I'm really surprised Aonuma's nightmares wasn't on the iceberg. The cutscene where Link was running away from the wave of Deku scrubs was exactly the same as a nightmare he had while developing Majora's Mask but what was the creepiest thing about it wasn't made by Aonuma. Another developer made the cutscene without Aonuma saying anything and he said it was exactly like a nightmare he had.

In regard to the Majora balloons, I think they were made by the Bombers, those kids that run around Clock Town. They mention that they let a kid who wasn't human join their group once, and they regretted it. I think it's implied that this non-human member was Skull Kid. After everything he did, the kids grew to hate him, and made those balloons as target practice with his face on them. The balloons only appear in two placed, those being North Clock Town where a Bomber is shooting at it, and in the clubhouse/sewer outside the Astral Observatory.

I mean, the Happy Mask Salesman is at least PARTIALLY outside of the time loop, since he is aware that the transition from the first cycle to the rest of the game happens, in every cycle after the first one. He never tries to teach you the Song of Healing, or finds it odd that you've regained your human form. I mean, that could just be a gameplay thing, and in reality, Link has to go through the cycle 2 intro every single time, we just skip it.

also I think Kafei and Tingle are Link's counterparts more than anything else (like Romani has two counterparts too) Tingle is what Link could have been if he didn't have the courage to move on Kafei is a contrast to how Link currently is: Link became an adult (through time travel) and is now suddenly a child again, probably feeling lost, and Kafei was an adult who suddenly became a child (through magic), feeling ashamed and lost

I always thought the 'Link is Dead' theory to be weird because like you don't go through the five stages of grief for your *own* death you go through them for someone else's death. It'd make a lot more sense if the theory was 'Navi is Dead'

Somewhat pedantic, but people absolutely do go through any/all of the five stages of grief for their own deaths. In fact Kübler-Ross (the inventor of the most popular 5 stages model) initially developed it to be used for the dying individual and only later applied it to friends/family of the dying loved one.

yeah i like that take a lot better. basically because: as you said, the stages apply to other peoples' deaths, so it's specifically teaching Link to cope with the loss of someone he knows and cares about

About the Link is Dead theory... no, Link is not dead, but I do think there are a lot of valid and interesting points to consider there. Death and grief are certainly a recurring theme throughout the game. All of your transformation masks are from characters that have died and are grieving their own deaths. The Deku Butler's son, Darmani, and Mikau. Playing the Song of Healing for each of these characters helps them to pass their troubles onto you and rest in peace. Of course, the five stages of grief are prevalent in each of the game's areas. Ultimately culminating in a fight with the evil spirit Majora. Nowhere is it implied that Link is dead. I think the one that's dead is Majora itself. Majora is in denial of its own death and lives on as a spirit by possessing its mask and seizing control of those who wear it. While possessing Skull Kid, he has fun stirring up trouble and mischief around the world of Termina, but progressively becomes more frustrated over the course of the three days, especially after everything seems to go wrong for his plan, ultimately culminating in him denouncing Skull Kid as a useless puppet. This is followed by bargaining, as represented by the masked children on the moon who demand Link to give them masks and ask him incredibly profound questions about friends, and depression, as represented by the increasingly sad tone of the children's questions and the lonely child wearing Majora's Mask at the base of the tree. Finally, acceptance comes after the final boss fight, when the evil spirit finally leaves Majora's Mask. The boss fight itself might have more symbolism within it, but for now I'll leave it as insight into Majora's character rather than trying to analyze it as a part of the theme of death. I will say, though, its voice and behavior brings to mind that of a child that might not have spent its life alone and filling that void however it can (I'm using "it" because Majora's gender is never really directly stated). I think a lot of the details surrounding Majora and its fate are left intentionally vague to keep that air of mystery that makes Majora's Mask so intriguing. I've always been on the fence about whether or not the Happy Mask Salesman disappearing during the ending was intended to imply he was some sort of aparition or ghost, or if it was just some animation limitation and they just wanted to imply he was walking away. The answer to that could leave some clues as to Majora's past. Perhaps the Happy Mask Salesman is the ghost of Majora himself and that's why the moon children all resemble him? Or, perhaps the moon children resemble him just because Majora's grown fond of the idea of becoming a mask salesman itself? This part is a little too open-ended to make any sort of definitive analysis on, but it's food for thought. So, is Link dead? Of course not, but I'm pretty confident *somebody* is. And I'm leaning toward either the Happy Mask Salesman or Majora itself. Perhaps even both?

