My church hosted a Super Bowl party for this game, and we had one side decorated for the 49ers and the other for the Chargers. Jaws dropped when Jerry Rice caught that first touchdown because of how quickly it happened. When Ricky Watters caught that second one, as soon as he crossed the goal line the Chargers poster fell to the ground, no kidding. We joked about, "Maybe God's trying to tell us something."

This was probably the most lopsided matchup in the entire run. Even more than the Bears and the Patriots. The 49ers trounced the Chargers in the regular season. Everyone knew the Niners were going to win big and they did.

+B_side 1986 T Jack Ass wanted as much money as Jerry Rice. He flopped as an Eagle and anything else. To me he was the most hated Niner. Chargers had their chance 79-82. Most royal flops as a young teenager. Still remember that cheapskate owner Eugene Klein giving up on Fred Dean, John Jefferson, Gary Big hands Johnson, Louie Kelcher. 3 of those players would win Superbowls with the Niners. San Diego does not even have a football team. Flops!

So much was made about that 49er offense that the defense may be a little overlooked. Through the 80's and early 90's the 49er offense ranked #1 quite often. The defense however quietly sat at #2 or #3 on a consistent basis.

all the five superbowl 49er teams had something deferent bot it was special that's why they were so dominate they just never flinched especially having George siefert and bill Walsh to me the coaches that made the nfl which is today which are the best two coaches ever for history of the niners
@andyhart38376 жыл бұрын
John Del Van agreed, they talk about Bill Walsh's WCO but no one talks about how George Seifert was actually the architect of Pete Carroll Carroll's cover 3 defense that all of these teams use now. The only difference is the terminology. The Leo is what Carroll calls his work side weak side DE, Seifert called it the Elephant.

@ericisotalo8766 Жыл бұрын
Junior Seau was the most over rated LB of the era if not all time. If you think all 3 of the first 49er TDs were over the middle by mistake, you're wrong. They were sending a message after Junior, who was all talk, said the Niners wouldn't score over the middle. His name was NEVER EVEN CALLED in the game for making a play.

Biggest mismatch in Super Bowl history! The 94 49ers were one of the best teams to play in a Super Bowl, while the 94 Chargers were one of the worst. Going into the playoffs that year I had the Chargers as the weakest team in the tournament. How they beat both Miami and Pittsburgh is a mystery to me because I didn't think that the Chargers had a chance to win either game. But I knew that they had no chance against the 49ers and this time I was right! This game was over quickly!

This was one of the best all rounded Super Bowl teams ever from special teams to offensive line to defensive line two special teams when they got Deion Sanders that was the final piece of their puzzle you just felt so bad for San Diego cuz you know they did not stand a chance they got in a lucky Pittsburgh Steelers would have gotten the same treatment but I think they would have lost even more because Neil O'Donnell was their quarterback and we all know what magic he can do

The 1994 Chargers are also remembered for tragedy in the form of numerous untimely deaths, as eight of the players from that 1994 squad have died prematurely since that time, all by the age of 44. It is part of a supposed locally infamous curse in the San Diego area, involving its sports teams. June 19, 1995 - Linebacker David Griggs died in a car accident when his vehicle slid off a ramp on Florida's Turnpike, linking to three roads just west of Fort Lauderdale and subsequently slammed into a pole, he was 28 years old. May 11, 1996 - Running back Rodney Culver and his wife Karen were among the 110 people (105 passengers, 5 crew members) aboard ValuJet Flight 592 when it crashed into the Florida Everglades, killing everyone aboard. He was 26 years old.[3] July 21, 1998 - Linebacker Doug Miller died after being struck twice by lightning during a thunderstorm while camping in Colorado. He was 29 years old.[4] May 11, 2008 - Center Curtis Whitley died of a drug overdose. His body was discovered by sheriff deputies in his trailer home in Fort Stockton, Texas, just one day after his 39th birthday. One of the drugs he was known to use was Crystal methamphetamine.[5] October 15, 2008 - Defensive end Chris Mims was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment by police officers conducting a welfare check. The most likely cause of death was cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart since he weighed 456 pounds or 207 kilograms when he died. He was 38 years old.[6][7] February 26, 2011 - Defensive tackle Shawn Lee died from a cardiac arrest resulting from double pneumonia. Lee had been suffering from diabetes for years prior to his death. He was 44 years old.[8] December 8, 2011 - Linebacker Lewis Bush died from an apparent heart attack, just six days after his 42nd birthday.[9] May 2, 2012 - Linebacker Junior Seau died in his home in Oceanside, California. Seau was discovered already lifeless by his girlfriend. His death was likely a suicide since a self-inflicted gunshot wound was apparent to the chest. He was 43 years old

Although, no one expected it at the time, this was actually the Swan Song for the NFC's domination. With the exception of the Redskin loss to the Raiders and the 2nd Bengal loss in XXIII, from SB XVI thru and including this one, the NFC won by dominating the O and D lines, sometimes even with inferior skill players (Hostetler, Rypien, Timmy Smith). I believe even in this SB, had Humphries played for the 9ers and Young for the Chargers, while the score would have been closer, the 49ers would still have won, as their supporting cast was so much better (the O and D lines, Rice, Watters, Taylor). I'll grant xxiii was an exception. The 49ers did not dominate in that game and had the QBs been reversed (Montana for Esiason) the 9ers would have lost. That was in contrast to the first Bengals loss where Anderson was a worthy QB, but the Bengals were not really in contention (they never had the lead and only threatened once with their 2nd TD) and only make the final score under 7 with a TD in garbage time . . . While the NFC would win 2 more Super Bowls, they were not of the same dominating character. They won mostly because they had the better QBs, and had to rely on the other teams mistakes (O'Donnell) or special teams play (Howard). That is, while previous NFC teams forced great players (Elway, Kelly, Marino, Thurman Thomas) into mistakes, the Cowboys in xxx won more because of O'Donnell's incompetence compared to Aikman than because of forced errors. While numerous times during their domination, the NFC teams won despite their own special teams mistakes or flat being outplayed on special teams, the Packers had to rely on special teams to win in xxxi. . . . Certainly, in xxx and xxxi, if the QBs were reversed, or the Steelers or Patriots had their future QBs, the scores would have been reversed. . .

Nine have died. •David Griggs, LB, 1995 - car accident just months after this game •Rodney Culver, RB, 1996 - commercial plane crash •Doug Miller, LB, 1998 - struck by lightning TWICE on a camping trip •Curtis Whitley, OL, 2008 - drug overdose •Chris Mims, DE, 2008 - cardiac arrest; weighed 456 pounds and was on disability at the time of his death •Shawn Lee, DT, 2011 - cardiac arrest resulting from double pneumonia; had been diabetic for years •Lewis Bush, LB, 2011 - heart attack •Junior Seau, LB, 2012 - suicide; was suffering from PTE •Courtney Hall, C, 2021 - cause of death evidently not announced, but at least he made it to 50, unlike the others.

Poor Chargers really thought they had a chance against the mighty '94 Niners? Steve Young, Jerry Rice, and Primetime? Oh boy. ;)

Whoever was coming out the NFC meaning Dallas of San Fran was going to win the Super Bowl. The 49ers had destroyed the Chargers earlier in the season and did the same thing that night against them. Steve Young was on a mission to win it all and nothing and I mean nothing was going to stop him that night.
