I so badly hate she struggled but am glad she didnt get injured. It has to be heartbreaking after all the work. It also startles me, because we get so used to watching the elites rarely fall that we can forget how dangerous this sport is.
@ashleydavis456310 ай бұрын
She needed to re do the acro series and would have probably scored a little higher even with the fall. Also, I would assume that was not her planned dismount, which probably took off points as well.

I'm a fan but not an expert on gymnastics - what is the consensus on Suni's progress and return from health issues? Is she right on schedule or is Paris an uphill climb? US is stacked with talent and I think the US could field two teams and both podium in Paris. US Nationals could have 3 Olympic AA champions, Douglas, Biles, Lee.

It's a bit too early to tell but it looks like her beam and bars are almost there. I wouldn't read too much into this routine. In a higher stakes competition, she likely would've redone her acro series (what she fell on) and done her normal dismount, and she would have over a point more in start value. She did an easier dismount after the fall as it didn't matter and not worth it to do a harder dismount. She looks great still at this point and is likely right on track.
@ravanne37469 ай бұрын
It's still an issue that she's not able to compete on all apparatuses. Nor is she competing on the same level that she did the previous quad. The Core Hydration Classic, the first of the big events, is in two months. She needs to start showing that she's healthy and at least as good as she was in Tokyo because the depth of talent is just so deep. I'm trying not to be harsh on her, but last year she was only able to perform on a limited basis and she's in the same situation now. UB and BB are her two strongest events and she fell on both of them this time around. If she can't do VT and FX as well, she's not going to make it to any of the international meets.

I’m surprised more by the dismount than the fall. I wonder why she did that one.
@Andrew-pf5fj10 ай бұрын
She already fell so doing a harder, more risky dismount wasn't worth it in this competition.

This might be a silly question but what would be the benefit of taking someone for two events when you have other AAers with potential to go 14+ on multiple events? I love Suni, but appears she won’t be an AA again
@leviradford70710 ай бұрын
The advantage is that she can go 15+ on bars and 14.5+ on beam when she hits. I’d imagine she was incredibly nervous coming into this competition; her training recently has looked GREAT. She’ll have to prove consistency throughout the season to be considered, though.

@@leviradford707 just seems like a giant gamble for USAG with her health. Inconsistency or not.

I’m going to be super critical which some won’t like. I grow tired of all the commentators now are just love love love. They never have anything critical to say anymore. By critical, I don’t mean malicious or mean spirited but commentators need to be well balanced and point out the good things but also point out the bad things. The general public and fans will never have a true understanding of the sport in the direction of how things are going. This routine is the perfect example. I just listened to two commentators and all they talked about was how awesome she was. The reality is the routine started out great. Her leaps were impeccable with perfect form, but she fell. And let’s be real here….she then balked and gave up on the rest of the routine. This particular commentator was like “ Oh I don’t blame her…I would have done the same thing. Hello!!! She is an Olympic champion!” No…she crumbled a bit and balked the rest of the routine and then watered down her other routines. This was never brought up. Once again only how awesome she is love love love. The best approach (barring an injury) and to improve mental toughness is complete the routine as planned, despite the fall. The love fest of these commentators (likely because they don’t want the public mad directly at them) really needs to stop. The commentators job is to report good and bad and educate. The fact is no one is ever going to criticize something like a skill that was done from a great gymnast like Simone Biles because of fear of backlash from the public. Heaven forbid if they report something like “that skill could have been higher or performed better” or “They didn’t quite get it all around.”
@Andrew-pf5fj10 ай бұрын
Gymnastics is also about self-preservation and timing your training. It's sometimes not worth it to finish a routine at max difficulty when the competition is not worth it. This is the start of the season and they put their bodies through hell, they need to pace themselves and peak right at the Olympic Trials. The singular goal they have in mind is the Olympics, not finishing a routine at the Winter Cup at max difficulty.
@FlyingPancake03909 ай бұрын
Suni, of all people, does not need a lesson in how to improve mental toughness lol. You're being "super critical" - you're acting superior.

@murasakino10110 ай бұрын
She missed a step on her acro series and probably just wanted to get off the beam after that-that dismount probably wasn't planned. I don't blame her she I hope she doesn't feel too bad. She still has to catch up

This was hard to watch because we know that she's battling a major health issue. The sad thing is that given the depth of the US talent pool, unless Suni is able to train and compete on all apparatuses, she's not going to qualify for any of the international meets this year. I'm sure that she'll get a buy and will try to compete at Nationals, but with UB and BB being her strongest events and falling on both at the Winter Cup, this is a bad start to her competition journey.