Another possible answer is that the one who died is actually Navi. She disappears without a trace after OoT and is never seen in MM. So perhaps those five stages of grief is Link coming to terms with the fact that he will never find Navi because she's gone and he's processing it in a shape he's already familiar with: travelling across the lands and saving them from evil whilst learning all kinds if things on the way. I'm sure this could be put a bit more eloquently but I hope I got my point across.
@katherineofarrogant6370
@katherineofarrogant6370 Жыл бұрын
@83Protons I think this is the case, especially with the end of the game. The happy mask salesman gives them a speech about loss, and then Link rides off in the sunraise back to Hyrule. Even though the final shot of the drawing on the stump was probably done by Skull Kid, I like to think Link helped him make that big smile on his face.

Ever since I heard the theory of the areas of the game representing the five stages of grief, I thought it was more likely that Link was going through those stages of grief over losing Navi- whether she actually died or just left, it still caused him great sadness and troubled him enough to send him on the search that led to him ending up in Termina.

There's three more that really should have been on this iceberg, though they are all tied to one larger concept. 1. Happy Mask aren't just called that because of the salesman, they contain happiness, and are somewhat related to gratitude crystals/force gems. While the Transformation mask might make you think all the mask contain some kind of grief, its worth noting that they aren't considered Happy Mask, only those given as quest rewards are. This stands to reason why the Children of the moon only want the Happy Mask and refuse the transformation mask. Even the Gidbo mask, which you might assume is cursed, lacks any cursed energy and is given to you as thanks for reuniting a family. 2. Coming straight off the last one, Fierce Deity is the guardian of all of Termina. While the translation makes it seem like you and Majora are going to play cops and robbers, the Japanese text refers to you as an Oni, and the term Fierce Deity is referring to a type of vengeful god that work for the will of the people. Since we have to help all of Termina to receive the happy mask and in turn give those away, you can consider the power of the mask to be the collective will of all of Termina. 3. Buddhist imagery and enlightenment. While at first glance Majora's Mask might seem aesthetically different from every other Zelda, all Zeldas are tied strongly to themes of Shinto/Buddhism, in spite of its mostly European/fantasy appearance. As opposed to the idea that Termina and Links journey represents a specific character death and/or the stages of grief around it, the endless 3 day cycle more accurately depicts the endless cycle of rebirth, and the toil and strife of living on the mortal plane. We endeavor to solve the problems of those around us, as well as our own quest, but we reset and start again unless we defeat the corrupted violent deities. It is only by breaking the cycle of violence and playing a song to restore order that we ascend into the heavens, and if we complete all of the Happy Mask by selflessly helping others we complete the journey of the Buddha and achieve enlightenment, a power we use to break the cycle. Giving the mask away is also symbolic of giving away your possessions to remove the burden of want, another part of enlightenment. While the Buddhist thing is mostly symbolic, the Fierce Deity Mask being the combined will of the people is confirmed by an interview with Aonuma. Given this, the happy mask being a form of gratitude kind of goes against the idea of the Salesman being a nefarious character or the existence of a mask cult, as it would appear that Mask are just one of the many tools that can be used to channel either force, gratitude, or malice. As an aside, I've always hated the idea that Termina is a literal death metaphor. But for similar reasons I've slowly started to move away from the idea that its a parallel dimension of any kind. The uncomfortable consensus with a lot of theorist these days are that Termina was created by Majora's Mask and goes way after the 4th day. That has all the same disappointment of the death theories and just doesn't stand to reason why there'd be so much history and detail to the world. It also make no sense to the motives; would Majora have created the world just to fuck with Link or the Salesman, why would he destroy the same world he created, why would the time goddess be involved? As a kid I just thought of it as a weird mirror world like the dark world, and you'd think things like Lorule would have bolstered that idea but I think even that's a little much. The idea of finding counterparts I feel just takes away from the mythos of Termina, and while it may be a convenient explanation for the reused assets, its one we came up with on our own. Its never expressly stated in game that its a parallel world and only things like reviewers and the prima guide really supported the idea. Namely I'd say the biggest issue is there are lots of individuals who have no counterparts, like Zelda, or the Kokiri. There are cases like the ranch sisters who are two different versions of the same character, or the Gorman brothers who are triplets of the same character. Perhaps we can find a vague resemblance to factions; The royal family and Ikana, the sheikah and the garo, etc. but I'd really rather just look at Termina as its own place, and it make theorizing about their past civilizations potential interactions with the neighboring Hyrule and the Godesses more fun... though the moon being a god with a face might be the BIGGEST issue with that... then again it might not be the same moon... or it is in a sort of pocket dimension, or temporal bubble... just not like, a mirror one.
@ohara1989
@ohara1989 3 жыл бұрын
I have no idea whether these are already established theories or not, but I find these very interesting, particularly the point you make about Buddhist imagery. One small idea I have relating to that is that the lonely tree inside the moon could reference the Bodhi tree, under which Buddha became enlightened. There definitely are visual similarities between the two trees, with both having a very large tree crown. Since Link receives the Fierce Deity's mask underneath the tree, perhaps the Fierce Deity could be seen as a Link who has achieved enlightenment?

