My brother in law flew Helo’s off from US Naval Air Craft Carriers in the Gulf War and the Iraq conflict. He was a Lieutenant JG in the Navy and when a pilot would go overboard, the helicopter would effect a search and deploy divers to make a rescue. He also was in charge of a unit that deployed “Soni-bouys” that were used to detect Soviet Submarines. I really admire the work of these Pilots and Support Staff in keeping the Navy ship shape.

And I’ll go ahead and speak for the rest of every JBD Operator and every crew member by saying “Fuck You”. I was a plankowner on the TR. During one of our operations, I believe it was in the VACapes, an A-6 aircraft made a turn which caused a crew member to be blown off the deck and over the side. I have also experienced having to grab a padeye to prevent myself from being blown away while out there. I have fond memories of watching Tomcats go into afterburner on the catapults. The original engines were a bit underpowered, so they had to use the reheat to get going. This produced a blue flame that shot all the way to the JBD. It was most impressive to see at night. However, once they got the A+ Tomcats, they could launch at full military power, which wasn't as visually stunning.

This is the first video I heard the "holdback" mentioned. 50 years ago the holdback for my TA-4F/J was color coded medium blue/yellow. It is an alloy steel bar machined similar to a dumbbell with a hole through the centerline and a groove in the middle of the 'handle'. The groove thins the wall to the centerline hole so it is strong enough power to "holdback" the aircraft at full power, but will only break if the catapult provides enough power to accelerate the aircraft to a speed above stall. I do not know where the holdback is attached on today's aircraft, or if is similar to what I described. I do still have my half from my last cat shot. So many things have to come together to safely launch an aircraft into the sky.
@GrowlerJams Жыл бұрын
