Based purely on vibes, here’s what I think happened. A dragon did hatch at Summerhall. But it didn’t hatch correctly. Their maligned spells and methods birthed an imperfect creature which couldn’t hold in its fire, so burned them all to death. They witnessed the birth of a malformed dragon, a bastard god of fire, and for the “sin” of its creation they were punished.

That's actually one of the best and more original theories I have seen. Might make sense, too. Also, the thing is some of the eggs might have been from wild dragons which were unbound to targeryens, thus not blood bonded to the Targeryen line.

It's a pity. I always thought that the Targaryens were of dragon blood, and that all those stillborn children with wings and tails were part of it. I thought that Egg turned himself into a dragon mutant when he tried to summon dragons from eggs.

Rhaegar, Elia, Lyanna, and Ashara are all characters that haunt the narrative. Rhaegar's actual narrative purpose is to be a representative of the perfect king in a time where knights were knights and lords protected the small folk against invading forces. Despite only happening 14 years before the story of the books, that time period is remembered by the older characters are nearly mythical. This bygone era where knights had chivalry and tournies were things of slendor and peace. Rhaegar on paper is the perfect prince. Inhumanly beautiful but also a strong knight. Gallant and kind in a loving marriage. He was a studious kid who loved histories and poems. He played a silver harp so well that every girl he ever played for cried hearing him sing. He won the greatest tourney ever while wearing rubies in his armor. But that wasn't Rhaegar. Rhaegar was the depressed kid who escaped into his books. The deeply sad teen who forced himself to train thinking he would have to save the world some day. He was the concerned husband who saw his wife nearly die twice bringint thier kids into the world. He was the frustrated Prince who had to deal with his father who was losing his mind and hated him. He was beloved by literally everyone yet had no power to change anything. His birth coincided with the death of nearly his entire family. "His is the song of ice and fire," Rhaegar says to Elia after looking at Dany. Rhaegar represents everything in the series. Even if Rhaegar wasn't supposed to be a literal dragon, him being "the last dragon" means a lot. He was the last symbol of House Targaryen before Dany. It also means he was the last rotation of the wheel. The sins of House Targaryen are great and the sins of their ancestors is many times worse. There were good ones along with the bad and that was Rhaegar. The perfect prince that faced only tragedy. The man shackled by fate who ignited the powder keg that was the brewing rebellion against his house. Seemingly a flawless person who only ever saw his own flaws. Like his grandfather tho, maybe the dreams of dragons and the end of the world led to laspes of morals. If Rhaegar was the last Dragon, then Dany is the rebirth of the dragon. The dragons died truly with Rhaegar and the idealic tiime he represenets. Dany is the rebirth of dragons to face the reality of the world and its biggest threats.

Re:"What do you think happened at summerhall?" I think the Targs dragon dreams were very vague and they got the jist "king dying in a pyre, pregnant Targ princess + stone eggs = dragons AKA prince that was promised" but they have 2x bits of info they dont/couldnt know: 1. The eggs they have were spiked, likely at the behest of Aegon III, but definitely by the Maesters after the Dance and the reason Danys worked was she had the 3x eggs stolen before the dance. 2. Prince that was promised =/= Azor Ahai Because of this they tried to force the prophecy, by Aegon V willingly setting himself into the Pyre and trying by force to Pull the princess, which likely resulted in Duncan fighting to keep her out and the place lighting up. However the prophecies were right, Azor Ahai was born that night. Rhaegar created Light bringer (Jon) in his 3rd attempt who was tempered in the blood of Rhaegars love (Lyanna) who will fight back the darkness, and the Prince(ss) (Dany) that was promised was born of mad kings line and birthed dragons from stone eggs.
@Ashbrash19982 күн бұрын
I've been thinking the SAME exsct thing about Rhaegar weirdly fitting the Azor Ahai prophecy but not in the way people think. Because they take the sword story WAY too literal. Like you could even argue that Rhaegar also fit it with the first two swords AA made not being up to snuff was symbolized by his first two children not being the saviors he wanted them to be. Not saying that Elia or the babies weren't important, just not the right ones. Rhaegar is also the one character connecting at least Jon and Dany and probably whoever the third dragon is. Which I'd important because of all we know of AA, the main thing we get is the sword and saving the world. We hear nothing of the battles he fought or how he beat the darkness back. Which is strange considering how big he was and is. Which I think is intentionally, and goes with grrm's but about prophecies being unpredictable. Also, side theory to add to your, there is a theory that Egg dragon dreamed of a bald headed Dany post pyre and assumed it was him.

