What I did for my cape sundew was this: got a 5L round jar, put gravel at the bottom about an inch off the bottom , poured distilled water to almost the top of the gravel, put a terrarium designed mesh on top, put peat soil lightly into the jar half an inch layer, got the adult plant and got it out of the plant pot and spread gently its soil without harming its roots inside the jar, put sphagnum moss on top of the peat moss and sealed the jar with a cork, my sundew is now 1 and a half years old. oh and I almost forgot , while adding the peat moss i added springtails to be its food source. I literally only need to do maintenance each year, or even less.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was planning to get sundews again and try them out again since the last time I tried keeping a sundew, it lost all of it’s dew since I live in a tropical country and that means we have intense direct sunlight and hot temperature which could evaporate their dews..and in my area, we have low humidity so that’s why I lost interest since I thought that they’d die in my place! But now I’ll try again and use a shade net and acclimate them better! Thank you so much for this video! Very helpful!

how do i know it is going through dormancy like actually How do they LOOK when they are Dormant?
@TheFlytrapGarden
@TheFlytrapGarden 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! And is what I try to explain and show in newer vids lol. If it’s winter and they’ve been growing outside, they’re dormant (if they’re a plant that actually goes dormant). Your plant will not make any new leafs, and the whole plant will go brown/black (the old leafs). It will die down to a little black / red / brown / white / green bulb depending on the species that sits on the top of the ground. That’s how they generally look. Do you have a specific species? I’ll be able to explain how it looks if I know the species.

Great video, btw, I just received my drosera capensis on 31 may. my sundew have been producing dew but then it evaporates later in the day. Is this normal or is it just acclimating? And should i move my sundew to get morning light only? It’s really hot and humid here - around 30+ °C everyday, humidity 80%

Hi- I found your channel by searching "drosera spatulata care". I received two plants today. I live in AZ where it's been 100º + F for weeks. These plants will be living indoors in AC. I started growing African Violets and they were doing fine until spider mites found them. But I got the Sundews for the tiny black fleas or flies or whatever they are that are here now. I am confused about the water. Can I use the Brita pitcher that we filter our water for coffee? We don't have any rain here, distilled water seems expensive and we don't have a reverse osmosis system. So what do you think about the Brita? And should the plants sit in it for the summer, or should they be watered from the bottom in a saucer which is emptied after a specific time has elapsed. My 2 plants are very little. I guess they are in good health. I sent pictures today to ask the seller if they look OK after traveling across the US to Arizona. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi! Thanks for reaching out I hope the channel gives you good info about these plants! Make sure that your plants are getting good sunlight where they are inside. They need as much sunlight as possible. About the water, I’m not sure about the britta pitchers, but zero water ones work perfect for carnivorous plants. I have links to them in my newest videos Incase you want to get one of those. Otherwise you can get a TDS meter and check out how good your britta water is. And with that meter you can check your tap water too. It may be fine for your plants but won’t know until you check. If you need any more info I’m happy to help.

The plants don’t need to be fed, they will catch good by themselves. If you feel like you have to feed them, you can feed them fruit flies or a little bit of fish flakes once every 2 weeks.

Great video but I don't agree with the feeding part. It does not have to be live insect as the plant can sense if there is nutrition in the thing they catch. In my case I feed them with fish food and they curl over it. Obviously its not better than live bugs but works. My plants are in the middle of opening their flowers and an other stalk just started to grow on each. I do the same with my vft without stimulating them from the outside and they stay closed for over a week but if I give them live mosquito for example they reopen in 1-2 days. It is my experience.
