Man I really really love this. . I've tried playing the original SMB Special before but it's very hard to get used to the various limitations of the system it's on, but transferring it so faithfully to SMB1's engine like this but with everything unique intact is just what I've always wanted to see. And the game itself is really sick -- there's more different about it I feel than the true sequel or many player hacks over the years, just little things as Kosmic menetioned like all the unique block patterns or how seemingly every single pre-flag staircase or bonus area is totally unique, some really cool ideas like the 'sub-water' blue areas and levels-within-levels kinda like SMB3 and World do, awesome powerups including what seemingly inspired Nintendo themselves to make the P-Wing, cute easter eggs, and even these little touches like allowing multiple powerups onscreen simultaneously and actually being able to hurt piranha plants with shells... all around way cooler and better than I frankly expected going in to this vid, and now I gotta play it myself!

6:23 Yeah, in the real SMB Special, you didn't have to be standing on ground to enter pipes like in SMB1, so you could actually go through both those pipes (8-4 in the PC version actually requires this, there's a pipe just in the wall above lava and no ground to land on, you just jump into the wall and hold right and you still enter the pipe).

2:36 Yeah, many of the levels in SMB Special are just altered/remixed versions of levels from SMB1 (though some of them are pretty creative in how they do it) as it technically was a "port," so yeah, many little sections like that are VERY similar or even identical to SMB1. Same reason why 1-3 is almost identical. It looks like Hudson when making this "port" was just trying to recreate the levels roughly, but doing a 1-to-1 recreation would be too tedious so they got the basic level structure, then decided to do their own spin on said levels and also add some completely brand new ones. Like how 8-1 is basically original aside from the row of bricks with the star somewhere in the level, while 8-2 is basically a remixed SMB1 8-3 but with arguably more interesting tiling with the brick wall because it has an actual castle building in it.
@whoeverest_the_whateverest3 жыл бұрын
Wait. If it's just a port in the first place originally, how many of the new things (enemies and powerups) that is introduced in this romhack were actually in the original game? (SMB Special I mean, not SMB)
@legoboy71073 жыл бұрын
@@whoeverest_the_whateverest Everything new that this rom hack introduces was in the original Smb Special. What I was saying though was that the original Smb Special was technically a pc "port" (in quotes because they built it from scratch since they couldn't actually port smb1 to the pcs of that day) of smb1, as opposed to really a sequel proper, but where Hudson decided to remix much of the game so that it has many differences and new stuff.
@whoeverest_the_whateverest3 жыл бұрын

30:11 Yes, it does do that whole ending sequence with the credits on the original. As for warps...there are no warps. Icicles debuted in Mario Bros., reappeared in Special, eventually appearing in NSMBWii, then 2 and U, then SMM2. Their appearance and behaviors in SMM2 are based on U, which is the same as Wii and 2. Despite huge icicles existing in all 3 New series games, you cannot use mushrooms on em. If only, as the big ones don't shatter upon landing, and instead bury themselves in the floor, acting as platforms. Those would've been great in SMM2.

Edit: Whoops, I typed this just before I got to the point in the video where someone in chat pointed this out lol. 5:10 The reason the flagpole, castles, and well, everything that goes to the top of the screen is a block shorter is because the screen on the PC-88 and SharpX1, which the real SMB Special was made for, was a block shorter than the screen for the NES, the aspect ratio was very different and all. Whereas the NES was 4:3, the PCs were widescreen but also a tile shorter, so Hudson had to fit everything into that and had to lower some things. Super Mario Bros. Crossover, when it added SMB Special as a map, tried to raise things back up again, but in doing so actually created a softlock in 1-2 so yay. In this romhack it says accurate to the real SMB Special.

@ZX3000GT13 жыл бұрын
The unfortunate reason being a lot of PCs of that era didn't have hardware scrolling capabilities, since most of them were made as business PCs in mind (especially Japan and their reliance to high-res display to properly display Kana/Kanji characters).