I think someone else also survived Summerhall, Jenny. She dances in halls, not a castle, and I doubt the long dead at Oldstones would really count as "her ghosts", those that died at Summerhall would though. I also think she continued to live there, which is why Rhaegar would often visit. I believe that the sad song that he would return from Summerhall with is Jenny's Song.

While I don't discount the idea that it was Rhaella and Rhaegar that Dunk saves at Summerhall, I believe it wasn't just one or two people who were saved, but several, one of whom was Jenny of Oldstones' woods witch friend, the Ghost of High Heart (Jenny died, her friend survived), and another was one of Brienne of Tarth's parents, most likely her mother as GRRM doesn't even give us a name, yet he names her infant twin sisters who both died in the cradle not even two months after their birth. I believe Brienne's Targaryen connections go back to Summerhall, most likely with her mother being the daughter or granddaughter of Prince Duncan Targaryen and Lady Jenny. As her parents were married she was trueborn, and as her father and mother (or grandfather and grandmother) were invited to the celebration at Summerhall, she was there as well and Dunk got her out along with several others. This would also track if she brought Ser Duncan's shield to Evenfall Hall when she married why Brienne didn't know who it had belonged to. We know Brienne knows very little of her mother so why would she know the shield of the knight that saved her from Summerhall?

Another great video for thought! While I like each of the elements and ideas you discussed, the one thing I missed was a one-sentence thesis statement of exactly what your theory is about Rhaegar, Aegon V, and Summerhall. It is an existing common statement that Aegon was trying to hatch a dragon at Summerhall but it ended up being Rhaegar that he hatched instead. But for it to be full theory, there has to be additional interpretation exactly what this means, in a magical or prophetic sense. Is your thesis: “Aegon V thought Rhaella had a literal dragon in her womb that would survive birth only if a magical fire ritual was performed.” That seems odd to me bc all the fire and magic seems to be to hatch a dragon from a “stone dragon egg” not to birth a dragon from a woman’s womb. One radical theory I personally created some years ago and have argued is that: Aegon V intended to sacrifice Rhaegar’s fetus to put its consciousness into the newly hatched dragon. This would be similar to what happened with Dany’s fetus and one of the eggs she hatched. But instead Aegon died in the fire just as Rhaegar was born outside Summerhall after Dunk saved his mother, and Aegon’s consciousness went out from his body and into Rhaegar for a second life! So I’ve proposed that Rhaegar had a blended consciousness of his own and Egg’s. (Clue in the name egg.) (Arguably there is a strong parallel to Tyron who is merged twin from the uterus or two fused eggs who developed into one fetus, both real but extremely rare conditions, with one egg or fetus being Aerys’ and the other being Tywin’s.) (Also second parallel to Jon in future when his consciousness become his own and Ghost’s merged.) I argue that Rhaegar’s ability to read freakishly young, his obsession with prophecy, the three heads of the dragon, and the war for the Dawn-as well as his immense sadness over Summerhall his entire life and frequent visits their to mourn Aegon’s lost children, daughters-in-law, and friends-all come from his consciousness being part Aegon V’s all along since birth. -A Theory of Ice & Fire on quora
@EmaAgafitei2 күн бұрын
I have an addition: Summeehall might have afflicted Rhaella with an interest for prophecies. And, in turn, she would have known and believed in the ideea the Prince that was promised. And while raising her son, Rhaella has passed him the prophecy and whatever knowledge was left. I would have loved to see Grrm giving her less of a passive role to play. Maybe she fought against her grandfather in order to save her son. Maybe she was a dreamer too. My theory is that first time Rhaegar heard the prophecy was from his mother, which led him to inquire further and make acquaintance with Master Aemon and some former Bloodraven underlings. It may be one of the reasons why Aerys removed his second son (before the death of said price) and Viserys from Rhaella's charge, so she would not speak them of such prophecy. (three heads of the dragon, the price that was promise). My other inkling is that the prophecy alluded to the fall of house targeryen too. It makes Rhaella more tragic as a character and it overall fits the arc of magic Targeryen women. Most importantly, she gives birth to arguebly "the last dragon" (Daenerys) on Dragonstone. Maybe the ritual should have taken place in the belly of Dragonmount in the first place, Summerhall seems like a stupid choice, to be frank.

