Made these pants but modified the pattern alot and decreased number of stitches to fit my tiny 5 month old grandbaby. I did a red and green strip added a black waistband to resemble a belt and fished red and green tulle to make an elf costume for 5 month old grand daughter. Turned out great. Yes you can do that or don’t decrease just use a slightly smaller hook size to shape the leg and that way you can make it as long as you want

If you crochet loose then I’d say you can make them with dk yarn and a 5mm hook. Or add 4-6 more rows to the waist making sure you have even number of stitches to make it easier when dividing the legs and use a 4.5mm hook. This will make the waist wider and add to the width of the hips. I would also add 2-4 more rows before dividing the legs and make the legs a bit longer as well. I hope this helps 😉
