Saw it on Tuesday night (2nd) after a year of anticipation, was the best thing Ive ever seen on stage, absolute genius at work, inspirational artistry on all fronts, lighting, staging, singing, conceptually brilliant.... As an aside I had Sir Ian McKellen sat immediately behind me and when the second act started I overhear him whisper 'is this really live?" and it was all I could do not to turn round and say yes its happening now and you are my hero...but I behaved.

We went to the last night (SJP & Matthew Broderick were a few rows ahead of us), what a mistake though …. we should have booked an earlier show so we could go again! Now we are determined to save up & go to Broadway. I found your comments fascinating about Nicole wanting to bring the three Brits. I’d definitely take Tom Francis for Joe but gone for two established Americans for the other roles. Either way NY here I come!

That opening BRAVO! 👏 As exciting as this season is on Broadway wowzers is that 24-25 season shaping up to be just as interesting (hope I can say the same when tours are announced as well) I feel like this isn't the first "surprise" we can expect to see leading into the fall so book travel now everyone lots of excitement on the way. As far as an alternate I do believe she will have one & you're on the right track just hard to pinpoint who because it feels so far off.

I'm so happy I had managed to avoid the spoilers for the start of Act 2 before I saw it haha. I had seen a brief clip of one of the videos but I just assumed it was filming for promotional material not actually live in the show. Was absolutely shook by it! Loved the opening here too ;) In terms of Broadway, I would think it has to be a fall production as you said due to Grace's schedule and the already busy revival season. But yes very curious about the venue - I kinda hope it's at the Majestic (and that I get to see it) as I've never been to that theatre lol, but I also fell in love with the Hudson when I saw Merrily and think the vibe would fit well, so if there is a hotel they can go through that would make sense to me!

This is VERY exciting news! I can’t wait! I thought of the Hudson for Sunset too because of ATG and because the Hudson does limited runs . If anything going in after Merrily? Majestic seems unlikely since the theater probably needs quite a bit of work, post-Phantom. Mondays are dark on Broadway for most, but not all, shows. I had not heard that Plaza Suite was transferring. I saw it when it was at the Hudson. She was better than he was.
@lindakahler4799

Very excited. Thinking The Palace theater. The venue kicked out SpongeBob SquarePants for renovations. It's a corner theater on 50th and supposed to be reopening this fall. Also has a hotel attached plus new technology in the theater space. Have a feeling that Merrily may extend with new cast. Currently extending to July and if it sells may continue there. Seats are very uncomfortable with no elevator. Only possibility is the fact limited runs are there. Marquis theater is very new as far as NY theaters go. Saw Woman in White there with screen image of train running down villain

The question of where is FASCINATING, the Savoy adds so much to the experience in the London show with its glorious art deco interior (almost standing in for Norma’s mansion), complementing the minimalist staging. I think the Hudson is too small, not grand enough for me. I like the idea of the new Palace, since the wonderful interior would have been renovated, only that area outside the theater/new complex is ridiculously crowded with tourist traffic, so I don’t think friendly to the 2nd act opener. If it would be at all possible I would love it in the New Amsterdam 😊 but that ain’t going to happen. I do agree the Shubert is probably the best bet, with the Majestic as a backup. ALSO I could see the Lunt-Fontanne if Sweeney ends its run towards the end of the year, that area around the theater is fairly calm and you have access to the Marquis breezeway and Shubert alley if you really wanted to do a walk about for the act 2 opener. The Lyceum and (the gorgeous) Belasco are also contenders if the Lunt and the Palace are too large of a house.

Its so frustrating that the run was so short and so many people won't get to see it before the transfer. It feels like this was just a warm up for NY, because lets face it, it's Jamie Lloyd. A Broadway transfer was always going to happen, so why so soon?

As soon as me and my friend left the theatre we said 'this is going to broadway'. I do think at the moment through a lot of high praised newer Broadway shows are the shows that are more on the positive light hearted side whereas over in the UK it's more the stripped back grittier stuff. That being said the Patti lupone revival of sweeny todd years ago was pretty stripped back and gritty and it did well on Broadway.

I thoroughly enjoyed your review and looking forward to seeing it when it comes to Broadway. The only reason I don't think it will be at the Hudson Theatre is its seating capacity. It's less than 1,000 seats. I think they'll look for a venue with a larger seating capacity.