I don't think Link is dead and going through the stages of grief in Majora's Mask. A series of excellent videos about the temple themes in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on the channel Save Data, intentional plug, breaks them down, not only analyzing the instruments and samples used, but also the cultural inspirations of the architecture of each. The architecture of each of Termina's four temples and the instruments and sounds used in each's tracks indicate in my mind that Termina is a real world, factually parallel to Hyrule with its own history and the Skull Kid becoming possessed by the mask and all that did happen and Link did actually stop it to save the land and find his way back to Hyrule.

I think it mostly breaks down with Snowhead. There's absolutely no bargaining going on beyond what gets awkwardly forced for the theory. If it was meant to be explicit, it wouldn't be hard to set up, and wouldn't be opaque. The Great Bay being Depression is also kind of a weak one, the ENTIRE GAME is depressed, making that the "there is nothing else binding this area to any of the stages, better crack open the depression" option.

This is the most idiotic attempt at the disproving of a theory I've ever heard. "I don't think Link is dead, because the music makes me feel like it's real." 🤦🤦🤦 How the fuck does music have anything to do with the canonicity of the lore? The music that you hear in the over world, outside of specific cases, is just a meta video game thing. Sure there's instruments, and music playing in certain zones, in lore, but the music of something like Termina Field is entirely just a product of MM being a video game, and has nothing to do with the lore. That music isn't being blasted into the world, IN LORE. You seem to not grasp the concept of the "Link is dead" theory.

The Happy Mask Salesman is Death. He understands wherever he goes, despair follows. So he sells masks to make people happy and offering healing to those who can't pass on. Hence why he opened a mask shop in castle town in OOT. Maybe Link died in the beginning but Death chose to save him instead. Giving him 3 days to live so he may retrieve Majora's mask. Right before Majora died, it's life-force was given to Link so that he may live.

Thats awesome to hear a younger generation got to experience this game for the first time with the 3DS remake. I didnt think of it this way. I was 10 years old when this game came out on the N64 it i spent an entire summer obsessing over every nook and cranny of it. I just turned 30 this year and its one of the few games from my childhood i still revisit. I should play that 3DS remake sometime.

link being dead is the perfect example why a lot of game theory stuff bugs me. maybe they did base termina on the stages of grief, honestly it’s likely since a lot of the game is about loss. but that doesn’t have to have a LITERAL representation within the game itself as a Fun Twist. things can just be thematic currents through a piece of art

Yeah, Link being dead doesn't really make sense since that clashes with the Hero's Shade(my boi) being an adult or Stalfos, depending on interpretation. If adult, he died years later, if a Stalfos, it means he got lost in the Lost Woods and literally _never_ died. He just managed to maintain his sanity as a Stalfos(or maybe the Hero of Twilight awakening snapped him back to reality.) If anything, the five stages represent Termina itself. Its current, ambiguous situation, alongside its name and status as a land forsaken by the Goddesses can point to this.

