One thing from the comercial stand point, I think it could be possible to offer some kind of Freemium possibility to get people used to your system and then make us dependent on this technology. Some times we need something but we don't know it until test it at least to some extend. And this is a really really amazing tool that surely all of us need in this Cyber Era. Cheers!

Thanks for feedback… I agree it would be amazing if people could try app before buying it… that said, given app is designed for offline use, I would not be able to enforce pay wall given app never calls home for privacy and security reasons. Food for thought…
@edrumsense2 жыл бұрын
@@sunknudsen I understand the privacy-oriented focus of this app. However, Maybe there could be an online version for testing purposes or a freemium version that has limitations, such as a maximum of 120 characters for the Shamir Secret feature. Please note that I am making this suggestion out of ignorance and do not expect it to be a good idea. I am simply trying to provide a possible suggestion to help you in this amazing enterprise. I wish you the best as you helped us a lot for free already
@JohnSmith-zn3pj2 жыл бұрын
Someone else suggested making generating secrets free and restoring costing money. I think you should do the oposite: make a free version that only allows for restoring the secret. I am more than willing to pay for generating the secrets but my family is much less likely to pay for your sevice after im gone, especially if they dont know what I have saved behind the QR code. I realize I could probably save a copy of superbacked on a USB stick or something but what if that is lost, destroyed, corrupted etc? I dont think you can expect a grieving family to go out of their way to find/buy a copy of superbacked, so a free version to restore secrets makes the most sense if you ask me.

Love the concept, but a little confused as to what's expected of the receiving party in terms of decrypting. Meaning, who should be expected to have the Superbacked software on their computer after I pass on? And what would give me confidence that said person would be (a) able to locate that software, (b) that it still works years down the line.

Hey Sun, great job ! I love the concept and the GUI but there is something I think I have not understand with its use. If you are several people to use this method, you have to know each five words passphrase to unlock the secrets. Do you store them somewhere or just memorize them ? We already memorize a lot of things, I feel this is too difficult to use this method for more than one or two people, isn't it ?
@sunknudsen2 жыл бұрын
Great question! For a 2-of-3 distributed backup, typically, first block (printed multiple times) would be distributed to family and friends with passphrase which would be stored using everyone’s personal password managers (adding significant redundancy). Second block would be stored in safety deposit box at bank or at another trusted facility (without passphrase). Third block would be custodied by trusted third-party such as an attorney (without sharing passphrase with attorney). This scheme has all the properties of a resilient and secure setup both from an infosec and opsec perspective.

I might be missing something, how is it different from storing secrets direclty in a password manager or in bank safes?

Wow. That was a LOT to digest. I'm trying to figure out exactly how I would use this software. QUESTIONS: 1. Does this software basically create a Shamirs Secret Share (such as 3 of 5) for a Password or Mnemonic Phrase? 2. Since this is Version 1 - how do you plan to offer updates to users? 3. Will this version install on previous versions of macOS? 4. Is the License a single use, one time License? In other words, if I need to re-install the software can I reuse the same license to re-install the software? I'm ready to BUY right now but I feel I need to understand the software a little better and how I can use it.
@sunknudsen2 жыл бұрын
1. Superbacked encrypts standard backups using Blockcrypt. When one selects distributed backup type, data is encrypted using SSS and then encrypted again using Blockcrypt (two layers of encryption). 2. When you purchase app, an email is sent including license code and download links to latest purchased released (v1 at this time). So, essentially updates are free but upgrades will have to be purchased. 3. It should… that said, I have only tested app on Monterey and Ventura. 4. App can be installed on multiple computers given their are yours (fair use). Thanks so much for questions… hundreds of hours have been put into developing app… now its time to better communicate its value prop. 🙏

@sunknudsen2 жыл бұрын
Hey, great question… the idea behind passphrase in the context of distributed backups is one can share passphrase with spouse and children but not with attorney. As a result, only deeply trusted parties have passphrase in their password managers distributing risk of loosing passphrase. That said, depending on security requirements, one can also add passphrase to label which is printed on all blocks.
@bahamu2 жыл бұрын
@@sunknudsen How would you recommend backing up a password manager master password then? I just don't see the point in putting passwords on passwords. If you're comfortable leaving the backup password with your family, why not just leave them a different share instead of duplicating one? If owning one share doesn't give you any information about the back up, then why bother putting a password on it when you give it to an attorney? Doesn't SSS already solve the trust issue? Isn't that the whole point? To me it seems like it's just introducing an unnecessary point of failure as losing that password becomes fatal to the whole system. Then how do back up that password? With SSS? Thanks for your insight!

I’m just a normal guy with a little bit of crypto and I’m trying to figure out the best way to back up my stuff and keep it all secure. Of course I would like to have my emails be secure and all that as well. Do you have a simple video or a course that just starts from square one and explains for instance what’s the best email service to use? I’ve heard proton mail is good but I’ve also heard it’s not completely secure because you can read the subject lines or something like that. Then what’s the best VPN? I’ve heard all kinds of things all over the place. How should we be doing back ups? This new program who created looks interesting but I don’t understand exactly what is happening. It looks like you’re just backing up a phrase. But this is not backing up your data, correct? Thank you for any advice.

In 20 years time successors need an app to access their inherited secret. Will they know which app? Will it run on their computer? Will they be knowledgable enough to strictly use air gapped systems. Also people are really bad at storing a pass phrases, especially multi decade. As I understand, you will not be able to recover without the original pass phrase even if you have all the blocks.With classic multisig you inherit access to all mnemonic seed phrases through different notaries, that's it. No need for additional pass phrases. Successors only need the knowledge how to restore from seed phrases.
@pixlplague2 жыл бұрын
Damn... Super bonne idée mon homme! However, if I may so brash to suggest something, I would see a benefit to have an option to require ALL QR codes to access the secret if that's technically feasible. See, let's say I keep one with me, one with my spouse and one with the notary the 2/3 works well. But let's say I want to give one to my spouse, one to my child and one to the notary, then if my spouse and kid decide to get together the secret is accessible... I know this is quite niche but I think there's something to it. Good job nonetheless. Joyeuses fêtes à toi!

I think there would also be a value for the minimum program which can decrypt in a standard language which will last the test of time. If your app isnt maintained and becomes incompatable, or buggy or something, it would be stuck. But if you wrote a seconary python or similar application which takes the raw string from a qr code app (which will always be available), the password, and outputs the secret. I know it would give me peace of mind to know my relatives dont have to figure how to install this app, worst case, just run a single python script. Less magical but more auditable
@JZL003Күн бұрын
Can even then print on the back this python script. Definitely more tedious but self contained where my relatives need to type out (or copy from a paste bin) a python script, use a qr reader for the password and done. I wonder if you could even store the python script (compressed?) on a secondary qr code. Also would need minimal libraries
@JZL003Күн бұрын
(I also don't think this hurts your business because it's only decrypt not encrypt. In principle someone could reverse all the steps, but like you say, this isn't inventing new cryptography (nor should it, no security by obscurity). So someone could always use shamir secrets and blockcrypt by themselves, so people who will buy it are those not savvy enough or want to trust themselves to do it
