Only 14 years of nothing can explain why Cersei chapters have become so beloved. When overanalyzing asoiaf has become such a tragicomedy, Cersei's chapters fit right in. If we analyse it as part of it's own world, tho, it becomes ridiculous. Chapters of the office inside a Breaking Bad novela. Not bad on themselves, but completely out of place.

You monster! Arya’s are my favorite chapters too-and by a wide margin. I’ve reread her chapters (and only her chapters) in Clash through more than any others in the story. It’s Martin at his best. Arya is the most like the hobbits in The Lord of the Rings, and her chapters hide the most allusions and plot points reimagined from Tolkien. I appreciate this as a huge Tolkien fan, but it’s not even one of the primary reasons I love her chapters so much. Her mind is just so delightful to be in and so well written for a girl her age. We get the most clues as to what Lyanna was like and what really went down with Lyanna and Rhaegar in her chapters. We get the horrors of war. We get clues about the magic in her chapters and about the magic of Winterfell when she is in Harrenhal. Jaqen is just a fascinating character. The most interesting non-viewpoint character in the series. Can you really call yourself a fan of the series if you don’t appreciate Arya’s chapters??? ;)

The little frog story from ASOS is one of my favorite chapters. A fairytale-esque telling of the tourney of harrenhal from Meera. Real events turned into a mythos is one of my favorite writing tactics of GRRM. Bran’s perspective of the world is masked through adventurous and somewhat grim fairytales, the worst part is that they are somewhat true. In that way, Sansa and Bran have parallels.
@TheBenjamin1094 күн бұрын
@ I agree 100% I love how Bran’s perspective blends with myth and legends. The way Bran’s chapters focus on dreams and fantasy make them entertaining, interesting, and heartbreaking. I love seeing Bran grapple with his new life in Clash and the competing viewpoints of the Dreamers like the Reeds and Osha and Luwin who is trying to protect his surrogate son from having his heart broken by reality. That chapter in particular is perfect; I love how Jojen keeps asking why Bran hasn’t heard this story. I love Bran going: That was really sad and unsatisfying. I would end it differently, smile.

@ Going back to Quinn’s remark of Eddard’s chapters being short and direct, concerning only the details of moving the plot along. Ned knows too much and has likely suppressed his memories of what happened to Lyanna, which is why Bran has never heard the story. Ironically, Ned isnt as close to old gods as he thinks he is. To him its faith, but Gods and magic have tangible interference, which is what we learn through Bran and Melissandre.

Thematically probably one of Martin's best work, I'm sure he's proud of those chapters. What's not to love?

i want you to revise every single point you made and then make another video including prologues and epilogues (so you can admit that Kevan the Cool is the best viewpoint in the series)
@SoCalSon3954 күн бұрын
Everyone's gonna have their rankings so I'd rather just respond to your general thoughts on each character than quibble about the order. 24/22. I think it's kind of weird to include Mel and Arys but not the prologues and epilogues, especially when some of those characters, namely Cressen, Kevan, and Varamyr, are far more fleshed out as characters than Arys in particular, but what you say about them is fair. 23. Really don't get the Windblown hate, because I see it from other people too and I think that's way off the mark and easily Quentyn's second best chapter. It's a great subversion of the climactic battle trope by skipping straight to the PTSD that follows, and I think that's really interesting. I agree Quentyn is very hit or miss but when I try to take a more macro perspective on how each chapter contributes to his overall arc I find he's a lot more enjoyable. 21. I just really think you're underrating The Captain of the Guards here. That chapter takes on a lot of responsibility for introducing characters and settings, and there's a lot of great symbolism about who Doran is. And then there's the final beat of the chapter where Doran orders the arrest of the Sand Snakes and when Areo protests that people will hate him for it he says fuck the haters, iconic scene for me. 20. Ironically I think Asha dodges a lot of the same criticism Hotah tends to get. She's decently interesting in theory and I like her first couple chapters but once she ends up with Stannis she feels like a way more egregious camera that rides since her chapters just randomly get co-opted to become the Stannis POV. They're great chapters, I love Stannis, but Asha not really being the main character of her own chapters is more disappointing to me than for Hotah since she actually is an interesting character that we're being deprived of. 19/17. Can't really speak on these, I haven't read any of the TWOW chapters and your analysis feels like it can't be divorced from that. I hate Aeron, and I think Arianne is ok. 18. Huge disagree, both on Sam's inner monologue being annoying, and on him not undergoing significant development. Storm and Feast both take him through similar arcs where he develops some courage at the end but in the former it's about realizing his own value as a person, and with the latter it's about letting go of the ideal he once thought he had to strive for, embodied in part by his father but also mainly by Jon Snow. 16. I think Bran's arcs in Game and Clash are super underrated, they really feel like a step ahead to the more introspective writing approach George tends to employ later in the series, so while they can feel like a break in pacing at times, particularly in Clash and Storm, I think they're really valuable. Also love what you say about Bran in the intro with the more simplistic language in these chapters, it's a neat touch. 15. Kind of agree? I think Davos is top tier in Storm and generally not that in Clash and Dance, but I actually still really like his Dance chapters. Davos is the original camera that rides as Stannis was once intended to be a POV character before George decided against that, and Dance serves as an interesting exercise where now we get a look at who Davos is when he's not around Stannis. You get a real sense of his love for the sea, but unlike a lot of other older characters, Davos doesn't seem that conflicted about having lost this part of his youth, it's just very nostalgic for him and that leads to a lot of really beautiful scene descriptions. 14. Pretty much agree, but I do really love Arya's Clash arc, particularly hearing all the Beric Dondarrion rumors, and later getting an outside-looking in perspective on Roose Bolton's betrayal of Robb. I love the way GRRM makes use of word-of-mouth information in his worldbuilding, it gives the reader a similar challenge to the characters of trying to piece together fragmented rumors to get at the truth and Arya gets a lot of that in Clash and Storm. 13. Yeah, pretty true. I'm rereading AGOT right now and it's a great book for sure but I think the writing style being so cut and dry at times is what's gonna finally sell me on it being the weakest ASOIAF book, which is crazy because I used to think it was the best. 12. Sorry, I don't like Barristan very much. He's just if Ned was 40 years older and a virgin and instead of having a big secret he hides from the world he's an open book and hardly offers insight into anything despite how long he's been around. 11. I don't know if I'm weird for this but I've come to find Tyrion kind of repetitive because of the things you talk about here. Everywhere he goes he just gets so indignant at everyone and thinks he's so much smarter than everyone. He's a good character but I think I often like him better when he's in other characters' chapters than being inside his own head, though he of course does have some bangers, mainly his last few chapters in each of Clash and Storm. 10. Really agree with what you say about Dany in Dance, I think that's her best arc too. I do quite like her Clash arc though, particularly her first chapter in the lost city she names Vaes Tolorro. Just kind of a vibe thing for me, but she's good. 9. I do agree Jon gets better with each entry in the series, but I think you're underrating his Clash arc. The end of it when he first wargs Ghost and sees Bran in a tree is rad, and I don't really see the issue with pacing for him or Dany, as they both don't have a lot of chapters in Clash. 8. I mean it's a meme pick. Love Victarion but I just can't give up the serious angle so I wouldn't put him over any of the big 3, Arya, or Sam. 7. I think I might just have what you have for JonCon with Brienne, I love a coming of age character like nothing else and her lamentation of how she's not the daughter her father deserves absolutely destroys me every time. Totally understand people finding her boring at times but Brienne V-VII are probably the best 3 chapter run for any character in the series to me and the rest of her chapters are also excellent, it's just that those 3 are probably all in my top 10. 6/5. I kind of go back and forth on Cat and Sansa so I'm lumping them together here, just think they're a really good example of the best of GRRM writing women, and I also just feel compelled to sympathize with them as compensation for their haters. 4. I mean yeah, Jaime is everyone's favorite for a reason, everyone has something they can like about him and despite not really having any indication of this inner depth during AGOT, GRRM does a great job soft-launching the direction for Jaime going forward in ACOK Catelyn VII. 3. Reek arc deserves all the praise it gets, though I have to admit for me all the details and complex parts kind of numb my brain when reading his later Dance chapters. 3rd is a bit high for me just because I don't really like Theon as a character all that much, but you can't deny how good his arcs in both Clash and Dance are. 2. I really need to pay attention for Cersei IV on my next read because I like Cersei but I don't know that I find her as hilarious as all that you talk about here. 1. Meme pick again, but far be it from me to judge you for favoritism when we all do that.

