Immigration have a point. You went in with expired naija passport. On leaving and presenting your US passport without a naija visa on it, they'll ask for your naija passport. Unfortunately, it's expired - which is not right. Please, they did the right thing. Next time, either make sure you have a naija visa on your US passport or ensure you will renew the expired Passport before leaving naija. Thank God they kindly allowed you to go. Lesson learnt!

There is no lesson here. The nigeria system said you can coming with your expire passport. That proves you are citizen of that country i:e Nigeria. But when you say that you set your self for abuse of the system. The British person appointed by the ticketing office will not denial you entry. Becaue you have the basic to enter the country. The only thing missing is just a stamp saying you left nigeria on a passport. The world is very digital all this can be track in several ways. There would not be issue of people using expire passport if the production can be done as quick as possible. Current timeline take 4 to 5 months for just production of just one passport. So you expect people to coming and plan such time. To deal with this service privates the passport office entirely.

You can not go back with expired passport without proof that you are processing it . You come into and out of Nigeria with Nigeria passport. Until you want to board the plane and when you land in uk is the only time you will use your British passport. This is how i have been travelling with my dual passport between uk and Nigeria. Uk to Nigeria.....Nigeria passport From Nigeria until you pass immigration.....Nigeria passport Land in uk /immigration....British passport.

Summer, I know our naija officials can be clueless and irritating. But on this issue they're right. This is an excerpt from the US state department travel advisory for their dual nationals traveling to naija, which i guess will also apply to British-Nigerians. "U.S.-Nigeria dual-national citizens are now required to have a valid Nigerian passport in order to depart the country. Dual-national citizens can be, and often are, denied boarding until they have obtained non-expired Nigerian passports"

I have a dual citizenship from Germany. First and foremost, i appreciate the immigration officers. They were calm, and they also took their time in talking and explaining to you. They were doing their job, but you claim to be a victim, whereas you were 100% wrong on how you approached the immigration officers. Madam, you are supposed to be humble in your manner of approach. This video is not needed. 4 years ago, my Nigeria passport expired, and i didn't have BVN/NIN number back then to renew my Nigeria passport. I had to use my German passport to travel to Nigeria but with a visa on it. I came in as a foreigner to Nigeria, and i left as a foreigner. Because of the expenses i used in securing a visa (300 euros) plus stress, i had to find ways to renew my Nigeria passport. Let us learn to do the right thing at the right time. Madam, your country of dual citizenship has no visa free partnership with the Nigeria government. With your level of education as a nurse, i would have expected you to be well informed on this. Firstly, in our Western world, it is definitely not possible to travel with an expired passport even if you're a citizen of the country going to another country (probably your second home country) outside Europe. Nigeria government has made things a little easier for citizens to return with their expired passport home but also to have the chance to renew their passport if possible in their home country. Anyone who says otherwise by using a foreign passport to travel out of her country without a stamp visa on it is either ignorant of the laws or has no knowledge. I rest my case.

Dual citizen with little knowledge of how passports work. I travel between UK-US-EU, I never enter and leave with the same passport. I enter the UK with a UK passport and leave with a different one, depending on where I’m going. It helps with less checks and delay. I have also always entered Nigeria with a Nigerian passport and left with a different passport, depending on where I’m going. These officers were trying to create a situation where they can extort. They only changed tactics because she confronted them and started recording. Nigerians are too sentimental and emotional, that why the country is where it is.

Well spoken. I agree my sister here did not know all of this and the whole news might come as a shock to her. But I must say I commend those immigration officers because they proved me wrong about most Nigerian immigration officers like the ones that stopped me when I visited Nigeria last asking me on arrival why I didn’t travel with my expired passport when I already have a new Nigerian passport…. Long story short our sister was allowed to travel, but the lesson must be learnt by anyone traveling as a dual citizen. Entry passport must be the same passport you exit Nigeria from, same to any country around the world. Nigerians note that Nigerian immigration is now mandating anyone applying for passport to present origin of state certificate. So don’t travel to Nigeria without NIN and certificate of origin, or make out time when you travel to get those before leaving Nigeria

