Brutally honest video, it's certainly true that there are trekking days when one can ask more than once what the heck I'm doing here now... but these moments provide also often quite unforgettable memories that can make you laugh (once proper amount of time have passed, and you're having a sip of proper whisky in your easy chair in front of a fireplace...) BTW my favorite trick to make a solo camping trip more comfy is to take my dog with me (if you can still call it solo) - sleeping side by side, he provides some additional warmth, in addition to company. Plus informs if anything dodgy is happening nearby.

You need to get in all your layers before you get cold, they keep the warm in they won't create any extra warmth if you're already frozen... do some push up's in the tent, or some star jumps before you get in is good to get a boost of body heat. Also, get in the bag and eat your food, the warm food and digestion will also warm you up a bit. Happy new year Trev, keep up the good work.

I enjoyed following this one, Trev and thanks again for the shoutout. I am sorry I didn't get the meal to you sooner. Straightlining across the moor and endless nights in confinement... Just like in the early days! I suffer the same with inflatable mats that slide all over the place. Robin Wallace recommend an anti-slip mat to me. It's Ikea's 'Stopp' but you could probably find something else in a DIY store. It does help, can be cut with scissors and weighs very little. Hope you're having a great Christmas, all the best for 2020.

Hi Trev. Enjoyed this. Just to say I base camped from 20th to 27th December in Peak District. Weather was dismal. Kind of wish I"d taken the cloud up tent I won from you. Looks like it faired rather better than the tent I took (I went bigger as I took the dog). Actually spent four days in shower block as tent was hopeless for me personally. Anyway, just to ssy I used the down bag inside a 3 season bag and was toasty. Loved the mat. Used the nature hike mat and another similar strapped together with foam mat underneath, plus a wool blanket. Very comfy. I like your videos because you show the rough with the smooth. Camping ain't always a barrel of laughs. And yet we do it! I've been doing it for years (I'm 58) I hope to keep going until I can't. I've had some disasters, but seen some views and met some wonderful people. I fell over twice on this trip...that was before the rhubarb gin! Glad to be back in my bed though! I'll take the cloud up out in a week or too. Happy New Year to you and yours. Netta
@SummitOrNothing5 жыл бұрын
Oh, hi Netta! Good job for making the effort to get out though, although I am sorry to hear that it wasn't very successful. Glad that the down bag came in handy! Yeah, the tent did ok, but as I mentioned in the video, I have tied another guy rope to the back window which has given substantial additional support, I recommend doing the same, there should be enough extra guy ropes in the pack though! As with my videos, I always show both sides, and have never professed to be a professional in any sense, I just do this because I enjoy it and love that it encourages others to get out and do it too. All the best, happy new year and stay safe on your travels!

@@SummitOrNothing It was successful because the Peaks are gorgeous. Lovely people too. Keep doing what you are doing. Its a great thing, and good not to edit out the tough bits. Wild xamping and hiking can be tough. I wish more young people would have a bash...it teaches resiliency and confidence in ones own ability. Women are always quiet fearful of solo camping, which seems a great pity to me. Its good for the soul and one pretty quickly learns respect for nature. Good on you! Just noticed I hadn’t watched this yet Trev.... nice one mate .... you toughed it out that night for sure but you and the little nature hike stood up to it it again just awesome ... couple of things to try for a better night sleep ...on the inflatable mat try letting some air out ... counter intuitive I know but if they are inflated too much when you put you weight on it they become as firm as a rock and you get this sliding around effect and frankly it feels like you are steeping on a plank as well . I blow mine up so it’s really soft then when I get on it I sink into it ... granted shoulders and hips are barely off the ground but you don’t slide around so much. Also get yourself some soft earplugs the ones for snoring ... I know they feel funny but after a short while you don’t notice them and it blocks out all the wind flappy noise, animal scuffling noises, trains and traffic noises, natives banjo playing 😳 etc ... I tell you they have helped me sleep on lots of one / two nighters when it could have been just miserable. Good luck on raising the Himalayas money ... you doing a fantastic thing Trev.... And that probably makes a lot of sense about taking some air out of the mat - may try that too, although, I have just picked up a new self inflating mat that I am hopeing will mean I can get rid of the thermarest and the naturehike altogether. We'll see. Thanks for watching!

Can you elaborate on why you "save" your extra layers? I always put on more layers, immediately as i get cold. To conserve heat, for the cold night.
@SummitOrNothing3 жыл бұрын
I was always told that you should always save layers to put on as the night gets colder, if you have all your layers on and its not enough, there's no where more to go, if that makes sense. It works for me, and also gives you things to look forward to too!
@deandre19883 жыл бұрын
@@SummitOrNothing alright so you won’t save a layer, just because it’s your last one, if you feel chilly? In other words, as the chill factor increases, you respond with more layers. Conversely, I make sure I don’t wear too many layers / overheat, as that causes sweating which cools me down later.

You should try putting a waterproof picnic blanket on the floor of the tent. Makes a difference especially if you tend to slide about and adds an extra wee layer between you and the cold ground.

ive got the cloud up 1, i noticed in your vid that you didnt peg out the bottom guy line that connects the inner to the outer. it makes a huge difference as i found out recently in the lake district. love the vids keep up the great work.
@SummitOrNothing3 жыл бұрын
Its a great tent - I do peg the bottom bit, but dont fully extend the guy line - I have it pegged up tight to the inner, but still pulled enough to separate the inner and outer. I think that Naturehike make some fantastic tents - I have used this one a lot, but last year, I found that the Vik 1 is awesome for fair weather camping. Really lightweight.

Tent held up alright eh, considering the weather, to the wind & rain.....tha mentioned feeling a bit chilly, but tha knows what Meatloaf says, 2 outta 3 ain't bad. Just looked tent description & specs up, for an Ultralight it definitely did well. I see Naturehike reckon's on it's ok for mountaineering...i'll say this about tent manufacturers, generally they are an optimistic bunch.
@SummitOrNothing3 жыл бұрын
Its stood up in some strong winds over the years - pays to have a guy line to the rear window, seems to give it a lot more strength, without it the back wants to flatten quite easy. But, out of all the tents that I use, its my favourite, for sure !
@TheQNSzzz5 жыл бұрын
Can empathise! I tried to cross a muddy field on Xmas eve following a walking path - hopping over water logged trenches, sank in mud up to the shins, fell over several times and trying to pull out my legs against mud suction 😂 A tad disconcerting to say the least! 😆 Nice vid btw 👍🎅

@SummitOrNothing4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lee. Glad you enjoy them mate. If I was heading up in the cairngorms then I'd possible be looking for a geodesic dome tent, or something low lying like a tunnel tent. The vango Mirage is a large dome tent but quite a bit heavier.. check out our viewers top ten tents vids and see which tent you think may suit you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWXSaJuqZ9VkhZo
