The Hornady Critical Defense 61 grain FTX rounds are listed at 133 ft-lbs at 1000 ft/sec. Hornady specs the max muzzle energy at 130 ft-lbs, warning that extended use of anything over that could damage the firearm. I checked with Hornady on 9/12/23. On 9/13/23 they replied that because the max muzzle speed is determined from a 4" barrel, Hornady confirmed that from a 25" barrel, the speed would be 900 ft/sec, giving a muzzle energy of 110 ft-lbs, well below the 130 ft-lb recommended max for the 3032 Tomcat. Very effective round and safe to shoot in the Tomcat.

Makes sense. Nice job.
@tomitiustritus667221 күн бұрын
I think the point here is not the muzzle energy, but the gas pressure. The muzzle energy is probably given as a reference point. The gun doesn't care if the bullet has less muzzle energy when it leaves the barrel, but about the forces working on the gun itself.

I love my Tomcat. (Which I got from Bud's) Its small enough to fit in my pocket, but unlike most pocket pistols-you can actually get a good grip on it. So it is much more accurate than other pocket pistols.
@deucedeuce157211 ай бұрын
You have the new "wide slide" version? My fathers regretted selling his older 3032 with the thin slide, so he bought a new one, which has the thick slide... and he did not like the thick slide, so we bought a used thin slide to put on it. They started making the slides thicker to stop the frames from cracking with the heavier ammo (i think 72gr)... but the problem is that it didn't work. The frames will still crack with the heavy ammo, so I don't understand why they continue to sell them with the thick slide. It's just too thick... especially because it's unnecessary.

I love my Tomcat, too. Very easy to aim accurately for me. I don't ever use the sights when practicing and don't imagine I'd ever want to if I had to use it for CQC. I just get it pointing where I want the round to go and do just fine at about 15 yards.

I had a Beretta in 25 caliber that I carried in summer when I ran. I got rid of it BECAUSE I found the girth overly cumbersome. I now carry a Colt Mustang 380, which shoots flawlessly (1911-style sliding trigger) and has more punch.

I recently acquired a Covert model. Cool little gun with minimal recoil and pretty accurate at personal defense distances with SA trigger. However, I have recurring issue with failure to feed on usually the 2nd round in the magazine (with various ammo types) which I am guessing is a magazine/spring issue. Purchased an 8 round 30X Tomcat mag with finger extension from Beretta (which also fits the 3032), but the spring is so stiff it is impossible to load the 8th round in the mag, so keeping it loaded hoping to soften the spring a bit.

I've had a Tomcat for years..... bought it used (maybe $200.00 at the time) and it shows a pretty fair amount of wear and tear, scratches, etc, etc,. Never had an operational issue. My old eyes had a problem with the small sights, but solved that accidentally by finding online a laser sight that bolts on the the trigger guard, nice and smooth with no rough edges sticking out. Yes, it is bigger, but I can see exactly where I'm aiming. The new size did not keep me from pocket carry. If you poke around the internet, you'll find other ways to carry this little girl. She's perfect for when my normal carries are just too big. Buy the way.... very nice presentation.
@deucedeuce157211 ай бұрын
You should be good as long as you don't shoot heavier ammo or +p. I don't know why the heavy ammo cracks the frames, but the slightly lighter ammo never cracks the frames (72gr for heavy ammo and 71gr for lighter ammo). They started putting much thicker slides on them to fix the problem... but the thicker slides didn't fix the problem at all. For some reason though they still produce them with thick slides. I love Underwood Xtreme Defenders and they're 55gr... but I'm not sure if they're safe too shoot in the 3032 though. They're usually hotter than most ammo, but they do sell versions that aren't +p if I'm not mistaken. It's an excellent "barrier blind" self defense round and in my opinion the best self defense round ever created. Their shape makes them not function in all handguns though. You have to buy extra to make sure you test fire enough to guarantee their reliability. My father bought a new 3032 to replace an older one that he sold, but he didn't like the thick slide at all, so we bought a used (older) thin slide for about $50 for it and he's happy with that. He knows not to shoot the heavy ammo, so hopefully the frame won't ever crack.

I carry from 22 caliber to 45 caliber. Whatever you carry, learn about and practice the weapon. If you want a very safe gun that is light enough to carry anywhere. You don't ever have to rack it, but it is ready. It is also a double action gun. The unhammered trigger is around 10 pounds. Pulling back the trigger gives us a hair trigger. It is very accurate for this kind of gun. I use hollow point bullets that are more damaging.

I took delivery of my 3032 two days ago. I'm taking it back tomorrow...for one big reason. It has the worst trigger pull I have ever experienced, both in double action and single action. It simply feels crude and rough and cheap. The same DA/SA on my Bersa Thunder is light years better than the Tomcat. I also have DA only .38 specials and their double action triggers are much smoother. I was looking for a non-polymer non-striker fire pocket pistol. This is not it.
