I grew up playing the N64 version and I also have beaten it with 120 stars but, in my opinion DS version is way better except for the pixelated textures! In 4k resolution both versions look much more beautifull! Nice video, great work my friend!

The DS version is better and worse looking at the same time. On one hand the character models are vastly improved. On the other, the textures looked a lot worse in many cases. I think the N64 was able to blend them better so they didnt look all blocky and pixelated. Controversial opinion, but I think the N64 version looks better

Did you know the DS models actually have less polygons? That's what happens with 6 years of extra experience in 3D model design.

It's not a controversial opinion. The DS is missing all the lighting effects leaving it looking bland and flat, metal mario, the metallic water effects and the water wall have significantly downgraded effects. Most of the particle effects are gone. The redesign looks generic. The grainy textures look horrible on the DS version. And a plus now, with an ultra HDMI modded N64 combined with Everdrive Mario 64 can be played with deblur on and AA off leaving a much sharper, with detail resolved from even the most simple textures.

The textures are actually better on the DS, the N64 just has bilinear filtering on it, which makes it look much better.

@@luc751 the textures are the same quality, they only look blurry on the Nintendo 64 because it put bilinear filtering, which is ''supposed'' to make the textures look smoother, but ends up making them look blurry.

Yo he crecido con la versión de Nintendo DS, y hace poco pude probar la versión de Nintendo 64, en Super Mario 3D All Stars. Me es raro el no tener a otros personajes, pero me gusta que ahora sea portátil y puedas llevarlo a donde quieras. Las texturas de NDS a pesar de no tener filtrado tienen mucho mejor resolución y se ven mas detalle, incluso me atrevo a decir que hay capas de texturas agregadas, cosa lógica ya que N64 estaba limitadisima por el cartucho.

At native resolution, you'd have to be insane to think N64 looks better. DS obviously does a terrible job at textures and texture filtering, but overall it presents itself much more nicer than N64. Maybe a texture modification could improve it

At native resolution N64 does look better. It runs at 320x240p whereas DS 256x192p.

@@ha1vorsen The figures you mentioned... wouldn't that be 25,000 extra pixels for N64 (76,800) than DS (49,152 - or 64% of N64 capabilities?)

@@niallmcardle7 I missed the word "rows", but the principle remains. N64 is less detailed, but gets away and looks pleasing with using more simple shading and flat color textures. Adding any form of antialiasing or texture filtering would further prove that.

Super Mario 64 es uno de mis juegos favoritos de Nintendo y fue mi infancia. Me pareció malazo que le agregaran más personajes junto a otras cosas para la DS, prefiero la jugabilidad original sólo con Mario, sobre todo porque podías usar todas las gorras sin necesidad de cambiar de personaje. Y me pareció un gran desperdicio que fuera re-hecho para la DS, ya que si lo hubieran re-hecho para la 3DS así como lo hicieron con Ocarina of Time y Majora's Mask que también son de 64 les hubiera quedado un producto mucho más logrado.

The mario 64 ds textures are better, the difference here of why they may look worse here, is simple Mario 64 uses point 3 texture filtering which is usually done by the N64's hardware, while Mario 64 DS goes for Nearest Neighbour, basically if you were to just take the SM64 DS textures and slap them into Mario 64 they'd get the point 3 texture filtering treatment, which may or may not be better looking depending on preference, for me, I like both but I'm gonna say this, the SM64 DS Bob Omb Battle Field is more accurate to the original SGI rendition of Bob Omb Battlefield and it looks like it makes more sense as why the hell are there are rocks from the third bowser fight?