@@bolatitoakinrolabu755most of the people here have no clue about the rules of dual nationality, I’ve tried to explain this to a lot of people particularly at SassyFunke channel where I first came across this video where she tried to criticise @SummerAku. People don’t realise Summer was well within her rights, she entered Nigerian as a citizen and it is within her rights to leave as a non-national without being harassed (the joys/advantage of dual citizenship). Over the years that I’ve visited Nigeria, most times I enter with my valid Nigerian passport and on few occasions while exiting, some overzealous and unscrupulous immigration officials have attempted t to extort money from me and threatened not to let me through. After standing my ground and immediately they realised I knew my rights, they always end up doing the walk of shame with their tail in between their legs. Later our people will cry Nigeria is bad when they shy away from their rights and refused to hold politicians and officials accountable.

Yes, you are allowed to come into the country with an expired passport, but you are expected to renew it before departing the country. Secondly, the passport with which you came into the country with, is the same one you leave with. They cannot stamp you in with one passport and stamp you out with another. That is not done. I beg to differ, I had the same experience too. There were not doing their job at all. One of the officers told me that they don't obey the law passed by Nigeria embassy outside the country. I explained to them that their manager/boss signed my passport at the point of entry to Nigeria and instructed me to show the page he signed when I am going out of the country. They didn't allow me to go, the immigration boss who was on duty that day said if we can give him dollar or pounds he will let me go. We rejected initially, but we later gave him money so that we won't miss our flight. He still didn't let us go not until another God fearing higher immigration officer intervene

I entered Nigeria with a visa on arrival because I couldn’t be stressed travelling to london from Scotland to renew or apply for a Nigerian passport. Upon coming back to the UK I entered with a British passport with Nigerian visa on it, I was asked why I was going back with a British passport, I explained that I had applied and it was not ready and the guy stamped my passport without delay. In my own opinion you need a Nigerian visa on the passport you are returning abroad with.

We know that some immigration officer are bad but please Nigerians should stop putting everything on social media. This is the case with any country. A country can't deny entry to citizens even on an expired passport. However, you can't leave the country with an expired passport. She should have gotten a brand new ticket and switched passports. If you have a return ticket then the same passport has to be used upon returning. She should have purchased a one way ticket to Nigeria. Then buy a one way ticket to America. Then she could have used both passports.

Hi Summer. Your videos on your vacation has been giving great insight on different scenarios and situations. I actually think that it was nice and gracious that they allowed you leave "at their own discretion" according to them. It appears that traveling into Nigeria with a Nigerian passport and choosing to leave with another passport could be seen as trying to cheat the system, because it could be assumed that you didn't want to procure a Nigerian visa, which your foreign passport requires when you were returning to Nigeria and hence you used your Nigerian passport, and then on exiting Nigeria, you also avoided paying for a new Nigerian passpport,, by using your foreign passport which doesn't contain any Visa into Nigeria on top of which your document of entry into the country (your Nigerian passport) was expired and you didn't renew it. So you actually met a bunch of very considerate immigration officers. Anyways, all is well that ends well! Nnọọ ije.

But countries that allow dual/multiple citizenship require you to use the same passport you used to enter the country when leaving the country. Meanwhile, on top of that, the Nigerian passport you entered with was expired, and you didn't renew it.

That's absolutely correct! We tend to complicate things for ourselves unnecessarily, due to self entitlement. You can't travel in or out of USA with expired passport. Nig recently approved arrival with expired passport with the clause that you're obligated to renew your expired passport upon arrival or start the process & show proof. Let's not abuse the system. You should have NIN by now as well as other necessary documents to expedite your Nig passport & can be ready in 2wks. I've done it myself & my friends several times. USA have an express passport as well with extra charge, currently regular can take more than a month. So it's your prerogative, not theirs, regardless of your traveling reason or duration of your stay, you're required to plan accordingly. Get a visa or get a valid passport or stay where you're. Every country have it's own system. The officers are professionals & not yelling. You're just being dramatic

Hello, I am considered as a foreigner to my country (Cameroon) because I have a European passport therefore, when going home, I need a visa. They must trace you In and Out as a Nigerian or a Foreigner. you can't come in with one passport and return with a different one. That's an International Law. The policeman was kind enough to let you go back with your foreign passport because you were considered at that time as an illegal foreigner who got into Nigeria without authorisation. Think how the police at the airport would treat someone in the same case in Europe... To avoid all that sis, next time just take a visa when going home on holiday. I love your videos!

