i am not having a fever dream. i received a pirated copy from China and you can select the level you demonstrated when you stand on the first block right after you started 1 player game. Press a at this position which allows you play mario bros classic in 2 player mode starts you off at the unused level in 1 player mode in this pirated version

Nicely done! You mentioned that this setup isn't RTA viable; I wonder if something's possible in 7-1 with a similar effect... I may check that out. Great videos as always, keep it up!

Oh you could definitely do something in 7-1, but you only have about 6 bytes that are RTA feasible. I decided to do this in 1-3 instead of 7-1 because the unused level exists under the world 1 START tile, so I'm already in world 1. There could probably be a ridiculous 7-1 setup where you set mario's position to (20, 40) while setting the world to world 1 and still running JSR $8712, but it sounds way too complicated, and I could cut out a step by already being in world 1.
