Hello and welcome to the latest edition of SUMO PRIME TIME, your number one source for Japan’s national sport, sumo. This time, we paid a visit to Nishiiwa Stable, located in one of Japan's major tourist destinations, Asakusa. The stable is led by former Sekiwake Wakanosato, known for his powerful sumo techniques during his active career. It was a great opportunity to speak with him and hear his candid thoughts on being the master of a sumo stable. Wakanosato shared insights gained from his six years of running the stable and his vision for nurturing future wrestlers. The former popular rikishi remains highly motivated to cultivate the next sumo star. He passionately discussed his goals for the future, emphasizing his dedication to the sport and the development of aspiring wrestlers.

It is indeed interesting to see the different training methods at each stable. I think the yellow poles used here are a very good idea...to the wrestlers the poles will eventually seem invisible...but that means they have mastered the exercise and it will benefit them in the ring... that's good coaching.

Thank you SPT and Hiro for introducing us to a stable we don't hear much about. Best of luck to all of them, and I hope that Nishiiwa-san can produce some sekitori. It's nice that he sees and treats his rikishi as people, not just disciples. His daughter is adorable. Loves seeing her "pushing practice."

Wonderful to get an insight into a stable which is rarely mentioned. Struggling along with only Jonidan charges can't be easy, and Nishiiwa seems to have a positive outlook despite the struggle. Hopefully the stable's wrestlers can find another gear and move forward together. Perhaps there's some hope of finding a stronger recruit to help the others improve with strong training partners? I think the foreigner slots are of great importance for this.

I love learning about the lesser known stables and rikishi and about oyakatas' former careers when they were active rikishi because it's difficult finding behind-the-scenes access like this in English. Would love to see more content like this in the future. And how cute was the totally honest assessment by Nishiiwa Oyakata's daughter of her dad?

Ok, so I do sense that this is SPT's subtle way of responding to current affairs ("we have to adjust methods with the times, but strictness and discipline cannot be lost..." "there's no doubt that the future of the disciples comes first; they must be raised to be responsible adults" :)) - but can we talk about the glorious throw this guy pulled on Asashoryu at 1:54? I don't think I've seen any other footage of Asa being dispatched like that :)

A stable that brought in a modern, full time strength and conditioning staff and stopped fanatically emphasizing the "core exercises" over modern programming would be bringing a gun to a knife fight in sumo after awhile. I love the sport, but the training is so antiquated. Good on Nishiiwa for doing this, it's a start at least.

I greatly admire his fusion of old and new training methodologies. I wonder if Mr. Wakanosato would be interested in incorporating Zercher squats and Jefferson deadlifts into the weightlifting regime he's got for his wrestlers. Given the positions sumo wrestlers are placed in, I can see some utility in these odd-lifts for them.

I think it's interesting that they are training in a more dynamic way than the classic repetitive movements of sumo, but weightlifing every day is not ideal. They need periodization and other training concepts.

I would argue they're over training. Optimal muscles building generally comes from 8-12 sets per week of each muscle group. So lets say doing 4 sets 3 days a week, would be more optimal. Your body will build more strength and build more muscle if you give it better recovery time. As opposed to working it every day, you just get diminishing returns.

3:10 I think he summed that up perfectly. You can adapt to the times while still keeping the time tested methods. Discard what doesn't give good results and keep what does. Wakanosato was one of the guys who I gravitated to when I first became of aware of sumo. He had this tough, sturdy body and tenacious way of doing sumo but also had a very calm almost gentle demeanor off the ring. Wishing him and his guys all the best!

sry, i cannot watch sumo anymore. the repeated failure of the JSA and oyakata to control abuse within the stables, systemic internal factionalism, the fact that lower ranking wrestlers are expected to work for free, the hypersexist culture of the sport, the complete indifference to injury and injured wrestlers, as well as many other failures and systemic abuses, have drained the activity of any fun or interest for me. stop abusing your wrestlers. pay them. treat them with kindness because they are human.

wrestlers get food and lodging for their work so they do not work for free. They are, however, in a strict controlled enviroment in order to reach their goals and to keep the structure of sumo strong. I think more independent eyes on each stable to combat abuse and bullying is now needed to keep sumo enjoyable for everyone.

@@omfgacceptmyname i'll just say that money is not the issue but the abuse. Sumo is not as popular for parents and their sons because of the bullying and the strict discipline of the past. They have to address the abuse issue, the money issue is secondary. You are not the only one leaving sumo because of the abuse in sumo. Sumo has to stop the abuse and people still following sumo must expect and demand non-tolerance of any abuse. It will take a lot of time but has to be the way forward.