In Nigeria it's perfectly fine just present both passports and you are good to go. But if you don't have the Nigerian passport then it's better to get a visa as you said. I know the situation in Cameroon, since they don't officially recognise dual citizens you can't really present both passports.

@Summer Aku Vlogs im a huge fan of your content, and you make alot of inspiring videos that make one crave having dual nationality. However, i think the officers here were right but they didn't pass the information properly. What they were trying to say was that yes they acknowledge the fact that you have dual nationality and have the right to live in both countries. However, when you come in as a nigerian, you use your Nigerian passport to come in, and that's were they'd stamp your entry. They'd also have to stamp your exit on the same passport that you entry was stamped in. In you case, the passport was expired at the point of entry(which is allowed). I don't know the rules surrounding expired passport for exit from nigeria or if the same rule applies as well. But they needed to stamp your exit on the same passport they stamped your entry on, and cant stamp your foreign passport becusee theres no nigeria visa on it, and they are not authorised to wothout a visa. I think we just need to check these rules to be certain next time tho. And im my opinion if you can and to be safe renew the nigerian passport aswell(especially ifnyou have plans to go to naija within the kext 10 years). But to be honest those immigration officers, especially the first one was polite for the most part. But i can understand your frustration aswell. Thank you for the great content as usual tho.

They are going to have to fix that bc I knew it would come to this. They have clarify the rules and can’t assume people would know…. They document when one is coming and going, so they can match the information. I know Nigeria is different though, they will tweak somethings to let one leave on a different passport, thank goodness. However, Me as an American citizen, I would not be able to come to US with my expired passport and then leave with a Nigerian passport. It doesn’t happen like that. I am sorry, I really don't understand your statement. As a dual citizen, when you are leaving the United States you either need an American passport with Nigerian visa or your Nigerian passport. American passport with no Nigerian Visa will not allow you to fly out of the states to Nigerian. Dual citizenship allows you to enter with the passport of the Country you are a citizen of. Both passport do not control each other.

As a dual citizen myself British then Nigerian, I can confirm they are right. it’s the right process and I have followed this process for years, as far back as my teenage years. The problem here is that you think you know all things and didn’t want to listen to what is obtainable in international circle. First, you came in with Nigeria passport that you didn’t tell anyone when it expired but your foreign passport was valid. Can you try to come to Nigeria and go back to your second country with expired passport and see if it be respected by the airline or the immigration. Second, if you really value Nigeria as a country, you would have made efforts to renew it in your country of residence. You forgot that without the Nigeria passport that is now nothing to you, was actually the basis why the the other passport was issued Third, I will advice you look up the definition of a visa. As a non-citizen, you need a visa to enter into another country( which can be denied at the point of entering anyway, so having a visa is not automatic entrance to the Said country), you need that same visa to go out, hence it must not expire before leaving such country, otherwise it becomes an offense known as immigration offense. Therefore, when you came to Nigeria as a Nigerian, you were expected to go back as same, your other passport will then serve as a your visa(that is authority that can allow you enter into the destination country). If you want immigration at the airport to treat you based on your second/foreign passport, then you must provide an evidence that you were treated/allowed into the country by that same passport. Forth, allowing anyone to come to Nigeria with expired passport is so that you can renew it here. It’s not that you can come in and go back with the same expired passport. You cannot come to Nigeria knowing that you cannot stay more than 2 weeks or a month and then start complaining that the process to renew the passport is cumbersome. It’s the same government that asked you to come in with expired passport is the one controlling the process of you renewing the passport Fifth, I believe you are aware of a visa that the government also in place for Nigerians who are dual citizens. If you cannot renew your passport over there and you know that you are not going to stay long in Nigeria to have enough time to renew your passport, why didn’t you take advantage of such visa. It is not enough to come online to tell people what is not correct because you have access to the internet. You are misleading people and show casing your ignorance in such field. You cannot go back to your country with another passport when you didn’t enter the country that is holding back with the same passport. The immigration officer was just doing his/her work. There are Nigerians with expired passport that come home to renew there passports and those with limited time come in with visa on their other passports. Please stop belittling Nigeria as a country. I have always detested immigration officers, however, in this case, the immigration officers were right. They were spot on. You are supposed to have a current passport before travelling out of any country, your passport should even have a certain length of validity in some instances. You may also travel with a travel certificate issued by an embassy or consular office. Imagine travelling out of Ireland with an expired Irish passport, I don't think that's tenable. That is why most Western governments give a warning when it nears the holiday season that people should renew their passports, they even advertise it on the radio/TV. In the case of Nigeria, to my understanding, they allow Nigerians to come in with expired passports to allow them to renew same. Most Nigerian embassies cannot deliver passports expeditiously to Nigerians in the diaspora. However, they are improving, It is happening quick in some embassies.

