Super Mario Bros 2 (NES) - Overworld Theme (All Instrument Cover)

Here's the iconic theme from 1988's mega NES hit, Super Mario Bros 2! This tune is a classic of classics composed by Koji Kondo (composer for the original Super Mario Brothers soundtrack as well as a slew of other works). In spite of being a very playful tune, the composition is complex featuring counterpoint harmony, chromatic dissonance, and a walking bass line. This whole arrangement is packed into about 40 seconds, sophisticated yet concise!
Having recently covered a number of pretty deep cuts from several different videogames, I wanted to take a hack at tune that's probably over covered. For the trills during the verse section, in order to play the wide intervals quickly enough, I had to play them via guitar tapping which didn't quite get the crispiness I was looking for, so I added a layer of piano to the trills as well. I layered some additional piano and synths to preserve the honky tonk playful sound of the original soundtrack to blend with the guitar and bass. Lastly, I tried to fill out the drums by preserving the light swing feel of the original tune, but on the 2nd go around, I filled it in with double bass, because why the heck not?!
I enjoyed putting together this song, even though it's already been covered by everyone and their mother, because it's a great tune, that's why it's so often covered! Hopefully you enjoy my quick version, if so, consider subbing to the channel!

Cheers! That's a spot on observation, the dissonances are more akin to jazz while the general use of harmony are classical in nature

Thanks! That was the funnest part putting the drum part together, figuring out how to keep a hint of that swing in there, oddly enough it worked out better with the double kick!

Awesome cover! What's the red plastic strip you have on your guitar?

Thanks! That's actually a velcro strip, used like a fret wrap to minimize excess string noise when tapping. It's almost a necessity for the double neck FM Guitars. Check out Felix Martin and FM Guitars on youtube to check out some of those, really cool artists!
