Hey Summit, my towing/grocery getter is an 07 Suburban 2500 with a gen 4 6.0 and Ls6 springs. Stock converter, with long tubes and stock intake. Going to delete vvt. Based on your description, I was looking at your 8719, its only available as a kit the onsite, should I be looking at the 8701 instead? This truck will have a 75mm turbo eventually if that makes a difference. Thanks for your service

Thank you for your question. SUM-8701 is considered the stage 2 for stock springs. Most of our customers prefer the .600 lift version of that cam that is designed around common TFS-16918-16 beehive springs. The cam is easy on the valvetrain and easy to tune, but makes considerable power.

Our SUM-8718R1 Stage 1 truck tow/RV cam is a great choice, with a 750-6,000 rpm operating range. It’s a drop-in camshaft, but on higher-mileage vehicles, SUM-8718-1 is recommended. This kit contains the SUM-8718R1 cam, beehive springs, valve locks, and valve stem seals. It’ll work with your stock torque converter, but ECM tuning is required. www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-8718r1

Thank you for your question. SUM-8712 would be a good choice if valve springs aren’t upgraded. SUM-8719 is the same duration with more lift and is designed for use with LS6 springs. It would be great for a heavy vehicle. If you could move to a set of .600 lift 918 style springs and a 2800 converter at some point, the SUM-8720 would be a great match and make the most power.

For the 8701. When you say stock converter, is that a typical stock converter ? I’m doing a swap and using the stock TH350.
@SummitRacing
@SummitRacing 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. A typical converter is in the 1500 rpm range, although some of the performance oriented versions like a trailblazer SS can flash as high as 2200. Torque converters are one of the most important parts of the puzzle to get the engine up “on the cam”. Feel free to give us a call for more detailed info.

@SummitRacing
@SummitRacing 4 жыл бұрын
John, there are a couple good choices. SUM-8719 is a 209 @ .050 cam with good lift and would probably be the best choice for a daily driver with a stock converter with a 4.8. You can set the idle speed at any level to induce just the right amount. The more radical sounding version that would work if you weren’t doing too much towing and/or it was a stick is SUM-8720. This is a 218@.050 cam with .600 lift and makes a ton of power. It’s probably a step too large for a 4.8, but quite a few people love it anyway.

@SummitRacing
@SummitRacing 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Charles, while we always recommending checking piston to valve clearance - yes the Summit Stage 1-4 are designed to fit with true flat top pistons. Stage 4 is pretty serious for a 5.3L and we’d invite you to give us a call to discuss based on your vehicles weight, gear, converter, etc. Assuming you’ve got quite a bit of converter and gear and don’t mind the idle; there are also a few alternatives. SUM-8708 is the standard stage 3. SUM-8710 is also a stage 3 and gives you a little more piston to valve clearance. SUM-8711 is also a stage 4, but gives you about .015” more piston to valve clearance versus the SUM-8709.

@SummitRacing
@SummitRacing 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. SUM-8718 is our drop-in towing cam and would pick up power throughout the range and add more rpm up to. SUM-8712 drop-in trades just a bit of off-idle torque for more power up top and the higher lift version SUM-8719 for use with LS6 springs makes a bit more power through the range and higher yet due to the increased spring rate. Any will make you happy, but this will give you an idea of what to expect.

The Summit SUM-8706 is a very adaptable camshaft that works with a wide variety of turbos and will bring the boost on quickly and make power well into the higher RPM ranges. TFS-2500287P spring packs with Ti retainers would be a good example. The Summit Turbo Cams would work well with the LS7. The spread on the truck cams seems to big for how small 5.3 valves are stock .they might work good with 315 heads because those have big valves but even then the low lift and separation between intake and exhaust would kill truck torque because they don’t have that much compression a tighter intake and exhaust is making quick torque and low lift makes torque sooner but for the stage 3 and 4 truck seems to low of lift for the duration just my two cents

The 317 cast cathedral head makes the least power of any cathedral port. The is a thing called, "coeffiecent of discharge", which compares valve diameter to port volume and bore diameter. So a larger valve will not necessarily flow more air if the chamber is shrouded more by a smaller diameter bore size. If you look at how air flows around a valve, the seat in particular , which is the most restrictive part of the port, you will find this to be true. Some experts also say the 317 head has the most inefficient chamber and the only way to improve it is to have cnc work done there. Also, the 862 & 706 heads with their small, 1.89" intake valve still flow upwards of 230cfm, in stock form. Or enough to support 460+, hp. Not knocking Summits came, but... A BTR, stage 2 truck cam with 212/218 degrees duration@.050 lift will make 420+ hp on an otherwise stock 5.3 with the TBSS or NBSS intake & long tube headers & factory heads. Replacing the stock heads with 317's will drop the compression .5 of a point and power will suffer everywhere. This has been dyno proven.

Thank you for your question. There are several options depending on whether you have a stock stall converter and what kind of idle quality you are looking for. We recommend looking at SUM-8712 (drop in) or high lift version SUM-8719 (LS6 springs recommended) to extend the rpm range. The next step up is SUM-8701 (drop in) or the high lift version SUM-8720 (TFS-16918-16 springs recommended). These are about the most recommended with stock torque converters. Feel free to give our tech department a call to discuss what is right for you.

