I was curious about Tutanota, and found this video. Registered an account there despite the cons, and I should say that as of April 2023 all of UI/UX issues listed in the video are already addressed.

I have nothing against Tutanota, as it seems great, but I'm definitely more of a fan of Proton and the fact that they're trying to essentially replace Google & Apple's ecosystems with more secure and privacy-friendly alternatives. I'm all for that. It's part of the reason why I have so much support and love for Gab; controversies aside, they truly are trying to create what they call a "parallel economy" by creating alternatives to any services that don't have any competition. It's great stuff.

Protonmail with the new contact manager is encrypting contacts. It is beta right now but is turned on, Also proton drive is now running which encrypts the files across many servers, as the files are spread out, to make it almost impossible to decrypt the files. There is also an encrypted calendar now as well.

I don't know what to choose... One one hand I prefer Tutanota's approach and security (there was a bit of a scandal with proton mail). On the other hand I'd like to eventually switch completely to to an encrypted system. In the end I think I'll use both, Tutanota for more sensitive communication and Protonmail to replace Gmail. Damn I'd love to get rid of GMAIL once and for all. I don't mind paying like 80$ per year, if the expense is worth it. Also, with regards to Tutanota, it's easier to improve the UI rather than changing the whole philosophy (like with Proton Mail)

Thanks for this video Sun! I recently had a family member have their bank account compromised, and it got me thinking about tightening up my digital security. I’m planning drop my current mail service in favor of something a little more secure like Proton. It’s not too often that I send personal emails anyway, so why not have something that is a little more user-focused instead of ad targeting & data collection focused?
@garolstipock2 жыл бұрын
I find that if used "correctly", Tutanota's lack of advanced features dont end up being a big deal. In my experience, few people I have email exchange with use these privacy focused services. Those that do are truly few, and even then we don't exchange enough email so that needing a search feature is critical. Easy enough visually scan. Also partnered with the idea that if exchanges are truly private and critical, they will not live at rest forever, I delete old messages in my inbox.. unfortunately with tutanota this has to be done manually as there is no way to set this automatically. In the end, I get little active and robust in the way its privacy focused ideal is intended, nor keep the messages long enough to need to archive or keep some treasure trove searchable that it is a specific use-case service for me. Wish I could tag messages. AUto-tag would be sweeter. Wish I had a more exciting life to warrant is use more, but I dont. If you are a hardcore user that has a large exchange of email, Tutanota will frustrate you I'm guessing.

If I do not write emails to friends or family but only use it for newsletters and online shopping etc. Does it make a difference to use an encrypted service? Because the companies who send me emails are most likely using services like Gmail or 365 and do not encrypt.
@sunknudsen2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mio, what I really like of Proton and Tutanota is that emails are encrypted so only the recipient can read email once it is resting on their servers. This doesn’t solve all privacy problems but is way better than most providers. That said, for your use case, if you are OK with these emails being considered public domain, all good.

I'm embarrassed to ask - but does anybody know an email-provider that includes a sense-able recovery-method? By that I mean a method of recovery that does not allow to change the internal data with the fucking password, when the mail-address got hacked. Or in other words: When I put up a phone number to recover my account, I do not want anybody to change the telephone number without having access to the phone, but only the password. The same goes for secret questions, you can change without actually having the answer to it, or "recovery codes" that can be accessed inside the mailbox by simple putting in the password again. So I want a recovery method as a second line of defense. I'm really glad for any helpful answers I can get.

if you are looking for privacy do not use an email. That simple. Tutanota and Protonmail are good but not perfekt clients for illegal stuff, but for every day using email client the are not suitable. Bad calendars with no different event category colors, not pgp or smime support with Tutanota. Small storage etc.. Tutanota already had to implement a function in Germany at the request of the German authorities that emails sent to external email providers are not encrypted directly, but only afterwards.
