In the 40s/50s, Sunderland were known as the Bank of England Club due to their financial dominance of English football. But it ended up landing us in a bit of bother due to being caught paying players more than was allowed at the time.

Newcastle are the bigger club right now 100% you can't spend that long outside of the top division and claim to be bigger. It's like saying Blackburn and Leicester were bigger than Liverpool before they finally got their hands on the Premier League title. Or Nottingham Forest are bigger than Arsenal because they've won a European Cup. History is important but it's not a basis for the size of the club, especially if they haven't been in the top tier for what will be 5+ years presuming they get promoted to the Premier League at some time in the future.

If Sunderland had Saudi money who knows what they could achieve. I think Brian Clough was once linked with the managers job at Sunderland, who knows what would have happened if he had gone there instead of Nottm Forest. Newcastle under Sir John Hall and Kevin Keegan should have won trophies in the 1990;s, they came very close to winning the Premier League

Newcastle are by far the bigger club. More fans, bigger stadium, more recognizable legends, more European football and succes in recent years (no trophys, but you can't rule out the Kevin Keegan entertainers era). That's just without taking the Saudi takeover into consideration. With the takeover in mind and Sunderlands League 1 status, it's even more clear...

I’m sorry, but Sunderland are minos compared to Newcastle, Newcastle are the 9th most successful (trophies won) team in English football history with 14 trophies won, they have had more consecutive season in the premier league having nearly won the premier league multiple times in the mid to late 90s, with that Newcastle have never been relegated to league 1 since their formation in the football league, compared to Sunderland who have been relegated to league 1 twice, they have the bigger stadium out of the two sides holding 52,000, a massive club in comparison

I respect your opinion but Newcastle are the bigger team. Although Sunderland have more league titles than Newcastle those league titles were won in a time when the FA cup was more important than the league. Newcastle have six cups and Sunderland have two cups. In recent history Newcastle success has been challenging for the title and champions league football. While Sunderland success has been finishing 7th back to back. I do believe people have different viewpoint’s on this topic but as a NUFC fan I believe Newcastle are the bigger and better team.

@@garethsandison978 As far as I'm aware there have been no studies of support by area. Since the two clubs are only approximately 13 miles apart, you would expect the two clubs to share most of the catchment area. If you take the size of the support as a yardstick, Sunderland are the biggest under achievers in world football. We've been yoyo-ing between the top two flights since 1958, not been English champions since 1936, and only qualified for European competition once. We're now in the third division and still getting thirty thousand every week, that will rise to forty thousand if we start a realistic push for promotion. Is there another club in the world that has under achieved for so long that gets this kind of support? The answer is no! The nearest competitors for that title are our friends up the road, it's true they've won nowt but not so long ago they were challenging at the top of the Premier League and competing in the Champions League. We've had nothing to cheer about since 1973. SAFC has the best supporters in the world....FACT!
