Thank you for this video. Before I found video instructions, I found a junk bag of jewelry that had a crumpled up bracelet in it. From there I taught myself how to make the bracelet, and how to make the spirals. Once I made the first three turns on the spiral then instead of using the pliers like you do, I use my thumb and finger to continue making this spiral. I believe it gives me better control.

We've done wrapping by hand at moments like that too and works wonderfully. We tend to use pliers and other tools throught our videos because it helps us show as much of the work on camera as possible instead of covering it with fingers, but hands and fingers are great tools too.

Trying this technique with something that is not a bead will be a lot harder because it is that center wire that runs through the bead which is stabilizing it. My best suggestion would be to take a cut piece of heavier gauge wire and create a loop on each end. I would then find the mid way point of the wire and press that against the midway point of your object.

Hmmm... a round nose pliers is really best for this project since you need to get that circular shape started before you continue with your wrappings. If the initial circle is not even, your entire spiral will be off. Depending on the gauge of the wire, you could try wrapping it around a toothpick or other similar object - but heavy gauge wire will be too hard and awkward to wrap with just your fingers and not having a solid tool to grip it.
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 11 жыл бұрын
I would carefully then start wrapping the object from the middle outward and create enough loops around so as to keep the object in place. Hopefully when you finish wrapping you will end up with a loop at the top of the object and one at the base. There will need to be quite a bit of experimenting done with this and you will need to judge if you feel that the cage is secure enough to actually hold the object in place. It will not look like the example in the video.

It would be a different technique involved if you did not want to have a loop on both ends. I will try and think of a good way of doing it, and if I can, I will add the idea to our request board. I am sorry but right now I can not think of a good way of creating this bead without a loop on both ends (unless you just flattened one of the loops against the spirals).

Great tutorial. Want to try this, but stumped with 1 question: Depending on the bead size, how might you determine the wire length to cut and how large of a spiral to make? Is there a formula or rule of thumb? Don't want to make too big of a cage for small beads or too small of a cage for larger beads. Please advise.

So if you don't want a loop on both ends, can't you use a head pin with a smaller bead between the head pin and the caged bead? Then make the one loop out of the other end of the head pin. Seems simple enough.

Do you have a tutorial of this technique for a smaller, tighter cage? I would like a tighter cage because I want to use up my smaller pieces of beach glass that I have spent countless hours scouring the beaches for. :D I don't want to drill the glass pieces, for fear of them cracking and breaking. Maybe I should just wrap the whole piece? Any advice would be great. Thank for vid!
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 10 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you do not have a drilled hole, then the technique would be different. I can add your suggestion to our video request list. In the meantime, I would suggest trying to wrap the whole piece, if you wrap just a corner or two, it will probably not be stable enough. I think you are smart not to drill the sea glass, I too would be afraid of it breaking.

Great vid, now how do you make a cage for the bead without a hole?basically, how do you make the loop for a chain?
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 9 жыл бұрын
+bullzeye1423 That's a tricky question to answer. It really all depends on the bead shape and if there is someplace to anchor your wire in place of a hole. If it is a completely round bead, it can be incredibly difficult to make a secure cage without a hole. I think you might have to do some experimenting with crossing your wires to create more of a net than what is shown in the video. You could also try making a wrapped wire loop to start with and then wrapping your wire around the bead since you will need a loop of some sort.