Thank you for your question. SUM-8712 is an excellent choice for an LC9. Great power and works with a stock converter as well. If you wanted to add a set of LS6 springs to it, SUM-8719 is the higher lift version. It would extend the rpm range further with their greater spring pressure. www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-174002/reviews

Thank you for your question. SUM-8714 is an excellent cam and it’s designed to work with the LS6 beehive spring such as SUM-174002. I believe you're referring to the SUM-8720R1 and the SUM-8715R1 cam. There are many things to consider when selecting a cam, usage, displacement, compression, vehicle weight, gearing, converter stall rating, etc. I suggest considering the SUM-8720R1 camshaft. This cam will provide enough vacuum to operate power brakes and offers a wide rpm range of power. It will require a 2500 stall speed converter. www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-8720r1 Check out the " What camshaft should I buy?" page from the Summit Help section to guide you. help.summitracing.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4698/~/what-camshaft-should-i-buy%3F

Thank you for your question. If it is still in a FWD vehicle with a stock converter, SUM-8720 is about the largest that works with a stock converter and makes really good power. If a stall converter is used, stage 2 SUM-8707 is a good choice if you are looking for a rougher idle and willing to trade a bit of low end torque for more horsepower up top.

Jermey Gonzales I made 410H/415T at the wheel with LS6 intake, stock throttle body, long tube headers, etc etc bolt ons. I’d recommend the stage 4, get a two-step tho I’m a 6-speed. BUT YOU MUST DEGREE IN THE CAM!!! Piston to valve will be good as long as you degree it in but never hurts to get checker springs. I like the stage 3 it’s very competitive with name brands but didn’t overshoot what else I had that’s why I didn’t do the 4.

@SummitRacing

Thank you for your question. SUM-8719 has -10 degrees of overlap and has a noticeable chop depending on the displacement and idle rpm. It makes very good power at little to no expense in fuel efficiency. SUM-8701 or the higher lift version SUM-8720 has -1 deg. Overlap and has a mild chop. These cams move the powerband up and will make more power at the expense of some low rpm torque. These cams are about as big as we recommend with a stock converter in 5.3L applications.
@gloriamaletta8667
@gloriamaletta8667 3 жыл бұрын
I think the less duration on the stage 1 high lift 8719 cam will be slightly better at lower rpm both these cams will work with a stock stall converter you'll need 3.73 gears in a 4 speed overdrive automatic and both of these cams you mentioned would perform even better with a 2300-2500 lockup stall converter you will feel more torque 2500rpm to 5500rpm and more horsepower 3000rpm to 6200rpm and you'll notice a big difference in acceleration from 2500-6200rpm it should pull very good in this powerband over stock but slightly lossing some low end torque below 2400rpm with a stock stall converter with a 2500 stall converter l guarantee you'll never notice the torque loss at all making it much more eager to rev up from a dead stop and a 6.0 will be more forgiving on the low end or lower rpm with the low speed torque with a stock stall converter than a 5.3 will in a 5000 pound truck or SUV

The overlap is wrong, way wrong. That is valve overlap. Use .005 or .006 start duration not .050 start lift, way too much start lift. Having valve overlap at a negative value is not using the real valve overlap as it can never be a negative value.

Listing the overlap @ 0.05" is not very useful, in fact, it's a completely useless number. It's WAY "after the fact" at idle speeds, because of the long period of time the valves have already been cracked off their seats, and only has negative torque effects between ~1500 & ~3000 rpm, and creates zero misfire issues, like found at idle speeds. The standard for overlap measurement is almost universally around ~0.006", and is a good ~50 degrees longer than the 0.05" number. 0.006" measurements tell much more about idle quality. I'm working on selecting a cam, and I'm trying to formulate a relationship between overlap / low-lift valve flow / displacement / compression, and how this all adds up to a certain degree of Idle misfire (chop), or lack thereof. ( then you can also throw Direct Injection into the mix ) I've made plenty of mistakes in the past........ I'd like to do this right the first time. .
@streetfighterracing1583
@streetfighterracing1583 5 жыл бұрын
Jim Brown it’s listed at 50 thousandth and that is perfectly normal because advertised doesn’t mean it’s a good grind. Only why Texas Speed Brian Tooley and Comp all give you specs at .050 lift. Sooo maybe you should fact check before you write two pages making you look like you don’t know what you’re talking about.
@jimbrown563
@jimbrown563 5 жыл бұрын
Evidently you neglected to read my entire last paragraph. The .05 duration is most definitely important from max Torque on up, but it is a moot point under low-load conditions. BTW, I was fact checking back in the early '70's, in actual books and magazines, and while I'm not a professional engine builder, I'm smarter than quite a few that I've read up on, or met. I perform miracles on a regular basis, and have for many decades, I know what I'm capable of, so your derogatory comment just makes you look arrogant. If you can't understand the plain language that I laid out, maybe you're the one who should do some "fact checking". I used the word "idle" no less than 4 times, the .006" lift is THE measurement that MUST BE KNOWN to estimate idle characteristics. Of course you could always try to argue with David Vizard, I'd like to hear that discussion, that'd be great entertainment. .