I’ve heard speculation that Lea Michele might be in the mix as either the alternate or as a replacement Norma when the time comes. Some have said that it’s unlikely she’d be interested in doing any role only once a week, but she missed a lot of performances in FUNNY GIRL as her run in that progressed and, whatever it is that’s going on in her life that kept her missing performances, it would be a lot easier for her to show up once a week than 8 times a week. And audiences who’d want to see her would have a better shot at doing so.
@charliehorey9886
@charliehorey9886 Жыл бұрын
i don't think it true that she missed a lot of performances. there was one isolated week when her son was in the hospital which is pretty understandable. she was amazing in Funny girl but she is what....35? it seems wildly inappropriate for her to play a faded star no longer in her prime. I cannot wait to see what she does next but this does not seem it.

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but I'm personally not excited about seeing this production. I saw the orig. Broadway production of Sunset Blvd w. Betty Buckley & found her performance rapturous & the set design spectacular, but didn't think much of the rest of the show. Apart from the two hit songs, I thought the score was too sing-songy & a snooze. And as far as this new production goes, I think 'stripped-down' versions of shows are too gimmicky & easy awards show bait. However, people seem to find them interesting & I think between the acclaim that it's received in London, combined w. Scherzinger's high profile from the (dumb but) highly-rated TV show The Masked Singer, it will be a hit.

Glad you finally brought it up because its all i was thinking about as you were speaking, LOL. She is absolutely a name in the UK and absolutely not one in the US. Like do we know who she is? Sure. Do we watch things because shes on it? No. I'm sure that all of her solo success was UK/Australia based. Which is why I found it curious when you mentioned that she had pull with the production to bring the cast over. Could be to protect her here as it would be drag and drop? Because bringing the show over with just her (as a marquee name) makes no sense to me. They must be betting on the performance/production as a whole to create the necessary buzz to be a success.

You must not be very familiar with Broadway. First of all...Why would they be in Times Square? Unless they were at the Winter Garden, which I HIGHLY doubt, but even then....There's no theater directly in the middle of Times Square. They will more than likely be on a side street. On top of that, there are outside performances in NYC all the time. (Including ones in Times Square, actually.) Ham 4 Ham is the main one that comes to mind. They performed outside of the Richard Rogers on a regular basis and there was always a crowd there to see it with security guards and people directing traffic. Yeah, NYers can be rude, but when it comes to something like this, it will draw a crowd the same way as it does in London.

scaled back versions of musicals where the sets are minimal... what you your opinion? The music may may be great, but the glamour.. the theatrics, and the showmanship; which set 'musicals' for the common man apart from operas? Case in in point... I had the privilege of seeing 'Love Never Dies' in London. It was boring.. scaled back and not the physical 'splash' that the original Phantom was. I was then in Sidney where I saw their production of 'Love Never Dies'. The physical/ visual 'POW' was amazing. They did not hold back. Lyrics were great, but the visual impact was 10x the London production. Some shows lend themselves to minimal theatrics.. i.e. Chicago .Others, built their reputation on theatrics... Phantom. A scaled down version of Sunset... with more blood... does not sound appealing. your thoughts?

@@emhu2594 Maybe you should have seen the movie first. It's a masterpiece and I just don't get what is so corny about a turban, given the time the story takes place in!

I feel like a lot of people here on the US know who nicole is but I don’t feel like she is a big draw. I would be interested in seeing it because (and this may be controversial) i find it a bit challenging to think of her believable as a fading actress no longer in her prime….

Watch it and make a judgment. Many naysayers like you became aysayers after watching the show . You might be surprised how this show became the best show in the West Rnd in London during its run . There was a unanimous critical acclaim this show generated. To see is to believe you will be entertained in a very emotional way . See you all in Broadway don’t rob yourselves of the chance to witness a a truly artistic feat .

Looks more like 1984 dystopia & less 1950 Hollywood culture. Thanks. The United State’s version is far superior.

By the United States version, do you mean the original production which transferred from London? Just like this production is about to do, it's opening on Broadway later this year.

I mean people are still saying Scherzinger is too young - Lea could still play Betty tbh.

Nicole is not a name here. The production is the selling point.

By "here" do you mean the US or the UK? I don't know how to compare her ability to draw tickets on either side of the pond but I think she has a more recognizable name/face in the mainstream than many seasoned Broadway leads just by having a career outside of theatre alone.

Nicole still has cult gay following hahaha. Its true though. And technically, she has a more recognizable name than a lot of the celebrity castings in broadways in recent seasons

Norma has been miscast. Sherzinger is too beautiful to be normal. Too young. Norma Desmond should be tragic.

@@MickeyJoTheatre No I haven't. I don't want to be mean to Sherzinger, who is quite a specimen for ( I will not ask her age), but the whole point of Norma Desmond is the fading beauty clasping to her youth and how utterly tragic that is. Sherzinger is not a fading, tragic beauty, but who knows, maybe she can convince me if I ever watch her perfomance.
