*Summary of Hacks* 1. Add antioxidants (eg. Vitamin C, niacinamide, ferulic acid, resveratrol, Vitamin E) to your sunscreen to protect against free radical damage from the environment, which is amplified in the summer. 2. Tinted sunscreen blends better, and the zinc oxide helps protect against dark spots. 3. Use mineral powder brushes to get sunscreen into tough spots and for reapplication. 4. Wear UPF-rated clothing as a cheap yet extremely effective way to cover your whole body without the need for worrying about reapplication. Bear with the designs 5. Switch to a lightweight gel-type moisturizer (especially a nice moisturizing sunscreen!) during the summer because your skin and the environment around you is changing. Also, don't sleep with sunscreen on. BONUS: Polypodium leucotomos supplements, backed by 50-100 studies, contain antioxidants that can help elevate your sunscreen and protect against photodamage. (Disclaimer: Talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, and this information has not been evaluated by the FDA.)

The ISDIN tinted mineral sunscreen looks absolutely amazing! But $70 for 3.4oz!? Even though the ingredients look amazing, I don't think I could justify paying $20.5/oz for a product you're expected to reapply throughout the day and will need to be replaced every couple months!

I love the Isdn sunscreen. There is a study in PubMed about the effectiveness of repair enzymes in sunscreens. Interestingly most are available in Europe. But there are some U. S. brands with DNA repair enzymes too, including Photozyme and Neova. I believe repair enzymes are the future of sunscreen and skincare and not a lot of dermatologists are talking about it yet which surprises me.

My personal favorite tip for sunscreen in summer: Set yourself a timer on your phone. As skincare nerds, we probably all know that sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours if you are exposed to the sun. I work outdoors, so this is crucial for me to protect my skin from the sun, especially as someone who has sun-damaged skin. (I wasn't always a skintelectual and I got second degree burns on my upper chest and shoulders from sun exposure. Now these spots get rashes when they're not protected from the sun.)

Can you do a separate video on UPF clothing brands that you like/recommend? In addition, can you review sunscreens that are found at the drugstore that is more economical/in a larger container to use all over the body during the summer? For example, if someone or a family goes swimming everyday during the summer, which products should they look into? It can be quite costly to use higher end sunscreens all over the body when most of the containers are under 3 ounces.

The brand Supergoop also has a spray in powder sunscreen for the scalp! Acts almost like a dry shampoo and the stpray nozzel makes it easier to apply to the scalp! They also have an SPF 50 setting spray. So you can renew your SPF with a mineral brush and the setting spray to make sure you're getting a good layer during reapplication.

Thank you for mentioning it’s important to still get out and enjoy life, even in the sun. I’m high risk for melanoma as I’ve been having precancerous moles and spots removed since my early twenties. I have to see my derm every 6months because of it. It’s very overwhelming for me and has made me stay inside avoiding the sun altogether as much as possible. It’s taken quite a toll on me and can be depressing.

@@michellekelly2937 I love Paula’s Choice tinted sunscreen! (Super-Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30) It’s light, doesn’t turn orange on me, isn’t shiny or gooey feeling - in fact, it’s for oily-combo skin so if you’re dry it might not work. But it’s a fair price IMO and they’ve got great products in general, plus really good customer svc on chat and by phone in my experience, rare these days.

@@leapintothewild Thank-you, Marijka! I appreciate the suggestion. I have tried that one but it's too drying for my skin. However, I do LOVE the Paula's Choice Hydralight SPF 30. I've been using it for years. I agree with you about Paula's Choice. I do love a lot of their products, and they do have great customer service, however, I'm not so happy with them discontinuing my favourite cleanser (formerly Moisture Boost - changed to Calm for Normal to Dry). I've been using that cleanser for 25 years!! I don't like the new replacement. It's so frustrating when a company discontinues a product you love. So, now I'm on the hunt for a new cleanser, and I know I won't find one as good as that one. : (

@@michellekelly2937 I'm with you on the discontinuing without notice thing! Just this morning I tried the grapefruit clarifying shampoo from Neutrogena for the first time, which replaced the original yellow clarifying shampoo I'd used for DECADES. Wow, it stinks like sour BO! Nasty stuff, and it feels like it really stripped my hair. I only use a clarifyer 1-2 x a month, but I would've bought several bottles of the original if I had known! aaarrrrggggh Back to the $$$ Biolage one, I guess.

Just a heads up for everyone watching: While Dr. Shah and Dr. Maxfield have the best intentions and have changed many of our lives (mine included), they're still bound to make content that's sponsored by skin companies paying them to showcase their products. They may be under contract or some sort of "agreement" to only speak in a certain way about those products in their videos so please, remember to read between the lines of what they're saying and focus on the ADVICE they're giving, not just the products they suggest. If you look at many other Dermatologist channels, they're also paid off/sponsored by other skincare companies so it's important to actually do some proper research before you buy the products they offer you. If they suggest a product that's NOT part of the company they're sponsored by, then chances are, those products are ACTUALLY good. Just look at the description of every skincare video to see for yourself.