Just realized that if the blood sacrifice was to happen if it was potentially gonna be Duncan the small. Since he abdicated his spot as heir and therefore would be less of a loss to the bloodline. And for all we know he died at the tragedy but maybe he died during the process but not the tragedy itself. This would in eggs mind cause Rhaella to birth the dragon.
@inquisitorgarza3122 күн бұрын
I like to believe that he was constantly possessed by Blood Raven considering just how strange and mysterious he appeared to be even as a young child, and there could be many hints that was little more than a puppet considering he was in constant contact with Aemond in the Wall who followed Blood Raven in the Night Watch, though that also explains how Rhaegar was able to get the prophecy back after it was lost to history, because Blood Raven had the knowledge of it in the past and potential futures.

It may have been but I don't see a royal marriage between the heir's heir happening without Aegon's consent.
@martinac8665Күн бұрын
@@sertorrhenclegane point being he kind of had to give consent at that point because the thing was done and so the matter wasn’t in his hands anymore. In TWOIAF is stated that, spurred by his brothers’ defiance of the arranged marriages that their father had wanted for them to unite Targaryen’s line with the nobility of Westeros, Jaehaerys and Shaera literally escaped to marry and an exasperated Aegon was left with the thing being done and had to give up. The world book precise that the marriage was consummated so as to leave Aegon with nothing he could do about it at that point. (He was so exasperated in fact that he then sent his other daughter to Storm’s End to ensure that at least this marriage came to be and quite frankly save a little face with the noble houses of Westeros since all his other previous arrangements had to be broken). When then TGOHH told them about the Prince that was Promised coming from Aerys and Rhaella’s line Jarhaerys promptly arranged for his children to marry, to which in TWOIAF is clearly stated that a once again very much exasperated Aegon V basically threw his hands in the air and said “whatever then have it your way at this point.” So yes, I’m sorry to say this because I appreciate Quinn’s usual attention to details but he’s quite wrong in this recurring statement here in the video. Not that this invalids Egg’s obsession with hatching dragons but yeah, him arranging the return to incest, promoting it in fact, is incorrect. In fact it may sway the perspective of what he planned to do at Summerhall a little bit when thinking he did promote it.
@martinac8665Күн бұрын
@@sertorrhenclegane I realised that Aegon may have come to see the value of this return to incest once he began to be serious about the “bringing dragons back” thing. My point still stands because still TWOIAF states clearly that he wasn’t happy about Aerys and Rhaella but indeed he didn’t oppose it legally as you were implying since he was still the king. Was it because he didn’t want to force his view for tying Targaryens to Westeros nobility (which at least before his obsession with hatching dragons it was this that he was all about) too much? Was it because at this point he was on his way to see value in it as I said tied with the return of the dragons? We don’t have these many details so many outcomes are possible, in fact we don’t even know precisely for how long he’d been thinking about it, forming ideas and plans in his mind… I still think it should have been stated in the video because it does sway perspective on Egg’s actions and intentions for the Summerhall events. @ValentinianistКүн бұрын
Egg had the right components to make dragons, but the ritual failed due to the refusal to sacrifice one of the parts or even the refusal of one of the participants. Dany raised dragons by sacrificing king’s blood, witch’s blood and her children’s blood, symbolizing the will to let go of everything else in order to gain the power of dragons. The last symbolic sacrifice was of her own life, entering the pyre. Aegon wanted to sacrifice himself, Jenny and Rhaella in order to raise dragons, but one of the components (Rhaella) wasn’t willing at all to give up her life and her son’s for the sake of dragons, and Duncan represents the human heart that won’t stand by while family and love is killed to gain power.