I’m thankful for all the chapters we get from Arya- it encompasses so much about herself, family, and those around them

Oh without a doubt Queen Cersei Lannister has the most deliciously entertaining chapters. Don’t mess with the lioness 🦁

Wasn't surprised by Melisandre's position, given Quinn forgot about her being a POV in a TWOW video.

It occurs to me that good final comeuppance for Cersei would be meeting Arienne and finally grasping what a clever political schemer with the potential to build grandly on her father's successes actually looks like. My faves: Sansa and Arya. Brilliant world-builders.

I will say for me Theon’s chapters get the ‘most improved’ between his showings in Clash vs. Dance. The Clash chapters were sometimes rough reads for me, as of everyone Theon is the most likely to descend into casual misogyny of the whole cast (honestly an impressive feat considering some of the competition). That’s not to say it goes away in Dance, its just not exactly his main thing besides the inferiority complex anymore so its a lot more tolerable.

As much as I like Cersei she has the worst POV out of the three Lannister siblings.

Ser Davos Seaworth is the best PoV in ASoIaF. Here's the best man, and even his slow chapters have really great worldbuilding that i would mourn if we lost. The reaction of the Lord of the Sisters island shows that the perception of Stannis cause is still seen as not hopeless as he gambles on Davos making through to convince Manderly.

I think Jon in the first two books is great the first time through, but if you are rereading it's not as fun since we already know the Watch and what's Beyond the Wall. But for a first time reader the Night's Watch is very entertaining and gripping military fiction. Jon's return to the Watch and dressing down by Mormont is one of the best chapters in the book and sets up the series in an amazing way. Craster and the Fist are also great and give massive insights into the Others.

Swap Tyrion and Dany’s places on this list and I’d agree entirely.

Jon Con #1 is hilarious lol. It's your list, fair enough. Sansa would be where you put Sam for me, I can't stand reading her, but interesting stuff happens with her.

I think the relative sparsity of aGoT helps Eddard, given that he is one of the characters that knows too much.

I'm with you on Samwell tbh, the same reason kinda applies to Catelyn for me to a lesser extent which made the Red Wedding not hit as hard as it could for me. On a reread thi really is more about me than the book, she does do stuff and her insight is unique and interesting, I just found her passivity frustrating at times. EDIT: wdym Tyrion's only at 1 how dare you (haven't read ADWD yet)

I understand your point on some of the meandering chapters (Bran, Arya, Brienne), however I do think that they are important for pace setting as they slow things down and help keep a bit of sense that not everything can happen at once as some things take time (a bit like this point to be fair! 🤦)
