Greetings from years in the future to anyone still watching the classics. The switch in Double Dash changes which character is driving and which is on the back. The character in the back determines what special items you get out of the box -- if you have Mario in back, it'll have red fireballs, but Luigi will give the green fireballs. You can also store items for later by swapping a back character with items to the driver's seat.
