17:00 Nothing sucks more than noticing a typo after already uploading a video. I really need to do a better job proofreading these.

Both you and those commenters were onto something. Mario 64 is not a great game to play off original hardware, or ay least not without a 64-like controller. The well around the stick wasnt round, it was a polygon, with defined directional grooves you could quickly and easily guide your stick into for precise and easy to replicate inputs. I played tf out of M64 as a kid, but playing it on emulators is miserable. The movement isnt janky... when you're provided with the tools to do it easily.

The amount of times I meant to Long Jump in this game only to accidentally Ground-Pound because Nintendo mapped both moves to the same two buttons, with identical input sequences and time sensitivity at that, is so aggravating. I don’t hate Mario 64 (you’d be pretty hard-pressed to find anyone who genuinely does), and I have a lot of respect for the game for how much it revolutionised 3D analogue movement, but my God is it over-hyped as hell and this is coming from someone who’s fully completed it 3 times each on different official releases (OG hardware, 3DAS and NSO) to try and enjoy it as much as most others do. Most of the integral design flaws of SM64 would honestly be more acceptable in retrospect if they were just contained to itself, but none of them were amended until Odyssey nearly *20 YEARS LATER* despite RareWare figuring it out only a few years max after SM64’s release on the same console: - Banjo-Kazooie in 1998 kept you in the world you were playing after getting a Jiggy - DK64 in 1999 got rid of bottomless pits barring the main area of Creepy Castle and lives in an Open-Ended 3D Platformer to further encourage exploration - Banjo-Tooie in 2000 culminated and further refined all the advancements and improvements from the prior two games and completely got rid of precision platforming segments both to not have unfitting elements in the type of game it was and to create a more cohesive immersive grander world I’m sorry (not sorry), but in almost every aspect Mario 64’s just been completely BTFO by most other games identical in structure barring aspects outside of itself like the Speedrunning and Modding communities.
