love hearing all the technical explanations. They really put a lot of thought into making a quality game, since Mario 3 did stuff it shouldn't have been able to.

I watch these runs while doing copyist work. Breaks the monotony. And I really enjoy the guy giving technical commentary. As for the people saying he doesn't have social skills...he's sitting in front. Nobody behind him is saying "shut up." People are asking questions TO HIM ABOUT THE GAME. Last time I checked, answering questions is socially acceptable. He didn't talk that much, comparitively. JFC people complain about everything nowadays.

Natural selection has produced a generation of facile hedonists who think information cannot produce pleasure and have no intrigue in the function of the world around them. I have been a programmer for many years and am going to school for a bachelors in science for computer science. Watching this run inspired me to begin my own reverse engineering project of Jnes SMB3 simulation and I am currently documenting the 65,535 byte memory page dedicated to SMB3 in memory. In the process I may also produce documentation for Jnes and its software representation of the NES' original hardware processing. Cheers from Canada.

I really enjoyed the guy on the left that shared all the facts about the NES, I found it very interesting. I never really realized how much the game pulled a few tricks out in order to achieve what seems so simple, but infact is playing on the capabilities on the NES.

Mario 3 had an extra mapping chip allowing it to do two things, it could scroll in both left/right and up/down directions at the same time (diagonals) and it could use some of that to do some interesting scrolling bg effects.

Also notice how all the BG animated enemies (in the water stage with the jellyfish and the black piranha plants) are always on the same animation frame. This is much easier to do and they all draw from a single graphic that is simply changed and put into the tile array. Interestingly enough, SMB3 isn't the only game that can do masses of animated BG stuff like this, Megaman 2 (metalman stage is a great example) has a TON of animated background stuff, albeit with fewer frames on most of it. At the time, this hardware and the cart memory to support it was quite expensive. SMB3 was also ~$60 on release if I remember correctly because of this.

Even if the people in the room seemed bored by the hardware-commentary (I didn't notice myself) this was a live-stream -- the people in the room aren't representative of everyone who was watching at the time. I know he wasn't really honouring his original proposal and was instead giving ad-hoc commentary, but personally I found it fascinating. When you have a guy as knowledgeable as that, why not take advantage of him? I hope he comes back for a game or two in upcoming GDQs.

Commander Keen had a neat system where it would only update the pixels that actually changed color. This worked well on the older keen games where you had large single-color backgrounds. Later games had the benefit of better processing and math-coprocessing and better code in general. The NES has specific dedicated hardware mappers that were made to move the tiles around instead of having to literally process the scene pixel by pixel with a single non-dedicated chip, so it could scroll things a lot better than existing PC hardware at the time. A detailed explanation of this is in the book 'Masters of Doom'.
