Could you please do a video about setting up/using a Raspberry Pi with Superbacked. A step by step tutorial please!! This would be amazing as then us Mac users would not have to buy a separate Intel based machine to be able to run Superbacked since Linux distros won't work on the new Apple Silicon Macs.

I’d like to see demo on how it works please? Website is a bit vague in the faq
@sunknudsen13 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the feedback… guess it’s time to go down that rabbit hole and record a demo episode. There is so much to Superbacked that isn’t immediately evident.

Have you looked at ISOSTICK, it will emulate a CD-Drive, will expose the image or iso file to boot and has also a hardware switch for readonly.
@Mr-CleverКүн бұрын
Worth mentioning that SD cards have had this switch for many years 😁
@sunknudsenКүн бұрын
Thanks for joining conversation… I believe that this switch only signals to OS to mount device as read-only vs enforce it at the hardware level. Perhaps others can corroborate this? Has anyone tried to bypass this on Linux or macOS? Interesting topic for an episode!

I think there would also be a value for the minimum program which can decrypt in a standard language which will last the test of time. If your app isnt maintained and becomes incompatable, or buggy or something, it would be stuck. But if you wrote a seconary python or similar application which takes the raw string from a qr code app (which will always be available), the password, and outputs the secret. I know it would give me peace of mind to know my relatives dont have to figure how to install this app, worst case, just run a single python script. Less magical but more auditable
@JZL003Күн бұрын
Can even then print on the back this python script. Definitely more tedious but self contained where my relatives need to type out (or copy from a paste bin) a python script, use a qr reader for the password and done. I wonder if you could even store the python script (compressed?) on a secondary qr code. Also would need minimal libraries
@JZL003Күн бұрын
(I also don't think this hurts your business because it's only decrypt not encrypt. In principle someone could reverse all the steps, but like you say, this isn't inventing new cryptography (nor should it, no security by obscurity). So someone could always use shamir secrets and blockcrypt by themselves, so people who will buy it are those not savvy enough or want to trust themselves to do it

Hey, thanks for sharing your thoughts. We are actually working on exactly that… the project is called Superbacked core (not published yet) and will likely be written in Rust.

I really like the attention to detail that you put into your projects, from the tools and hardware that you use, to superbacked ! But I have a burning question : Let's admit that I have made a really important backup and I store the QR codes inside a safe or in a bank, how can I be sure that the software, the website or even you will be still arround in 20 years ? How can I or someone else, restore a secret if the software is unavailable when I need it ?
@sunknudsen13 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the push! To answer your question, now that Superbacked is source available, anyone can clone repo and build app from source (for personal use). As a result, if I or Superbacked goes away, community will be able to help with recovery.

What about the forensic bonanza that Mac OS is today? Things like terminal saved state files and such. Not to mention APFS snapshots. In case you’re interested google “Saved by the Shell: Reconstructing Command-Line Activity on MacOS” Why the emphasis on Intel?

Not sure storing this on paper is a good idea as paper can easily burn or degrade I would never store keys worth millions on paper
@sunknudsen13 сағат бұрын
Thanks for sharing your feedback… the idea behind Superbacked distributed backups is that one can loose a block and still be able to recover.
@markthelie66613 сағат бұрын
@ yes I understand it’s similar to a multisig the issue I have is now it introduces more complexity with storing keys , seeds and now this , average people would not use this and anyone wont a huge amount of btc would not use this

Hello Sun, Could you please confirm the text storage limit for Superbacked? Additionally, would it be possible to securely store a 4096-bit private PGP key on the superbacked?
@sunknudsen13 сағат бұрын
I would recommend trying but TL; DR; Superbacked blocks can store about 6 BIP39 24-word mnemonics. For larger payloads, I typically encrypt payload using AES-256 and use Superbacked to back up encryption key.

if the env is not secure, dot type anything sensitive. never. regarding login password, use 2 factor (ex: yubikey for challenge-response type for session login, or webauthn for web). use your yubikey with static password as second half of the password (you type the first part, the yubikey types the second part of the password).

I was very skeptical of this project at first because of its proprietary nature. This is a step in the right direction. I'm 100% in favor of developers making ethical software AND getting paid to do it. I've tried rolling my own solution like this before for estate planning and this is such a simple solution for creating secrets where I can distribute custody. Perhaps consider dropping FUTO a line as they're always looking for projects like this to throw money at.

I wonder if Superbacked would be a good solution for an emergency sheet for a password manager such as Bitwarden. Typically these contain backup codes and related information in case of loosing access. The information is printed in plain and stored in a safe etc.