I think he lost his life during a battle, and became a restless spirit forced to watch Hyrule fall to the Twili. The Hero of Shade wears armour and is covered in vegetation and is missing an eye, the vegetation suggests his body was never found which further supports my theory.

I love Majora's Mask, it's definitely one of my favorite Zelda games. Not a fan of the fan theories that try and claim Termina was never real *cough Hyrule Encyclopedia My favorite Zelda game is A Link Between Worlds, especially with the secret old man Link boss. Also, Milk might be alcoholic in Hyrule (and other worlds) as well (or at least used in alcohol. There is a milk bar in both Hyrule and Lorule in a Link Between Worlds, and a Tavern that serves milk in Phantom Hourglass, however the wikis aren't exactly helpful in showing any relevant dialogue, and my old 3ds is in a box somewhere so I can't really verify if it's implied to be alcoholic Edit: Here's something weird in Termina: in the stone tower temple you enter the boss arena through a portal in the floor that was previously just a hole in the ceiling. So, where does the Twinmold fight take place?

The fact the flat woods monster is in the game it would of been neat if in the cinematic of the moon crashing or before entering termina if we saw another cryptid. One from the same state of West Virginia. I’m talking about mothman baby, yeah. I mean imagine him on top of the tunnel or flying around. The whole shtick of his is that he appears before disaster. I mean the silver bridge originally and then the Chicago sightings and the flood that same year. He’ll mothman has been around the world apparently there’s some cryptid in Germany that was above a mine before it collapsed and it looked like mothman. And then the black bird of Chernobyl there before the meltdown and it has the same description. Apparently it was in Japan before/on the day of the earthquake, tsunami, nuclear meltdown disaster. Just imagine mothman at the beginning to warn of the imminent disaster.

The stealphos in that game that teaches you techniques is the hero of time. He says that in the game. So I believe he got lost in the lost woods died and became a stealphos. And waited years to pass on to find the new hero to teach them how to succeed where he could not.

Isn't Kafei supposed to be Link's counterpart? He's got purple hair like Link's other counterpart: Ravio, he is the only character to experience time travel to the point where it alters his body, and he's the only other character that you can actually take control of during the Sun's Mask quest.
@tomdekler9280
@tomdekler9280 Жыл бұрын
No one is Link's counterpart, and no one is Kafei's. They have similarities, sure, they were built from the same character rig after all to cut down on animations for the parts where you control him, but storywise Kafei is just one of many characters that emblemize the game's central themes of severed relationships and arrested development. To say Kafei is THE counterpart is to ignore the parallels to Skull Kid, an immortal child from the forest dealing with abandonment issues from his friends; Tingle, a manchild unable to cope with his lack of a fairy; and pretty much ALL characters dealing with a strained relationship and/or an inability to move on.

The theory that the entire game of Majora's Mask is Link coming to terms with Navi's Death is better 100% than the Link is dead theory It makes since, completely, as fairies die after they complete their purpose. Since Navi helped Link save Hyrule, it's likely she flew away because she didn't want Link to see her die.

A point about the Tower of Babel theory: assuming it's true, when the goddess' flipped the tower they didn't ascend above them or the giants, and for them to continue to build would essentially be to build towards hell (whatever that is in the Zelda franchise). Also, the blocks with their tongue sticking out have the Triforce underneath them, which you see when you flip the temple, basically holding them over their genitals. If not that explicitly, it's certainly a sign of disrespect towards the goddess'. I definitely believe that whatever was going on in the Ikana Kingdom, it was in opposition to the goddess'.
