Summoned Skull and Blue Eyes were the reason why Dark Magician NEVER had a shot at viability.

Any 2 tribute never had a shot because of Raigeki, Dark Hole, Tribute to the Doomed, etc.

Jinzo was the best back then. Though pharoah's servant was "late" compared to earlier sets, let alone tinzo reprint to undermine the collectors. 2:20 wall of illusion was great too, with that bounce effect. 3:10 change of heart and soul exchange helped a ton for magician of faith. Summoned skull wasn't really that great but better than other non effect 1 tribute monsters.

I remember using tribal removal to clear up liabilities. After paying 5000 for cyber stein, he just sits there with his mighty 700ATK. So I’d use Acid Rain to destroy it and leave only my strong monster on the field. Also, Acid Rain would later on become a great Anti-Jinzo card. Probably not optimal, but weird strategies are the most fun.

Interesting that MOF had a much weaker stat line than Mask of Darkness. Perhaps they knew and intended that Spell cards would he stronger, and this was an attempt to balance the 2 monsters
