Super Easy Foamboard Trainer RC Plane! The EZ-PELICAN

This reminds me of my first R/C model in 1961. It was a "Nomad" with a rubberband-powered esapement, 2 AA battery-powered receiver, and push-button rudder-only conrol. The motor was a tractor Cox .020 on a streamlined pylon above the wing at the C.G. It had just enough power to slowly get it up to where I could get into a lot of trouble.

Nice build. I am coming from the multirotor world and wanted to try my hand at a easy to fly budget plane. Nice job overall. I decided to make a few tweaks, building at 70% of the size you did (28"/700mm wingspan), kept the rudder and vertical fin joined during the initial cutting and adding ailerons so that I can practice flying with 4 channels. Planning to run a spare 1105 motor that I have. Also bought a stabilizer to control the flight a little more for a beginner. I will let you know how it goes.

@@BudgeProjects No pics yet. So far just a bunch of cutup foam board and a bag of parts. By any chance did you design the motor mount in Fusion 360? I need to scale it down to 70% size and make sure the mounting holes will fit a BetaFPV 1105 motor. If it came from Fusion I could scale it down really easily. If not I will redraw it based on the STL file. Also considering if I can get the servos further forward. Having fun with this. Thanks!

Now things are coming along. I got carried away and added ailerons to the wing.Just need to finish getting the wiring settles and the e & r pushrods and it's ready to go!

How much size of wingspan, brushless motor kv, and total weight?

1 meter wingspan. I used a 2200Kv motor with a 6 x 4 prop and I think all in it weighed about 400g which included all electrics, but excludes battery ( I added a 2200mAh battery at about 200g in weight)

Needs a bigger vertical stabiliser (fin) because it dutch rolls, nose is a bit short, body maybe short as well for a trainer, construction is very good and solid but you should have flown it more, now I have to fly it mooooore and tweeeek iiiiit...

MY QUESTIONS IS you are using a "pusher" rear mounted engine and does the propeller face forward or backward according to the printing on it? the engine wires need to be switched so the plane is pushing and not pulling but does the the prop need to be altered! most people never discuss this because perhaps its just common sense but i have seen many confusing videos which have confused me! i know i need to change the wires but each prop has its name and what type it is and should this printing go on the front or back of the prop assuming you dont use a special prop which i dont think happens. the direction of the engine needs to be changed and i suspect so does the prop? i think it needs to be reversed??

Hey mate, good question. Imagine the plane has the propeller on the front. With the prop now pushing the plane, the motor moves, but the propeller should still face the same direction according to the plane. So basically direction the propeller points respective to the plane must stay the same.

@@BudgeProjects im sorry im stupid! are you saying just leave the propeller alone! you have to reverse the engine by the plugs to get it to spin in reverse but the propeller stays the same? with the markings on the front of the blade? maybe you should do a video on this. i have seen examples of the prop pushing things by its nature of "turns" it has and if it spun in reverse i dont think it would work?

@@charlesklein7232 thats ok! It's a good question. So the propeller should point in the same direction relative to the plane. So front of propeller points to front of plane. Then make sure the motor turns in the correct direction that the propeller pushes the plane in the right direction. Wish I could do a video but I'm so busy at the moment. :( Since propellers are cheap, why not by a regular and counter rotating pair and mess around to find what works? I actually used a set made for quadcopters here that came with both!

@@BudgeProjects i am in the process of doing that! im using dc 180 motors like dc! going to be going up to a 380 and maybe beyond! whats curious about that is that they use a gear reduction system on the 380 plus for "TORQUE?" dont understand these things at all! dc is cheaper then ac. in regards to the question however it should be noted that the plane will have thrust but only like half so if the propeller is mounted incorrectly it WORKS! supposedly! but not not to maximum lift an this could be confusing supposedly!! im totally new to all of this.

Probably a bit late, but I built this and used a 2200kv motor with a 6 x 4 prop and this works well. I think he uses a 5" prop.

Give the wingspan another foot in length for starters. It's great having a trainer, for first time pilots or for a lazy alternative, having it be a floater is a better route to go, this is too fast for new pilots.

Ignore this guy, he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about 90% of the time. Yet for some reason he goes around to videos like yours where a plane works perfectly fine and tells the creator a thousand things (he thinks) they did wrong, spasmodically yelling in all caps as if he has Tourettes syndrome. If you take a look at his channel to see how great his planes must be for all the talk he's doing, you'll find nothing that actually even flies at all, and a bunch of 'free energy' nonsense stuff that doesn't work either - obviously :) The fact that he's spending time and money actually building it says all you need to know about taking his advice on anything related to physics.

While it did seem tail heavy, hence pitch sensitivity, you don't have to mount the servos more forward. You just need to ensure that you have a battery and components installed in the fuse in such a way that the CG comes out somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 between the leading and trailing edge of the wing. As for thrust line, this should work just fine. A bit of tweaking can assist in climbing tendencies when throttle is applied

@@daviddavids2884 Would it be best if the servos weren't in the tail? Yes, of course. This is a simple foam model, not an SR71...TWO small servos in the tail isn't gonna hurt the plane. I could also show you some other planes that have servos on the tail, such as the Eflite Maule M7. Not sure why you are calling me an idiot here...I've been flying RC for 10 years, including that heli in my channel pic, which as a $2000 Minicopter Diabolo. I also build my own plans from balsa, and Monokote covering. Please explain how you know better than I do.
