It may have been the direct sunlight in to the camera that was the initial autopilot problem..

+richolaf Was driven straight out of the garage, so we suspected condensation / sunlight to be the culprit. Annoying though!

The one thing I've noticed with these Teslas is they get off the line to 60mph really well, but then acceleration steadily tails off as if the power is being gradually turned down. What is the reason for this? It doesn't seem to happen with the Rimac Concept one, so is it due to different types of electric motors or it is deliberate from Tesla?

+stubones Well there's no gearing, and the Tesla is a heavy car, so it's just a matter of physics and engineering choices I guess. Ludicrous is just a fun option to have! Besides, when can you really go much faster than 60mph in the U.K.? 😉

UltimateRoadtrips I think its engineering choices. The Rimac weighs not much less, although it is designed as an outright supercar. I'm only asking because I'm genuinely interested in the tech behind the Tesla and and possibly being in a position to buy a P1XXD (whatever its going to be by then!). I've also been pondering if there is a way they'd be able to divert electric motor power back into charging the batteries (not KERS on braking). For eg. of the 760hp, up to 100hp could be diverted to charging the batteries in order to extend cruising range. maybe its not physically possible. Anyway, great vid, awesome car :)

Well energy used is energy lost. The Tesla features regenerative braking to take the wasted energy in deceleration and use that to top up the battery. Pretty efficient and saves on the brake pads! We're living in exciting times

UltimateRoadtrips Yeah its pretty cool. Tesla have really moved the game on to the point where an electric car really is a viable alternative to a combustion engined car. The P100D is capable of a real world 315 miles. That sells it for me. Maybe this time next year I'll have a Tesla of my own.

Teslas only have one reduction gear vs Rimac Cocept family has 2 gears spaced quite far apart. Each rear wheels has its own dual clutch gear box, front wheels are only single gear and freespinning. So when RImac cars reach higher speeds where tesla lose momentum Rimac have a tall gear to lower the Motor RPM again. Lookup the Zombie222, DC Motor drag race Mustang with tall overdrive. The gearing on Tesla Ludicrous cars are kind of silly, 1.1G+ of forward acceleartion shows how much toruqe is being sent to the ground in a low gear.
