Have to thank you for this. I actually live in Takoma Park, home of John Fahey. I've been playing a couple of his tunes, particularly Sligo River Blues (it's an actual creek that goes through town) for many years but I've no idea why I never stopped to learn this one until now. Much easier than I thought. Anyway, there was a John Fahey festival (well, American Primitivism festival but focused on Fahey) last year and I somehow missed the entire weekend. Still kicking myself for that. Learning this makes up for it.

Hi there mate Just want to say thanks for this lesson. It’s kept me going through lockdown. I’ve now learnt all the song and I’m just sharpening up the ruff edges but I’m nearly there. Would love to see more of this and blues acoustic in near future. Hope you and your family are safe in these crazy times Thanks again

First heard John in a small record shop in Liverpool England circa 1969. I fell in love with his style. Fast forward to 2921 I’m a John fahey. I felt so sorry for his sad life and sorry I never met him as I feel an infinity/ connection to him as any guitar player would with his master.

I heard this song recently and it so greatly inspired me that I am now learning guitar. It's silly to think this is the first song I will learn but here we are. Finger picking is difficult but it's coming along nicely. Thank you for this walkthrough. Immensely effective teaching style.

Not silly at all. Like you I learned to play just for one song. Mine was Bert Jansch playing Blues run the game. He did a live version on KZbin for a bloke called Dusty Wright. Take a look maybe. Good luck with the song - if you want it, you can get there 👍🏻

Great video, thanks! As a long time guitar player of very average ability, this really helped me learn this song. Totally agree, while not a beginner tune, it was very accessible to myself who picks up a guitar now and again.

Back in 1971, I would check out John Fahey albums at the local library. First I would figure out the tuning (C in this case) by listening to the song over several times. Took me hours to nail it. No tab, just listening over and over. Best way ro learn finger picking songs in my opinion.

Just came across your tutorial. Great job breaking this piece down for us! I like that you played the piece through at the beginning (which some people neglect to do), then you offer just enough detail and instruction, without dwelling too long on any particular aspects. Also, the all-mahogany Martin lends itself well to this style of play (I had a couple of them a few years ago). Thanks for an awesome instructional video!

This is the best tutorial I've found for a John Fahey piece. Even better than John himself in my opinion. I'm pleased to see this one described as intermediate level as this is only the 3rd tune I've set about learning. The others being Vestapol in open D and Bob Dylan's Buckets of Rain. I haven't got any of them perfect yet but it's coming along fine, seeing as I don't have a usable pinkie on my left hand. I have almost the same guitar too, a Martin 000-10ce. It has a very similar sound even though made from Sapele rather than mahogany. Keep them coming please 😎

Brilliant. Love John Fahey. Something to work on for the weekend. I love Sligo River Blues by Fahey as well but I can never work out picking patterns by ear so just fiddle around playing something vaguely similar. His name is Irish so would’ve been Fahy, pronounced Fa-hee. Somewhere along the line an “e” got added and the pronunciation was butchered to Fay-hee. Many Irish names get mispronounced. Mahoney, Moran, Gallagher (second G is silent) etc.

Terrific video Adrian. For the questions below about your guitar there are a couple of comments below about it being a 000-15M (triple "0") that you responded/agreed with, but at the end of the video you call it a 00-15M. It does look like the smaller 00 (double "0") so just checking if that's right? Thanks again.
