I surf beach breaks . It’s mayhem . Proners are a menace to each other . Good luck because then don’t follow any etiquette. The amount of times I have just gotten back in car and not bothered has really increased over last 12 months. I agree less quality and less crowd is definitely the way I deal with it. Crowds equals stress which kills the whole reason i am out there

Yeah, it has got busier everywhere at the mo because of covid. And I agree with you about the Proners. As paddleboarders we need to be the best example on the water even if most others aren't. Lets hope it calms down a bit and you find some fun waves soon. Thanks Reuben

This is a great video to teach all the beginners etiquette and all the experienced surfers with a reminder. . I love how you taught SUP’s how to integrate themselves into the lineup and that it’s already intimidating when SUP’s come paddling out because they have the advantage. This was a refresher to me as a supper. Thanks!

My 2 rules are: Be safe and don’t compete. I love sup. It’s opened up so many places away from conventional surfers. I’ve discovered and surfed many waves. I love bouncing along a rock garden or cliff if there are no waves available. It opens me up way more to enjoying the project that is life. Turns out that is way more satisfying to me than just sitting in a lineup.

Brilliant vid - I think that last point is so right. We have the ability to surf less quality stuff than prone surfers can so using our tools for the right job can really help the atmosphere. I learned that kayak surfing way back...Mind you it's always hard to tell who is waiting in the line up genuinely and who is just sitting gossiping to their mates!

For me the most one of the most important things is missing here... board bailing. If you just flop off a 10ft board with a 10ft leash and let it thrash around in the whitewater you have a really good chance of hitting someone. Learn to kick out, it’s efficient, stylish and it tells other riders that you are competant. Anyone who has been hit by a 10 or 12kg sup board will have an attitude towards them.

@SoniaHamiltonSnowfrog 3 жыл бұрын
@@SUPboardermag what does it mean to "kick out"? When I wipe out and my SUP goes everywhere I feel guilty because I don't want to hit anyone, even with a 9 foot board and 7 foot leash. Also, what do you do when you're caught inside? You can't dive your board and if you ride the whitewater in you end up almost at the shore.
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 жыл бұрын
@@SoniaHamiltonSnowfrog a ''kick out' is when you turn off and over the back of the wave when you are finished with the ride (usually done before a close out section). When you are caught inside, you should always paddle away from other surfers and then bail your board safely, making sure no one is behind you. Prone paddling can help, as can kicking your board forward and over the whitewater. There's some videos on SUPboarder Pro and we will also be doing another video about this soon for YT, so keep an eye out for that! Beau.

A common issue is surfers and SUP when paddling out tend not to go wide or take the white water on the head and instead get in the way, near the shoulder. Human nature I guess, take the lazy option to save a few paddle strokes? The advantage is with SUP, most issues can be avoided by going for the quieter spots, like river mouths, where there's a lot of water moving about that keeps the number of prone surfers down, eve logs.
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 жыл бұрын
Great tips Dave! We see it far too many times where paddlers head toward the shoulder, only to get in the way of surfers on the waves. It's all about timing your escape to the channel and not getting in the way, whilst also making sure you're not putting yourself in danger or any risk. That's the best thing about SUP, just paddle to an uncrowded peak somewhere! Thanks, Beau

Let me clarify couple of things. Etiquette is big no matter what you do in life. But in surfing, especially if your not a a local, it is a must. Second to extend my past comment. Don't ignore the technicals and mechanics. Right tool for the right job. In this case, don't use a downwind board for surfing

Luckily for me I surf fairly quiet locations. But what really annoys me is surfers leaving perfectly good waves in the lineup, making everyone else have to wait. I've missed whole sets from surfers deciding they weren't quite perfect enough for them... luckily I'm quite a chilled sup surfer and happy to watch and just enjoy the environment.

I dont mix much with prone surfers..one of the plus of SUP is getting waves prone surfers wont..and when i do mix im extra carefull...sup are big boards ...i try not to be the SUP kook ...at the end its a feeling you know when you are wrong! i saw SUPers out there behaving badly and giving bad reputation to all SUP amateurs..

If I see crowded lineup of surfers, I move to the next beach. Its really hard to enjoy surfing if there are 20 agro surfers trying to hit the same peak. At any rate, the best spots usually have obstructions most surfers don't want to deal with, like reef, rocks or jetties. If the waves are overhead theres also usually bigger breaks outside that surfers don't even bother getting to....of course, if you surf storms, almost no one else is surfing...
@SUPboardermag

So true. I often surf by myself because I go to the next beach. The waves might be as good, but I catch so many waves! Thanks for the tips and suggestions. Cheers, Beau

Often times as a sup boarder you won't even be allowed to participate in the lineup, in terms of slowly moving up to the number one spot. If there's four Surfers out, oftentimes on my sup I'll just permanently occupied the number four position and then just Sprint for waves that the first three people let's go by. While you may not get the absolute best waves this way, you will often get more waves. The prone Surfers will usually leave you alone and if they say anything to you, you're well within your rights to tell them to piss off seeing as you just voluntarily took the lowest position in the pecking order. This is assuming you didn't violate some other rule of surfing!
@SUPboardermag

Great to hear you get your fair share of waves even when being in the number 4 position! I think a lot of people can learn from this. Cheers. Beau

I do miss that at some breaks there are just ass-holes who simply hate supers no matter what they do and you simply ignore them. I found it always funny that when I paddling in on a surfboard I get more "rights" as when i,m grabbing my sup while i,m absolute a lot better at the latter.

Is this a joke? I got into sup because nobody respect or have any ethics in the line up. Iam back up in the food chain at 58 and iam respectful and use all of my knowledge of 50 years of surfing fir everyone safeties etc. My trick is i try to move from peak to peak so i dont feel like a dog. But i never have to do this lineup calculation because after 20 guys in the water nobody respect it anyway. At the end i catch shit loads of waves and that is the price to have done the ultimates sacrifice to have too sup to glide as much as possible before its too late 😂
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 жыл бұрын
Good to hear you move around to find your waves. It’s true that when there is a lot of people in the water, etiquette is reduced, but there’ll still be a pecking order. This is just to let everyone know how it should work out there - but often it doesn’t happen like that so as SUPers we need to be extra careful. If we all had our own peak, that would be nice. Beau

i have never seen anything like this and im nice and friendly and try not to load up on a wave others are on but im not going to sacrifice a wave that im close to peak. you can call me a dick or tell me how i cheated you and i graciously apologize but if you are a local or some other dick that thinks you have priority i gladly show my ground and pound techniques.

Hey Kevin. I guess if you are at your local break and every one is getting waves and the feeling is all good on the water you do what you think is best. But if you do that at some breaks around the world, where people don't know you. When you get in you may find no windows left on your car! At the end of the day if you aren't a wave hog (which you aren't) you will always have good waves and good vibes on the water. Happy SUP surfing . Reuben
