@marharth Yeah I thought that was kinda weird, though I guess it makes sense - Valve are huge JJ Abrams fans, hence the DARMA logo (from Lost) showing up in Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

@darthneji1992 It's a big part of what makes Abrams' work so damned good! It's the interconnectivity of it all, not just between a website and a movie, but between ALL his work! If you want to get the most out of ANYTHING, some work may be required, not physical work, but mental work. If you don't want to think during a movie, may i suggest FastFive?
@09529300312 жыл бұрын
He DID in fact say there were homages, but the definition of an homage is showing respect or honor for someones work, so this movie very well does have homage's to the Spielberg classics of the 80's.

This looks like "Cloverfield" set in a small town. And the title makes me think of the discount hotel chain (which I'm shocked didn't file a lawsuit).
@MrAlexbradley13 жыл бұрын
@darthneji1992 I hadn't changed the subject, the topic was the viral marketing used by Abrams throughout the creation of the film, I merely expanded it. It's not a 'huge part' so much as it is another 'layer,' pardon my phrasing. You don't miss a major plot element, but it's little side elements that just as to the mystery and wonder to the whole atmosphere of the film as a whole. It's those little connections and distinctions between Abrams' works that add to the experience of seeing them!
@4WARD513 жыл бұрын
@DeityZiex Yes, I think it is relevant to me at least. I find a lot of the ridiculous explosion to be annoying and distracting. Were you not given any pause when a truck had giant fireball erupt from it for whatever reason, it derailed a train, and the driver was still alive. Did you not have a problem when the kids were dodging fiery explosions left and right or when a tank shot the home they were in and only one of them suffered a minor leg injury?

I found this film sweet and endearing. The child actors were phenomenal and cast perfectly. I was surprised by the level of profanity in this film to be rated PG13. Nonetheless, it was wickedly interesting ride and I enjoyed it very much.

They don't stop shooting their movie - they work on it through the whole movie and it's even shown at the end - but it's not as much of a focus as the mystery plot takes over.

I actually with the guy on the right for once. I would've loved Super 8 more if it was only about the kids making a horror film and dealing with their family drama. The aliens were just boring and predictable. The aliens ARE a loving homage to Steven Spielberg sci-fi, but it's nowhere near as good.

I both liked and disliked this movie. I thought the first half was absolutely engaging, and somewhere along the way it just fizzled out at the end. The movie felt like a huge portion was missing; too many things were just abandoned. I think this would have worked better with an extra half hour.

Wanted to like this movie but it continually made me think of several Steven Spielberg movies rolled into one. Could have been so original and very scary. Too bad. One hour into this movie and I lost interest in the kids and the plight of the town.

I agree with Ben. This movie wasn't great. The kids were good but the story fell short. The conflict with the alien is short and everything else is just build up. Half way through the movie I found myself just waiting to see the alien rather than enjoying the movie itself. I'd give it a 7/10 at best because I liked kids' acting but the overall movie was good not great.

I’m with Ben Mankiewicz on this one. I felt Abrams would have been better off making this one more of a parody, rather than trying to mimic Spielberg’s work - we’ve all seen his older movies, why revisit them, unless you are bringing something new to the genre. The use of hackneyed stereotypes, such as the out of control military commander, the mean drunk dysfunctional father and a larger version of a monster I think I once saw in an old “Twilight Zone” show, doesn’t help make this one fresh.

HooBoy! The emotionally manipulative methods of Speilberg's movies may have roped me in once upon a time, but are exactly what rub me wrong when I watch them now. I fervently hoped the Martians would kill Cruse and the kid 15 minutes into War Of The Worlds, I wanted to slap the parents silly in Jurassic, and doubt I'll ever make it to the mashed potatoes in Encounters again (unless I'm babysitting). Still, I may see this in a theater. I wish they'd compared it to The Last StarFighter instead.
