WAO RYU!ONLY in JAPAN

Күн бұрын

Japan's escalators are a microcosm of Japanese society -- uniqueness and creativity, but we also see Japan's politeness, manners and even customer service all on moving steps.
In this episode, we travel to Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo and Kawasaki to see some of Japan's amazing escalators!
★ Puchicalator at Moore's Department Store in Kawasaki City
★ Kyoto Station's Escalator
★ Umeda Sky Building, Osaka (The World's Highest Escalator)
★ Tokyo's multi-level escalator (Kudanshita Station)
★ Spiral Escalator, Landmark Tower, Yokohama
From spiral escalators to escalators that go high into the sky, this program covers them all.
I climbed the escalator in Kyoto Station to the top in this recent video.

In Hong Kong, we have similar rule "stand on the right and walk on the left" But from my personal experience, there were a lot of times people wouldn't stand on one side, and one time a man and his son (a grown up) stands on both sides in the metro/underground station, I said excuse me and sorry as I had to rush to somewhere. At the end they didn't let me, and at the end the old man was saying, "Don't think I'd have to let you go by saying sorry or excuse me!" WTF

garcons79 Yep, some people are rude. Here in Lisbon we also stand on the right and walk on the left, but many people don't respect the rule, specially tourists and people who aren't from the city. Now that it's summer there are tons of tourists in town it is bothersome to try to walk on escalators, you have to say "excuse me" all the time, and some times they are rude and don't move, just like that man.

The HK government actually discourage this rule as they think walking on the escalator is dangerous. I noticed this from a TV ad about escalator safety, and everyone in the ad were standing on both sides of the escalator. Technically the man wasn't wrong but I still think he should've let you go :D

Not only are they entertaining, I'm actually learning a lot, HAHA. I will be visiting Osaka next month and I'm pretty excited for their escalators and food (in your Dotonbori video). Hopefully, I can use the knowledge I've gained from your videos and apply them to my trip. :) Cheers!

If you have time, let me know how your trip to Osaka goes, either here or on our Facebook page: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv I love hearing about visitor's experiences and it helps me think of new things I can highlight as unique for other viewers. Interseting video. The first spiral escalator was most likely the one in a London Underground station (Holloway Road), back in 1906. Although I'm not sure it worked too well, failing soon after inception and closing days after opening. I assumed the idea was a near-forgotten failed expirement, but it's great to see Japanese engineering has turned this engineering obscurity into functioning piece of infrastructure, even if the curve is like more for decoration than practicality!

Washington DC in the US has the unwritten rule that you stand on the right, walk on the left. I say "unwritten" and not "unspoken" because DC has a LOT of unwritten rules, but the populace is so transient that the only way that new people learn the rules is that strangers are VERY quick to fill you in with politeness, or at the very worst, mild exasperation. But the escalator rule is the best of all. First time I did it, the guy a few steps below me said the most DC thing I've ever heard: "hey, don't be a left-stander." I said "excuse me?" He said "I'm sorry, we just stand on the right here. The left is for walkers." After he did his civic duty, he smiled at me, and went back to what people in cities usually do, which is pretend that the people around then don't exist. Very interesting experience. And then we stood there in silence for the rest of the 35 minute journey because holy crap Roslyn station nobody needs an escalator that long

This is an interesting feature short, John. I experienced it first-hand and it struck me as a bit odd that Tokyoites stand on the left, walk up on the right, while Osakans observe the opposite. That said, let me just share this about the 5-step Puchicalator: one of the oddest (and, I thought, funniest) things I saw in Bahrain back in '85 was this 3-step escalator out front of a store in one of the souk's side streets. In hindsight, I now realize that was back when PWD ramps were rather uncommon/not legally required; so, it must've been an accommodation for the elderly who had knee problems mounting steps. As always, watching your vlogs has become a habit and loving every single one of them.

When I travel around in Japan and need to use the escalator, I just kinda look ahead to see where the people stand or walk on the escalator, and then follow suit. Just like the saying, "when in Rome".... also, it makes it appear that I am one of the "locals" living there, and not standing out like a lost tourist, ha, ha.

Nice work. Comparable to how you NEVER stand still on escalators in San Francisco but they do in Seattle, for some reason. What side do they stand on in Kyoto? Same as Osaka?

Here in melbourne we stand on the left walk up the right, but sometimes people stop on the right side to chat to their friends and don't realise they're holding everyone up

+EggiTheShadow yep, even at times cars just stop in the middle of the street to...talk to each other and block the street. this happened to me many time.

lock 22 Hahahahaha, just like how some people when flying planes like to have a chat to others on important radio frequencies which prevent others from giving important information to the traffic controllers