Hi Summer, I think the immigration officers were correct, but their explanation wasn't the best to say the least. Naija Govt recently made the rule to allow Naijas in diaspora to come back home with expired passport. But the Gov's intention is that such people will renew their Naija passport while in Naija before they return to their host country. Unfortunately, not many diaporians can afford to stay back in Naija for the long time it takes to get the passport renewed. In my opinion, allowing one to even come in with an expired Naija is a big relief to some extent. Before this rule, just like 4 years ago, it was a pain in the head for one to travel to Naija with an expired Naija passport. You will need to apply for emergency travel document at a Naija embassy in your host country before you can be admitted into Niaja with an expired Naija passport. I have used this emergency travel document before, and I can tell you the experience was not so great, it costs money and waste your time.

Summer, if you’re are traveling to Nigeria with an expired passport, you need to renew before going back to your base. It’s either you expedite it if you know someone at the passport office or better still you renew before traveling to Nigeria or get a visa on your Ireland passport. That’s the rule. My dear, I believe that you are inexperienced with regards to how dual citizenship works in immigration laws. I have maintained a dual Nigerian/US citizenship for almost 2 decades and you "Summer" were the one breaking the Nigerian immigration law in this case because whatever status you enter any country is how you depart. You entered as a Nigerian with expired passport and you must renew your passport before departing but you failed to renew it and rather used the intimidation tactics on them to enable you depart as a visitor without any visa. Why didn't you get a Nigerian Visa with your dual citizen passport or do a proper research on this issue. Why we Nigerians like to misuse every opportunity given to us, why we always take liberty for granted. Why is it so complicated to renew or make passports in Nigeria? Here in Cameroon, it takes just a day to make your passport because the system is very transparent and straight forward. It used to be 3 months and if you wanted express, 3 days. But now, you can make it today and collect tomorrow. Very straight forward

Nigeria needs to advertise that you can use your expired Nigerian passport to come home but you must renew your passport when you arrive in Nigeria. They need to expedite, speed up the passport renewal for Nigerians from abroad who come home with an expired passport! Thanks for sharing but you and everyone else should take note - it is not a new law that one can travel back to Nigeria with expired Nigerian passport; It is assumed that one will renew it on arrival in Nigeria otherwise obtain a visa on the foreign passport; dual citizenship is allowed but both passports should not be expired during the travel period; the only new law is the compulsory NIN prerequisite for applying for a Nigerian passport now and it can be processed abroad too like in the UK,there are centres every where if you google depends on your location. Girl I went to Nigeria from US with expired Nigerian passport my passport was taken from me. So I left and on my way back I now have to use my US passport. Now immigration said I can’t leave without my Nigerian passport I told them I got my Nin or so but the heat was so much I couldn’t stay. Though I stayed for 10 days. I had to tell immigration that I had surgery I have to leave because if anything happened to me they won’t be able to go back and I am not going to be their If I had known I would have allowed her let be pass to catch my flight or should I be sleeping on the floor? They let me pass kiyakiya. The point they are making is that you entering with expired passport it’s an opportunity given to you to renew your Nigerian passport. But you must get your Nin first you get your Nigerian passport within 4 weeks. I had to leave without doing the passport the heat was too much in March.

