Tip for using your flat nose pliers to do the spiral: use painters tape on your pliers so that it does not mar the metal as much. The tape also will add extra grip for the coiling.

You could make one and take notes on the amount you used and wasted and have a better measurement for the next one. Well, I just made a set of little fish earrings and necklace. I had to make a bale that had a loop on the bottom to attached to the mouth end of the fish and a loop at the top for the chain to go through. The fishies are about 2 inches long. Hope this helps!? :}

I LOVE these bails. Thanks for showing us how to do it. Question about using wire pre-antiqued. Are they easy to scratch or nick? Have you ever tried to coat your pliers to help keep from nicking the wire?

Judi Morningstar Thank you Judi. Pre-antiqued wire is just tarnished wire. You will go in after your piece is finished and polish it with the steel wool. What I like about using the pre-antiqued wire is that you can polish as you go along, which is especially helpful when you have layers of wire. It's too hard to get into some of the nooks and crannies but doable in layers. With the frames, you can just antique it when you're done and then polish it up. I would then use pre-antiqued wire for the embellishing. You can put painter's tape on your pliers or dip them in a rubber coating that you can purchase at the hardware store.

Than,k you so much. I always use dead soft whenever I'm doing a lot of bending, twisting, wrapping, etc. I like half hard for earwires and for links. The more you work the wire, the harder it will get which is called "work hardened". In heavier gauges, I never use hard wire.

Depending on what your making, for the round design you can use excess wire for design in front or back of your pendant

Being concerned with wasting, and closely as possible using every bit of material when doing the bail, you could use the excess part of the bail, and add some beading, or wrap them in a unique design within the middle of the frame! That would save as much material as possible really. Just a thought and suggestion. :)

weetzybat Thank you for watching weetzybat. I would love to do anything in stainless steel wire but it is extremely hard to work with, even in the finer gauges. It's super stiff to begin with and then continues to work harden as you manipulate it, making it impossible to do what you want it to. I have never seen stainless steel wire in anything heavier than 18g (I wasn't looking for it either). It's also brutal on your cutters.

What about using *Tool Magic* on your tools? It's a non-permanent rubberised coating that is easily removable. You just dip the end of your tool into the jar and then slowly withdraw it, then stick one handle in a coffee mug or similar to dry overnight (I let mine dry for 24 hours). Beadaholique.com has it for US$13.75: search for item XTL-8017 on their website. Another reason why Liz is not getting scratches is that she is using Lindstrom tools - the Lamborghini of jewellery tools! 😊

Dee Amendt Hi Dee. 18g dead soft wire would not be a good choice for any of these sizes of frames. You could if you went really small, like for earrings or charms (the size of a quarter or smaller). That's my opinion but you are welcome to try it out. Thanks so much for watching.

Dee Amendt 16g and heavier are stiffer gauges even dead soft. You can't hammer/texture the Artistic Wire with your metal hammers because it has a clear coating on it that keeps it from tarnishing. When you break that seal, it turns grey and looks awful. You can use your rawhide hammer to gently tap it to work harden it. Everything is worth a try but the heavier gauge Artistic Wire is expensive and would be a shame if it didn't work out. Make it into a Xmas ornament if it doesn't...lemonade from lemons, LOL.

You might try German Wire (I will be selling it on my website) which is a silver plated half hard copper wire for the frames and Artistic Wire for you working wires inside of the frames. I believe you can hammer/texture the German wire but need to be careful because the plating isn't super thick.

Hi Julie I'm sorry to hear about your current situation. You might try Craigslist for used tools and supplies..maybe you can get them cheap. Metal on metal is what moves the wire and flattens/textures it. You could try a ball peen hammer.

I'm sorry for taking so long getting back to you--I just realized you'd responded to me. My one & only friend loved the little bit of jewelry I WAS able to make with my limited resources. She had to move recently and INSISTED on taking me to Michael's before she left--God bless her. I don't know how much money she spent (she wouldn't let me watch her check out), but one of the things she got me was a hammer and bench block, complete with the cushion thingy. My main problem is wire: We got what we thought was 14-gauge half-hard Artistic Wire (it didn't specify on the package). What I got, however, appears to be full-hard because it's so stiff I can barely bend it. I don't know what to do with it because I'm afraid of breaking the cheap tools I do have. This wire won't even flatten. Any ideas?

Why use a raw hide hammer to straighten it, instead of nylon jaw pliers. Surely you're going to work harden it making it more difficult to work with.

+Linda T I don't use nylon jaw pliers on gauges heavier than 18g. I learned the hard way that it chews up your jaws faster but you can do what you want...no rules. Believe it or not, using the nylon jaw pliers work hardens the wire also but either way produces no noticeable degree...it's just light taps, enough to straighten it.
