I didn't realize I was early, yay! I agree with your list. I tend to play a lot of games that are older (I finished the kh and dmc franchises to get ready for next year). But the games that I did play this year would be similarly placed too :)

Red Dead 2 had such a damn good story that I didn’t mind the annoying mechanics. Arthur is one of my favorite video game characters of all time and Roger Clarke deserves his award for best voice

He explains why he didn't like it, it's an open world game and he must be sick of them. I loved open world games but now I've noticed all the issues that come with them. Red dead 2 is alright but it definitely doesn't advance the open world genre. I'd rather red dead redemption 1 because the world was the right size so it didn't feel empty after 6 hours of playing.

gow was superb. Def goty, sunk hours and hours into it and still go back to it here and there. Only reason i stopped playing was bc it got old, needed DLC. A small prequel or something.... I hear you on massive open world games. I grow bored unless it is a franchise that I love. But did finish and platinum ed zero dawn. But only bc my buddy was living with me at the time and really liked it. Spiderman is my number 2 this year

I wish I had realized the spiderman point a month sooner because I got the platinum on spiderman after saving those random crimes until the end of the story 🤮 a grueling experience in an otherwise good game.

I would have preferred RDR2 way more if the open world was waaay smaller. I had no interest in a majority of what the open world had to offer (except for a very small amount of random encounters that were actually pretty funny) and played it exclusively for the extremely well written main and side quests. The open world feels pretty empty anyway, as there isn’t a whole lot to do in it except shoot things once you beat the game. Exploration isn’t encouraged as a majority of the stuff you will find isn’t worth it and the stuff that is worth it is stupidly hidden away.

If you aren't sick of open world games at this point you would probably enjoy red dead 2. It's not as good as people say it is. I’ve finished the main story, I’m onto the prologue, and it really deserves best narrative. If you like a good story then maybe you should give it a chance. Maybe when it’s cheaper.

Botw is the only open world game i have gotten more than 40 hours in. At 80. Which is still not that much. In other words, i dont think i like open world games that much. But i must try out cyberpunk 2077 though. I must.

Honestly I agree with you on the red dead opinion on realistic controls are annoying. It’s one of the problems I have in the game is that the controls are a pain in the ass at times with all the fucking buttons as well as having to constantly clean your horse like what if they did that with gta when ever time you drive 10,000 miles you have to get a oil change or change your tires like fuck that I also have issues with the collecting of all that shit I’m never a fan of that because I look at it as a cheap way to extend the game (Mario is the only exception to that). But I would still have it as my game of the year since I’ve been waiting 8 years and the story, dialogue, characters, and world is just outstanding compared to anything else I played this year monster hunter was really fun until I beat and just didn’t care to play online, spider man was amazing but was a bit disappointed with the boss fights, and MJ/miles missions but yeah that’s just what I think

Felt Spider-Man was a little overrated. The combat gets a little repetitive which made me like doing the stealth stuff to just take a break from button mashing criminals. Also the main story is very short if done straight through(obviously they expect you to interact with the city but still...) you can start the black cat mission only to find it’s pay-gated DLC. I really liked Detroit was high on your list though. I platinumed both Spidey/Detroit But Detroit was fun on 3-4 play throughs to get it.
