Finaallllyyyy, Nightwrencher has come back to KZbin. I'd honestly go with the turbo cam version vs the truck cam. A stage 2 turbo cam sounds meaner than the stage 3 truck and still delivers the performance you need and want. The stage 3 turbo cam is when you want to be set on kill and bend and or break rods🤣🤣
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
Well actually, you may not believe me but, more aggresive cams actually lower cylinder pressures because they bleed off air during the overlap cycle which is why you lose so much torque at the lower rpms but you gain it back up on top because the added duration gives the engine more time to fill the cylinder. A cam isnt gonna bend rods 🤣 too much ignition timing and boost will bend rods.
@infamousnova3 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher I believe you, that's one of the tricks to running pump gas and 11:1 compression. Want the rods to survive, risk losing! Keep timing low until peak tq. 😌 on kill is all I know

Hey like the video, I have a stage 3 btr cam , it has significant valvetrain noise really bothers me, great oil pressure, fresh engine. Have checked preload and went ahead and tried longer and shorter pushrods, neither quited it down, upgraded trunion bearings, still lots of valvtain noise, any suggestions?
@NightWrencher2 жыл бұрын
LS engines arent really known for valve train noise at all. They tend to run really smooth. What valve springs and lifters are you using?
@daltonbeard95272 жыл бұрын
Zzp brand Ls7 lfiters,, blue ls6 springs, even went to the machine shop down the road that bored it for me and did cam bearings, only suggestion he had was wear headphones lol

I upgraded the springs, i would recommend upgrading the springs. These engines lose a ton of power due to valve float.

@@NightWrencherso can I put a stage 3 BTR cam in a stock 5.3 with out any other upgrades? It already came with its own springs as well.
@NightWrencher2 жыл бұрын
Its should work fine as long as you install the matching springs for it. If you install it without the right springs, the valves will float
@gordocarbo9 ай бұрын
always change springs, they are usually tired and cant deal with increased ramp rates of aftermarket cams Too many chance it/cheap out, say "runs fine saved $ etc" but they dont know any better . Springs are cheap do it once, do it right
@gordocarbo9 ай бұрын
For torque I like adding 10-12 deg duration no more wether its a car....or heavy truck. Picking a cam for lope is the wrong way...its sound at idle doesnt mean much if its a dog. Regear it get more converter.
@NightWrencher9 ай бұрын
Well this might be news to you but guys today pick cams based off of sound over performance 😂

is this on stock pushrods, valve springs, retainers and locks? i really want to swap cams but really dont want to spend 600$ on all new valve terrain.
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
This is on stock springs. We already have the upgraded springs that we will install before we install the motor in the truck. I dont recommend reusing the stock springs. Valve float is a real issue on these engines.
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
The BTR kits were $400 out the door with cam, seals and springs. You can probably save like $100 if you go with a different brand
@gordocarbo9 ай бұрын
You have to put new springs in, just save and do it right or beat up your Visa a little
@RandyBoatswain8 ай бұрын
question is, were you able to keep stock springs psuh rods and lifters for this BTR setup?

If rebuilding a 98 vortec 5.7 very mild build what cam would you recommend
@NightWrencherАй бұрын
If youre trying to just get a little bit of rumble, I'd look for a cam with something around 212 to 218 duration and a 108 or 109 LSA
@waltermontoya821211 ай бұрын
How did you pull the cam out without pulling the heads and lifters because I know the lifters would have been sitting on the cam lobe's
@NightWrencher10 ай бұрын
You can pull the pushrods and spin the cam, that locks the lifters into the tray. Then stick wooden dowels in the 2 holes in the block to keep the lifters up when you pull the cam.
@easyrodriguez6802 Жыл бұрын
Are you using stock valves springs etc?
@NightWrencher Жыл бұрын
for this video, yes, all stock. We installed springs afterward. You should always upgrade the springs. Even if the cam says no springs required, you will get valve float above 5500 rpm. If you don't care about that, you can just install them as is but you could hurt something if you stay on the high revs too long.

Will the stage 1 cam need to be tuned? If it doesn’t will it pass a clean smog in California, rebuilding engine and thinking of putting stage 1 cam but don’t want to have to worry about doing a dirty smog. thank you in advanced
@NightWrencher7 ай бұрын
Any camshaft with require a tune and thus fail a clean smog test. The PCM with read misfires at idle and the check engine light will turn on. I do not recommend replacing your cam if you plan to clean smog your vehicle

Great idea for the video but coming straight out of the manifolds instead of a cheap exhaust shop exhaust and a Flowmaster muffler like the majority of trucks on the street. Anything straight manifold especially when it gets off cold idle is gonna sound choppy lol. The stage 1 cam sounded best to me though.

@gordocarbo I have a truck norris cam in my 4.8 and I think it may be too much cam for it as well. Dyno comparisons from Richard holdener show that the truck norris is only about 9hp less than a btr stage 4. I thought it was a stage 1.5 cam when ordering
@NightWrencher9 ай бұрын
The truck norris is a 112/22X which "should" put it somewhere between a stage 2 and stage 2.5 type of truck cam but with a 107 LSA thats gonna kill bottom end torque while adding the chop

I’m building a 6.0 lq9 30 over forged pistons from summit stock rods stock crank Gonna be going in a 95 Chevy single cab. What cam should I run? I wanna add boost later in the build and be around 850-900 hp
@NightWrencher7 ай бұрын
stock 6.0 makes about 320whp or about 380 at the crank. At 15 lbs of boost you'll make about 640whp or about 860 at the crank. Swap to 799/LS1/LS6 heads for more compression, You dont need a super crazy cam to get you to 400whp so pick one that sounds good to you and put about 18lbs down with the turbo. The block can take it.

LS1 with power brakes would need something with less than 222 degrees of duration so that your power brakes still will work well. Something like the BTR truck stage 3 will give your car an aggressive sound while still giving you good brakes