@@wilmaknickersfit My comment was never meant to be hostile. You'd be surprised at how easily people can be swayed to buy products. Marketing and advertising is an incredibly powerful tool and while you may be able to see past the ads, a lot of people can't. I know ISDIN is a reputable company but again, it's never a bad thing to remind their audience how sponsored videos work and that it's important to do your own research as well, especially since there are so many good products out there that aren't just from ISDIN.

I've thought about trying that Isdin as it's been recommended by others that don't particularly enjoy mineral sunscreen, claiming that this is the nicest most cosmetically elegant mineral option out there but I get my DNA repair enzymes separately which is what that plankton ingredient is. Photozyme is the brand I use for DNA repair. It's about $100 a bottle but it lasts for a very long time. You only need one metered dose and it lasts for months. Just another option for people out there who are interested in incorporating DNA repair enzymes into their routine. I do use it in the morning along with my antioxidants prior to sunscreen application

I notice you kind of mention kids and sunscreen when you’re addressing the skin protection needs of a wider swath of people, but I don’t see any video that has consolidated info related to adolescent skin health on your channel. It would be helpful if you could include products for families on a budget. The product “hacks” in this video are well outside of what a family will typically be able to spend on skin care. When my husband and I went to mexico, what I did was I bought a larger bottle of sunscreen and a bunch of empty 100ml bottles and put the sunscreen in the smaller bottles. I agree with you though, it's hard to find good sunscreen that comes in smaller sizes.

I love Aussie sunscreen, from Ultraceuticals and Ultra Violet, especially the Ultra Violt Queen Screen. It looks like a serum bottle, very fluid and mattifying. Anyway, I'm enjoying trying different form of sunscreen. I'm looking forward to summer in Australia now, as I can purchase my favorite sunscreens and no need to worry I don't need them that much. It's winter in Australia now, so I only have Ultraceuticals spf 30 mattifying.

The Hada Labo premium whitening lotion (light) has all the things… vit c, arbutin, niacinamide, HA, resveratrol. I use it as a moisturizer before putting on my sunscreen during the summertime here in Thailand where it’s boiling hot and humid 😅 I don’t notice any difference on my PIE yet tho because it hasn’t even been a month yet but I think it’s a great product for anyone looking for a super lightweight toner/moisturizer with all the good stuff recommended in this video. It’s pretty affordable and it’s fragrance-free!

In terms of protective clothing, I've used Solumbra shirts for years! They have a wide variety of clothing. No, I'm not employed by the company, don't know anyone who is. Just a very satisfied customer. They deliver to Canada, by the way.

I doctors, I personally love the Australian gold tinted SPF 50 mineral sunscreen. It actually provides a little bit of coverage and I use it all summer long in place of foundation unless I’m going out somewhere nice. What are your thoughts on that particular sunscreen is it a good one?Thank you

Thanks to Dr. Shah's pronunciation, now I'm mentally singing "Err-EE-Photon-a" to the tune of The Toreador Song from Carmen. Fitting for an ISDIN product!

"Polypodium leucotomos" is so much fun to say; I have never heard of it but I need it! Thank you so much for yet another informative video!!! I am 57 and vacationed in Florida twice a year, and was on a swim team, growing up. I never used sunscreen because I thought I didn't need it. Boy was I wrong! I had five "precancerous" (whatever that means) spots removed from my temple, the top of my head, chest and shoulders by the time I was twenty-six. I have a small bald spot on the top of my head from the surgery and my hair wants to part there. I also developed horrible melasma. I now avoid being directly in the sun, when possible, and wear sunscreen every single day, rain or shine, even if I don't plan to go outside. Sorry, but if it gets "even one person to wear sunscreen" it's worth repeating. 😁

You don't need to reapply vitamin C when you reapply your sunscreen, once in the morning is sufficient. You also don't want to subject the bottles to heat and direct sunlight at the beach.

@@per_siri Couldn't agree more! Vitamin C has enough trouble penetrating the skin. Absolutely no chance of penetrating over a thick layer layer of sunscreen!

Amazon Carrie’s lotion applicators to use on your back! One looks like a paint roller, the one I use is a long clothe with handles on the end. It solves the problem of trying to put lotion on by yourself. It works great for applying sunscreen to the shoulders and back. It’s a game changer!

Another great video - thank you! y'all rock! Question: do we really need special clothing for sun protection? I read that it shouldn't be sheer, but can't a long-sleeved cotton shirt do the trick? Or something like this? Would love to hear more on this topic.

Yeah because you're covering more of the skin so you don't need to apply sunscreen on your arms. My dad works in long but thinner shirts always (his work involves being in the field for multiple hours)

Love Hada Labo Sunscreen. +++ Skinceuticals tinted sunscreen is also very nice However, I was disappointed with Skinceuticals AGE Skin Interuptor advanced. It pils (spelling) even with a thin layer. For 260.00 I should be disappointed.. I will just stick to the Triple Lipid Restore and the AGE Skin interuptor! Many thanks, Susan from Canada I have worn skin sunscreen since I was probably 12. I wear it winter summer spring and fall. In all honesty I still get guessed 20 years younger than I actually am. I think it’s key to keep your skin beautiful….and…eat right. And get enough sleep... that’s my motto for beautiful skin. Oh yes, I do use Skinceuticals CE Ferulic….nice product with a lot of clinical data. Lastly, I have a facial with every change of the season!!! Thanks guys! 😊
