Hello and welcome to the final edition of SUMO PRIME TIME in 2024. We deeply appreciate your support and for tuning in throughout the year. This year delivered countless unforgettable moments in the sumo ring. Who could have imagined rookie Takerufuji making history as the first rookie in 110 years to claim the top division championship? Onosato also made headlines, capturing his first title in only his seventh top-division tournament-the fastest since turning professional. In the final tournament of the year, Kotozakura rose to the occasion, securing his maiden Emperor’s Cup. Meanwhile, Yokozuna Terunofuji did manage to make his presence felt by capturing two championships. While many new stars emerged in 2024, one big question remains: will 2025 bring the rise of a new Yokozuna, and could it be the year Terunofuji is finally dethroned? As fans gear up for the excitement of the 2025 season, let’s take a moment to reflect on the year’s highlights and celebrate the new stars who shone brightest. As always, ‘arigato’ for watching, and we’ll see you again soon. Happy holidays!

It would be great if the sumo tournaments stayed uploaded. It's very sad that they are taken down two weeks after and you can't watch the old tournaments😢

Similarly, I don't understand why the tournaments aren't uploaded to this channel, it being sumo's official YT channel. Uploading the tournaments here would do wonders for watch time and subscriber count. Plus, as a viewer, it would be nice to have everything in one spot.

thanks very much Mr Morita for your passionate support of sumo and consistently producing this video series for the fans around the world. Between yourself, the vlogger reporter Chris Sumo and others, there's never as much access to the day to day of this great tradition for us in the Western world. I've been following for 3+ decades but have never felt as close to it as the present times. Accessibility matters! 🎉

It's great that we have three strong candidates for future Yokozuna, and that they're all relatively young. Since I started watching sumo, all the Yokozuna I've seen have had lots of trouble with injuries and had to sit out most of their tournaments (which is understandable! - these guys really put their bodies on the line), and I'd love to see some Yokozuna who can participate more consistently.

Thanks to NHK's policy of showing the tournament winner holding the trophy on the day 15 highlights thumbnail, 2024 has been a very frustrating Sumo year for me. Also, NHK's policy of going after the people that promote the brand internationally far better than themselves has made me wonder if I should continue with this sport.

8:52 It's kind of a shame about the Nagoya location closing since it was so close to the castle. I felt like it was the perfect place for sumo tournaments to be held. Hopefully the new one will be close by or next to another traditional location. 12:16 I remember the Onosato promotion ceremony taking forever to start when I got to see it live on KZbin. 😅 15:33 It was a good mix of wrestlers that won this year. I used to live in Japan when it was Hakuho only. 😄

Other than Onosato being Ozeki because he’s popular by vote it’s been a great year
@malmartinieofficial34616 күн бұрын
Hey, I don't mean to argue, don't treat it as an attack or anything, but do you think he doesn't deserve it? Again, just curious.
@LauraJdogmom6 күн бұрын
Onosato earned his rank. He exceeded the benchmark for Ozeki promotion by accumulating 34 wins over a three-basho stretch while ranked in the san'yaku. That run included two Emperor's Cups. Favoritism did not enter into it.
@malmartinieofficial34616 күн бұрын
@LauraJdogmom I agree, that is why I am curious what Daniel means.
@danieldaugaard4036 күн бұрын
It used to be that you had to be Sekiwake for your 33 win to be promoted to Ozeki for all 3 tournaments in a row.. he wasn’t a S for his 33w run only the 3rd tournament was he a S. That’s why favorism played a part.
@LauraJdogmom6 күн бұрын
@@danieldaugaard403 If that were ever the case, it hasn't been for a long time--not in the modern, post-1957 six-basho era. There have been several recent successful runs that started at Komusubi or even in the upper Maegashira. In 2015-2019 there was a stretch of five successful runs that began at Komusubi or below. Tochinoshin's run stared at M3w. The second and third basho have been at Sekiwake, during this century at least, but Onosato fit that requirement.

Someday the association will wise up to Nature's way, like a big shark does to having a remora along for the ride. I've researched and have yet find evidence of any remora being eaten by sharks. In fact, some remora live inside the shark's mouth, producing a healthier shark. Gentlemen like Chris are the remora the association should cultivate if reaching non-Japanese fans is of interest, and for which Sumo Prime Time evidences it does.
