When I played this level as a child, after about one or two tries, I figured out that the secret was on the ceiling - but my trick has always been to save the P-wing for this level (that's how I first beat this level as a child, and that's how I always have).

Go into the golden brick room, hit the P-switch to turn them all into coins, collect as many as you can, and then repeat until time runs out.

That's a feature of the tanooki suit. You press down and B to turn into the statue, which temporarily protects you from enemies, projectiles, etc.

When I first got this game as a kid, I was convinced that I've got a damaged copy, due to lack of enemies and lasers in that giant room XD I just skipped it with a cloud, because I couldn't find a way out!

Just got to this level and its 2018, lol. I hadn't ever played super Mario lost levels, 3, 2, and the very first one, so I bought super Mario all stars, and finally got to this level. I used 3, THREE! P RACCOON SUITS, to break every block in the room. I kept flying around, looking for a way out through the ceiling, and thought, I don't have to take this! I'm going to KZbin it, so that's why im here.

I always found this fortress in particular to be rather ominous and spooky because of the lack of enemies inside(except the boss of course). But I suppose Nintendo wanted to go for a more lonely/haunted setting with this fortress specifically. Kind of like a "liminal space" feel to it.

By the way, you can return to thr switch and keep hitting the Pnswitch to turn the blocks into coins... 100 coins equel 1 life. I just got 40+ lives by gathering as many coins as I can before the level timer goes off. Every time I go back into the room I gather about 230 coins, which automatically converts to 2 lives, plus 30 coins toward my next life. Awesome way to get ahead in the game. ;)

As a kid it took me an entire Saturday afternoon and almost 40 lives to find that fucking tube! As I roamed the level I couldn't understand why I returned to the same point again and again as I was walking in circles. And the fact the fortress was empty of creatures gave it a creepy atmosphere. No doubt one of the bests levels of the whole mario saga ever crafted.

This castle had no enemies, only enemy on this level is the timer count down, the time is shorter than other levels, and player first time play this level don't know where is the hell way to meet boom boom

You can also transform into a statue in the air, land on, and kill most enemies. Whatever the statue doesn't kill, the sledgehammer suit will, however the hammer suit can't fly. If you duck down with the hammer suit, you can block small fireballs. Hands down, best two suits in the game.

Just played this level and completed it on my second try by using a Raccoon suit from my inventory and coming across the pipe I needed. So I looked up the level to see what I was supposed to do, turns out it’s just what I did but with extra steps This would have been practically impossible to solve if I didn’t have that spare raccoon suit

That's the tanooki suit, which lets Mario temporarily turn into a statue to avoid damage.
