The celebration in Colorado right after the game was something that I will never forget. To finally have a superbowl victory after so many losses was an unbelievable experience. It was a joyous relief to so many fans to no longer be a punchline for a Denver can’t win a superbowl joke.

It's amazing how many people got stuck with that label about not being able to win the big one....even numerous Hall of Famers, coaches like Shula and Landry, players like Steve Young, all of whom retired with rings...but it was never any more ridiculous than when applied to John Elway...Whether you're referring to tangibles or intangibles, he was the King...
@uss_cushing Жыл бұрын
@@tgriffin3059 That’s because when John had multiple shots and still lost. East and west coast bias is still an extremely powerful factor in Sports.
@tgriffin3059 Жыл бұрын
@@uss_cushing Shula and Landry both built that reputation after getting multiple shots...And Elway's multiple Super Bowl losses were more impressive achievements than any other man's WINS...No team who has been that heavily built around one player has EVER gone that far in the postseason...let alone do it 3 times in 4 years. I've heard it said that Elway's reputation almost suffered from the magnitude of his own greatness, and I'd have to agree. Even now, after winning rings, his reputation is hardly ever what it should be. I could see that coming, though....if you don't have a ring, but are still a big name-like Tarkenton or Marino-people look more closely at your actual game, to see what all the hype is about. But once you get a ring, you're just lumped in with whoever has the same number of rings as you do. So Elway winds up being mentioned with guys like Plunkett and Griese...

I know some will think I am crazy lol, but that season is my favorite, yes, even over them finally winning it all. I guess you just had to witness that '77 season to fully know what I am saying. I didn't know that one of the Packers went up to Alfred Williams and invited him to what was basically a Packer victory party after the game. That's how arrogant the Packers and the NFC as a whole were before that game. People sometimes forget that Denver's win wasn't just Elway's first, but it was an end to an odious streak of 13 in a row for the NFC. That's why they should have done a 30 for 30 on the 1996-98 Broncos. What if I told you....On September 1, 1996, the NFC's days were numbered?
@tgriffin3059 Жыл бұрын
I think the signs were actually there. In the 80's, the NFC had stronger teams. But once the 90's rolled around, things changed. Buffalo was talented enough to win, but just kept self-destructing. Then New England under Parcells and Bledsoe played a great game against the Packers...if you'll recall, the MVP of that Super Bowl was a KICK RETURNER!!! You don't see that if one team is truly superior. So the signs were there.... But as an AFC fan, and an Elway FANATIC...I still didn't believe it til I saw it!!!!!!

There's a little bit of this team on the 49ers this afternoon. Kyle Shanahan as the head coach and Christian McCaffrey taking handoffs. Thst and Deebo Samuel went to my alma mater. I don't root for the 49ers often but I will be today. Green Bay should have been mentioned as part of the revenge tour because of the way the Packers beat the Broncos at the end of 1996. Truth be told, the Packers had a ton to play for in that game while the Broncos had already clinched home field the previous week. Pulling all their starters after the 1st Half was pretty stupid, because it gave the Packers confidence and a psychological edge. There's a fine line between tipping your hand against an opponent you might have to play in the Super Bowl vs. giving them the feeling that they can walk all over you. So, yes, it felt pretty good to watch them get revenge on Green Bay after laying that egg in 1996.

And in 2025-Broncos play their 1st playoff game in 9 yrs.And we have switched roles with '96 Jacksonville-though we aren't QUITE as big of under dog,as they were that day. But in the sense of a young team with ZERO pressure,& 100% house money vs an experienced,veteran team-with all the pressure on them. Buffalo is playing the role of '96 Denver but even arguably has more pressure on them. Mike Shanahan was in no danger of losing his job after our loss to Jacksonville. If Buffalo loses to inexperienced Denver with rookie qb-Mcdermott might be on the hot seat. And at least John Elway had been to 3 SBs,& 4 AFC Title games by 1996. Josh Allen,& the Bills veterans have been to 1 single AFC Title game-that KC killed them in-about 5 yrs ago. Elway actually had pretty much carried 3 mediocre talented teams to SBs they really had no business getting to talentwise. Buffalo has had as much talent as anybody in the AFC-except KC-for like 4 or 5 yrs now. Let's hope today goes similar to that awful day where the heavy under dog shocks the veteran experienced title contender. I think Buffalo will win something like 30-17 but ya just never know. And like that Jacksonville teams-whatever happens today to the Broncos-its been a phenomenal, overachieving season,& today will be a tremendous learning experience for a young team & rookie QB. And the future is definitely bright-no matter how long this run lasts.
