Terranigma. Total gem. If ever it were to be remade, they need to keep it exactly the same but give it an expansion. More levels that utilize all the available weapons would be great, as would extra boss fights that would require usage of Magirock more extensively. I believe Miyazaki and co. wanted to put more into it but simply ran out of room. There is Cape Town, Yangtze, Balkans, and California, all of which are empty space. Don't get me wrong. On it's own, the game is fantastic. An extra level before reviving humanity would have been a doozy. Reviving plant life, then birds, then animals, something else, such as purifying the oceans and fighting a freaky fish monster. Examining human greed during a California gold rush where extensive use of GeoRings would have been nice. Then the manual shows Ark camped out next to a jetfighter. The rise in technology and its effect on the Earth could have had a level in Yangtze, where you need the Dragon Pike to defeat one of Beruga's underlings. Terranigma was so good, and it left a lot of room to fill in. However, Tomoyoshi Miyazaki has disappeared, Quintet is no more, Timewalk games has folded, and I do not know how to do romhacks or nothing, otherwise I would take up the project myself and come up with Terranigma Expanded.

Terranigma is definitely an RPG. More specifically, it is an action RPG(like Secret of Mana or Ys). Anyone who says it's not doesn't know what they are talking about. Fantastic video! Nice to finally see someone go over all of these. There are such a ridiculous amount of great Super Famicom RPG's that we never got. We did manage to get versions of a handful of them many years later, but I would have loved to have had most of these back in the day.
@JMFSpike
@JMFSpike 8 жыл бұрын
StaySkeptic Yep. Many people consider the Zelda games to be RPG's, but they just don't quite qualify in my opinion. They almost do, but with no stats and no gaining levels, calling it them RPG's is a bit of a stretch. There are only a few swords to acquire to boost your attack, and only 2 tunics(one of which boosts defense, and is the only thing in the game that does so). Anyway, even Nintendo themselves calls them Action/Adventure games. The only one that I'd call an action RPG is Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, but it's definitely a *light* action RPG.
@Shendue
@Shendue 6 жыл бұрын
It's RPGs, not RPG's. RPG's means "of the RPG". BTW, you are absolutely right. Breath of the Wild, tho, definetely adds some RPG elements to the action-adventure structure. There are weapons and armors with stats, random loot, a crafting system, deperible items... I'd still avoid calling it a tout-court RPG, but it has some RPG mechanics in it.
@Ms_Drake
@Ms_Drake 4 жыл бұрын
@@JMFSpike Thank goodness someone says Zelda games are action-adventure games.
@JMFSpike
@JMFSpike 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ms_Drake Yeah, action adventure games often get mislabeled by people as rpgs simply because they have rpg elements in them. It's not just Zelda, but also games like Harvest Moon and even Animal Crossing! Sometimes Harvest Moon can be considered an rpg depending on the game, but most of them (especially the earlier ones) are certainly not. But to be fair, some games are very hard to define as they really blur the line between genres.
@Ms_Drake
@Ms_Drake 4 жыл бұрын
@@JMFSpike Also the Startropics series, Daikatana on GBC, Brain Lord, etc. are action-adventure games. I'll number the differences of an action-adventure game and an action RPG: *An action RPG shows a number when attacking or being attacked by enemies. In action-adventure games, there's no number. *In every RPG, each type of enemy has a different number of hitpoints or health. In action-adventure games, it's just about the amount of hits. *Action-adventure games are more reliant on puzzles. *EXP (it's too obvious) *Shops on RPGs sell replenishment items, weapons, and armor. On action-adventure games, they only sell replenishment items.

For the record job system was introduced (in a very rudimentary version) in FF1, vastly expanded on in FF3, vastly improved in FF5, incrementally improved in FFT and its successors, and shuffled up in X-2. It’s also been used in some games since then, but I’m not al that familiar with them. Regardless, I’d hardly call FF5 unique for simply having it, although it is still one of the best implementations of it to date, and I’d argue it has the second best gameplay of any core Final Fantasy title because of it.

Dallon Verhaeghe I have the physical JP cartridge that I can play through the use of my Retron 5. All the games listed here have English patches that you can use, except Terranigma for some reason.

I've usually used Duran with Angela and Lise/Hawk. Spells and melee? Why not? It's called redundancy. As the Courier said to Arcade, "If Caesar takes the dam and cuts power, it'll be chaos all over New Vegas." I've still never finished Seiken Densetsu 3, though.

FF5 is definitely more hardcore than others, changing jobs and learning the skills from them will determine how rough or challenging the game will be. I love that approach.

"Tales of Phantasia" had some... interesting translation choices. Maybe that is why it comes out as cringeworthy. There's been an article about the translation comparison, too. Because people couldn't believe that the original game had nothing like that. The same team (largely) did an initial translation of "Bahamut Lagoon". That's one of the reasons why I prefer the new one 😅 Amazing list, by the way. I don't agree with some points here, but the choice of the games is great, and you did a good job highlighting why these titles deserve attention.

I would avoid the Playstation version of FF5. The music is awful and the loading time is way too slow.

The music on the PlayStation is the same as was on the Super Famicom, and I agree, the GBA port’s music does sound better overall.

I've played Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia and Secret of Mana 2 and these are really good. I especially loved Star Ocean. Ive also played FF5 of course which has aged quite a bit. Terranigma is one of the massive sales hits in the west and had been available in an original English translation so it's strange to me why this is on the list. It is a must-play of course. I think I will try out the rest that I havent beaten so far :-) Thanks for the video.

For anyone curious about Final Fantasy 5, but wondering if you should play it on the Playstation, the answer is no. Even on the PSN. The correct answer is the GBA port, if you can handle the lower-quality music, or the PC port, if you can handle/mod away the sprites/menus/"design choices", or a fan-translated SNES version, if you can handle the missing content.

I figured that, since there was a Star Ocean: Second Story, there must have been an original. Now I need to find the original, because SO2 is one of my favorites. Like Top 20 or so. Private Actions, the crafting system, character relationships--so much going on in 2 that is interesting and different from other games I've played.

How are you comparing Terranigma to Lufia 2? Their both good games, but not very similar (unless, I guess if you're talking about how both games are puzzle heavy). Should cover Live A eviL, too, if you haven't already considered it.

I can never compare Terranigma with Link To The Past. Perhaps the mechanics are similar, but as RPGs, I find them totally different. As a kid, I very much enjoyed immersing myself in the story and characters. So Link To The Past was one of my least favourite RPGs because of the format of how the game unfolded. I didn't like how it was "story section - dungeon - story section - dungeon - story - dungeon" over and over, like clockwork. Where as Terranigma just felt much more organic. There'd be long dungeon sections, if it made sense to the story, or else long story sections. It just felt a much more interesting pace.

Great list. I personally think FFV is the best Snes FF. The job system is awesome. Treasure Hunter seems nice too, it has towns to visit, which is umcommon in SRPGs and the enemies are visible, so no random battles. Terranigma, Star Ocean and Tales of Phantsia are also great, although the encounter rate in ToP is too high.