Without leading it, do you think there is a significance in the mirror epithests "Last Dragon" and "Last Greenseer"? Another thought I've been pondering recently. We assume sabotage of dragons to be generally a Maester thing. Yet, could there be a chance this was sabotaged by Blackfyres? Yes Aegon was thinking more about the Lords around him, but future Blackfyre Rebellions would also have had to contend with dragons should Aegon have them.

That was pretty dark. My lead suspect is the Archmaester.

It’s so sad that this is what became of our beloved Dunk and Egg. I’m sure what they did was with good intentions.

Omg right? Like even if 15-16 year old Lyanna loved this 24 year old back, Rhaegar ABANDONED HIS WIFE AND TWO KIDs because he was just so prophecypilled

@@lucasjleandro To play devil's advocate, the Tower of Joy didn't look like it had much in communication with the outside world. The first he may have heard of the Stark Executions and the revolt of Jon Arryn was when a Kingsguard turned up to summon him, by which time things had spiralled out of control. Should he have been aware of the dangers of this action? Certainly. But not thinkimg about the consequences and consciously disregarding them are different Mens Rea.

I don't think Egg wanted to recreate literal dragons, I think he tried to sacrifice as many members of the royal blood as possible to (much like Varys' "A Certain Man") try and create a portal to an actual deity (not omnipresent Judeo-Christian God, more like malicious telepaths). I think he did this because he wanted to liberate the Small Folk from several millennium of feudalism by killing The Seven (think Nietzsche: "God is dead and man killed him"). I don't think Dunk killed them, but I believe there was a massacre of Gods and at least one survived (likely The Father, so Brienne can Kill the Patriarchy later). I think Rhaegar was an intended sacrifice that got away with nifty genetic superpowers to boot.

I don't think this matches Egg's characterization at all. Egg DID NOT marry Aerys and Rhaella to each other, his son Jaeherys did. I have seen this mistake a lot, possibly because Barristan tells Dany the marriage was arranged by "your grandsire" and readers forget that that's not Egg. Egg allowed his children to marry for love, which is why Duncan the Small married Jenny of Oldstones. Turning around and forcing his grandchildren to marry for some magic visions would be a heel-face turn. Egg was raised by Dunk, there is no reason to think he suddenly became obsessed with magic, even Aemon's ravings don't suggest that. Honestly, this sounds like someone thought it would be cool if Dunk and Egg had an Obi-Wan vs. Anakin moment in Mustafar...I mean Summerhall...and built a theory around it.

I’d argue that the event as it’s laid out in the world of ice and fire doesn’t match his characterization
@Fhoulghoul2 күн бұрын
I think I missed whatever part of this is your original contribution to this theory. Almost 100% of this is laid out in Alt Shift X’s Summerhall video from years back. And most of the other things were mentioned by other KZbinrs. What exactly are you saying is your addition here?
@QuinnTheGM2 күн бұрын
I’ve never heard anyone talk about Aegon dreaming of Daenerys, nor of him assuming Rhaegar to be the last dragon and Azor Ahai? The general thought seems to be that Rhaegar was intended to be sacrificed, not that he could’ve been seen as the dragon himself similarly to the other Targaryens giving birth to half-dragons.
@Fhoulghoul2 күн бұрын
@ yeah I think that was a Joe the magician theory about how all dragon dreams are just visions of Danny’s hatching of the eggs. Shwift and Glidus discussed it in a stream a ways back too. Didn’t mean to call you out I just didn’t know which part was supposed to be new
@QuinnTheGM2 күн бұрын
I hadn’t heard that theory! I’m not saying that ALL dragon dreams are Dany and the birth of dragons - both she and Jon have dreams in the main series that don’t have anything to do with Dany herself. I think that this ritual in particular was likely inspired by one specific dream of that event.
@Fhoulghoul2 күн бұрын
@ I’m not saying you are. He just has a video where he shows all the dragon dreams post dance and how they might be showing Dany and so the dreams are “right” but just not the right person or time. It’s impossible to know all the theories I guess! I only know this one because shwift and Glidus talked about it in a livestream I’ve rewatched a couple dozen times
