I just thought that when it switches to FM, it sounds similar to the Fortune Street mix.

@Alexander Merchan Sadly just with soundfonts. I still need to get into the right tools. I stopped using soundfonts for 8bit remixes tho anf currently use a plugin that emulates the NES soundchip. Still on my way to find better solutions tho.

Some fun facts: The Master System's PSG and FM implementation is the same as what the MSX PSG and that one MSX FM add-on is, so this is effectively also an MSX remix. Similarly, the FM implementation in Lagrange Point is derived from the above FM tech, so technically any remix like this is also a VRC VII remix. It's a little different though; the VRC VII uses less (!) channels and has different instruments from the normal tech.

And the PSG part also technically a Coleco Vision remix...

Ever since Super Mario Bros. has been fully decompiled, it would be interesting to see a port for the Master System / Game Gear. Hey, if they made a port for the Mega Drive (which had a 68000 CPU) and even the Commodore 64, surely they could do the same for the Z80.
@X-RAGE3 жыл бұрын
If done right, the Master System port could be better than the NES version since the SMS has better hardware

FM Sound: Super Mario Bros Hack for Genesis
@xLeNnUx10 ай бұрын
Hello @Automusic, I wanted to ask you a big favor. Would you be able to recreate the first song from Stage 1 of Super Adventure Island by Snes for the PSG master system? I would thank you very much!!! I'm doing a hack for the Adventure Island for master system and I wanted to put the songs from Super Adventure Island in this hack. I would thank you very much and give credits. Thank you very much.

The PSG version has notes going below A2. I don't think the square waves on the SN76489 can do that. Did you use some trick, or just take liberties with it? Not knocking it at all, though. It sounds great!
@Automusic3 жыл бұрын
I guess, I didn't do the research. I'll try to stick with accuracy next time. Is there any site with good documentaion about the SN76489's limitations? I'd love to read through that.
@TheNuje3 жыл бұрын
@@Automusic Ok, to be a bit more accurate, the SN76489 can't do tones lower than that on the Master System, as it's bound to the clock speed of the CPU. The chip's data sheet is readily available online if you need more info, but I have a frequency table for the chip running on a Master System somewhere that I can find and send you a bit later if you like!
@TheNuje3 жыл бұрын
@@Automusic Input clock (Hz) (3579545) Frequency (Hz) = ---------------------------------- 2 x register value x divider (16) This is the formula based on the Master system's clock. And as per the Sega Mark III's (Sega Master System's) documentation, the frequency is a 10 bit value. Hope that helps!

What does PSG and FM means?
@Automusic6 жыл бұрын
PSG stands for "Programmable Sound Generator" and describes the sound chip of the Master System, wich had similat capabilities as the NES sound chip, but slightly inferior. FM stands for "Frequency Modulation", which is a techinque, which wa used in a lot of keyboards. The same technology was used in the SEGA Genesis and also in an addon for the Master System, to have better sound. This is a bit simplified, but you get the idea.
