Plant-based nutrition - emphasizing consumption of vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and fruits - can prevent, treat, or reverse certain chronic diseases in adults based on current best research evidence.
The chronic diseases studied most include obesity, high body mass index, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, and hyperlipidemia. Plant-based diets, however, are not a cure-all and should not be substituted for existing medication or therapy unless supervised by a physician.
Statements Based on Research Evidence
Individuals who report eating more plants have lower body mass index (BMI) and lower blood levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, fasting glucose, C reactive protein, and inflammatory profiles than do individuals who report eating fewer plants in their diet. Strong evidence-based on over 700,000 subjects in population and cohort studies.
Plant-based diets can reverse existing coronary artery disease (evidenced by angiography) and can reduce body weight, oral diabetic medication needs, and blood levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, fasting glucose, c reactive protein (CRP), and hemoglobin A1c. Moderate evidence based on randomized trials and cohort studies that are mostly short-term (weeks to months) and have varying rates of adherence to plant-based diets over time.
Individuals who report eating more plants are less likely to develop hypertension, ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and cancer overall in subsequent decades. Moderate evidence based on population and cohort studies that lose some subjects over time and have diverse methods and outcomes (e.g., are heterogeneous).
Individuals who report eating more plants are less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, some cancers (pancreatic, lymphatic, hematopoietic), and from all-cause mortality. Moderate evidence based on population and cohort studies that lose some subjects over time and have diverse methods and outcomes.
Individuals who eat exclusively plant-based diets have lower rates of obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease than those who eat plant-based diets with some animal products. Weak evidence based on population and comparative studies with minorities of participants on exclusively plant-based diets and with variations in how these diets are defined.
Additional Considerations
The evidence mostly supports increased consumption of plants as beneficial, in contrast to simply removing animal products from the diet. Within the category of plant-based diets there is some evidence that eating only plants is best, with growing evidence that a whole food plant-based diet has more benefits than one that contains refined plant foods.
Many different plant-based diets have been used in research studies, making it difficult to generalize results and raising concerns in some cases (e.g., highly restrictive low-fat diets) about the ability of individuals to adhere to these diets for long periods of time.
Some of the observed health benefits of plant-based diets may be due to other lifestyle interventions that often accompany these diets, such as smoking cessation, limited alcohol consumption, stress reduction, and a greater emphasis on exercise and fitness.
We support the American Medical Association’s resolution from 2017 to “call on US hospitals to improve the health of patients, staff, and visitors by providing a variety of healthful food, including plant-based meals and meals that are low in fat, sodium, and added sugars”

I switched to whole-food plant-based a month ago. Clothes fit better, need less sleep, feel full but without the "food comas", and (to my surprise) saving money. I'm not even being super strict about it, just trying to focus on getting more fruits, veggies, beans, whole grains and nuts. After eating all of that good stuff, I'm too full to even think about my old processed favorites.

Part of the problem is key is in moderation. We as Americans tend eat in excess. i.e. eating 1 or 2 servings of meats per week rather than daily. But again, that's just the start

@@harlequincat Unfortunately that won't work for me. Starches in rice, potatoes turn to sugar which causes a higher blood sugar levels. I still eat them but eat in moderation. Red meat is not a diabetics' friend. Again I eat but in moderation. I stick to some fish, lamb or ground turkey. I love salad more than anything. One diet or type does not suit everyone. This is what is working for me and lowering my need to rely on less diabetes medication.

Carnivore is not for everyone. Especially people genetically predisposed to high cholesterol and high blood pressure. While it’s true there are more forms of protein in meat than any other source, there are far more nutrients in edible green plants, including protein that can supplement. Don’t get me wrong I eat meat for the protein but I hate the carnivore diet propaganda. I’ve seen plant based diets stave off diseases, get and keep people off of prescription drugs for years.

Records indicate that fringe was first used on the flag as early as 1835. It was not until 1895 that it was officially added to the national flag for all regiments of the Army. For civilian use, fringe is not required as an integral part of the flag, nor can its use be said to constitute an unauthorized addition to the design prescribed by statute. It is considered that fringe is used as an honorable enrichment only. (Military tradition)

Stop pushing this starvation diet. We are not rabbits, we are humans and we are omnivores. We need meat and animal foods in our diets to thrive. We need complete amino acids to sustain ourselves. Our skin needs collagen, we need fat soluble vitamins, we need need vitamin b12, we need heme iron, Especially women!! Plants sure have many benefits but you don’t absorb all the vitamins that are in it on paper due to anti nutrients and the soil quality. A plant based diet is good for a few years until your reserves run empty and you find yourself malnourished, with dry hair, sickly and wrinkly looking skin with yellow/grey undertones and sunken eyes. If you don’t provide your body with meat it will eventually start eating away at itself to sustain life. Your wallet will be empty from all the supplements you have to take to feel somewhat human. Here’s a shocker: Cooking at home with fresh ingredients is what you should be doing. A balanced home cooked meal including fish or meat and vegetables is what humans need. It’s not rocket science. No amount of cherry picked “science” is going to change the fact that we are omnivores. I never seen a study where they followed people long term, like 10 years later. I know there are some short term benefits due to the detoxing nature of plants but it’s not good to be on a chronic detox forever. There’s a reason 84% of people quit the vegan diet, it’s because they feel like crap.

@@annikaelisaa1879 it certainly is the best teacher. My experience was during my rock climbing competitive time, I felt very flat having reduced my meat intake to switch to lentils etc . Within a year I felt my strength and endurance go down, also mood. I switched to grass fed animal products and saw a dramatic change in everything for the better and my climbing performance shot up! Even my man juices quadrupled in volume and density! I wish we didn't have to kill animals to have the best nutrition, but I have come to terms with the cycle of life. I have learnt a lot about better animal husbandry and try to source it that way. Greg Judy regenerative rancher is a real inspiration on what we should all be supporting these days.

The focus is no longer about the doctor taking their hippocratic oath to care for the sick for most. It is a business to them (for most). How many times have you seen a drug rep walk into a doctor's office to sell their product or give them samples for their patients to try? They depend on us to be and stay sick? Doctors received bonuses to get patients to take the COVID-19 vaccine. If we start adopting healthier we'd go to the doctor less.
