks like you copied some clueless mommy blogger’s recipe.
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt6 ай бұрын
Clueless. Borax are baking soda are not substitutes. Borax is a stronger base (well over 100 times) and is used as an old fashioned water softener. Baking soda is just partially neutralized washing soda.

Just use mainstream detergents unless you have a chemical lab. What you’re promoting here is wishful thinking about old-fashioned ideas of using soap.