To the best of my knowledge if you are travelling to Nigeria with a foreign passport as a Nigerian,you have to obtain a visa from your country of residence. So I think you ought to have obtained a visa to enter Nigeria if you are using your British passport and not your Nigerian passport. And you cannot both at the same time, it's either you present your duly signed foreign passport with the visa or you use your Nigerian passport for the entire journey. This is my view as someone resident in Germany, we don't get the dual citizenship status as foreigners.

When you wrnt yo a country with passport G, you must exit with passpi G!. In some countries if you mix it up you will be detianed for investigation and you may miss your fight. You must understand the process. Some people have 4-5 passports: 1 for citizenship by investment, 1 for country of birth, 1 from citizenship based on daddy'd citizenship, etc. Use one passport for a complete round trip!!! Do not just show different passport whenever you feel like it. The Immigration officers are correct. It's the same a over the world. Know the procedures!

Hello Aku. Nigerian Immigration is right on this one. My family and i travelled to Naija after the Covid-19 era. Couple of points 1. You cannot leave a country without having a valid status while you were a resident of that country. Yes, the government allowed expired Nigerian passport upon entry however the onus is on you to regulate your status the moment you arrive. 2. No recordings are permitted once you enter border control. This is a no-no especially in USA/Europe. You may end up paying fines, delay your flight, plus have your camera confiscated. 3. You will need to get a NIN to do anything in Naija. Having a phone, bank account, etc. I myself got caught-out by how much much the laws have changed, but the onus is on you to familiarise your with the law. I am glad you had fun and enjoyed your stay. Safe journeys back to Europe

The govt says u come travel with expired Naija passport to Nigeria, but you are expected to start your renewal of the expired passport, not necessarily having it fully renewed,, I have US passport also, but at the port harcourt airport, I had to pay$160 bucks to the Nigerian embassy in Washington DC where I live to process my renewal when I get back, I showed them the receipt, then I was allowed to board, but I must admit the instructions is very confusing about that whole traveling with expired passport stuff, btw, u can only do that if u have a foreign passport, a US green card holder was denied boarding because her naija passport expired which she travelled with but she wasn’t allowed to fly back with the expired passport and she didn’t have any foreign passport either. So the whole thing is a mess with incorrect information from the government and lack of research by many people.

@@summeraku the same passport you came in with should be shown on your way out.if not they demand for your nationality to ensure you have a visa and you have not exceeded the number of days given to you on the visa ,if not you have to pay a fine.they may have been Wondering why the passport was not renewed.if you are trully nigerian.you look biracial.

I have a dual passport also. SUMMER is wrong to exit 9ja with expired passport. You should have gotten a Visa on you other foreign passport since you didn't renew your 9ja passport

I also have dual citizenship, you must use one passport to enter and leave, you cannot interchange them in between, if you decide to use your foreign passport you must get a visa even if you have dual citizenship, the officers were right.

Not true. If you enter Nigeria with a visa it means you can’t stay beyond the visa date… BUT a dual citizenship has the right to stay in their 2 countries as long as they like.. that’s actually part of the benefits of being a dual citizen

You could have requested for a visa on your foreign passport at the airport upon your arrival, if u know u will not renew your nigerian passport during your stay there. My only concern now is that the immigration may have seen this video, and its an offence to do video at that area of the airport. There is a likelihood that they have now flagged you, and you may have an issue the next time you step ur foot on Nigerian soil. You need help on that.
