This was shortly after Wii Sports existed at the market and made it quintuple in size (or whatever the numbers are), there was a _major_ influx of people who had no clue how to play games other than just barely managing that one Wii game, and Nintendo wanted in on it.

I did. I actually found it very useful, and for a while, I actually liked the DVD more than the game. Nowadays, I’m more interested in the game itself, especially when I get prepared to grind out my gameplay for ages to play The Perfect Run.

What I feel a lot of comments here are missing is that the Wii had a massive market of players who had never played games before, let alone 3D platformers. Kids tend to be much more willing to play around and figure things out than adults, and take to new devices and controls more readily. If you've ever seen someone who didn't grow up playing games pick up a 3D game like this for the first time, you've seen that there's a lot of stuff we take for granted as "how games work" that a new player just... hasn't ever seen before. Now, does that automatically justify a 25-minute instructional video? Not really, especially in a game as well-designed as Galaxy 2. But for some learning styles, watching a tutorial video is substantially better than jumping into the deep end and trying to figure out which controls do what-much less stringing inputs together for more complex movement. This is absolutely a bizarre piece of Mario history, but it doesn't deserve ridicule just because you might not have needed or wanted it.

I didn't. Luckily, my copy of Mario Galaxy 2 came with this disc. Years later when I played the first game, I couldn't even figure out how to continue playing the game after getting to the Observatory. I don't exactly remember, but I'm willing to bet this disc is the only reason I was able to even play the game at all.

I vibe with this. When I was a kid it took me a month to begin playing sonic generations because every day after I got home from school I would spend a few hours trying to figure out how to enter green hill zone. The answer was pressing up. It took me a month of daily, 3 hour play sessions to figure out how to move the left stick up. Even though the game has an indicator for Pushing the left stick up. I didn't even figure it out in the end I just got my dad to do it. I had the same problem with the first Mario Galaxy, except I never figured that one out until mario 3D all stars released. Tldr: yes, this type of stuff is absolutely necessary.

As a British citizen who had access to this disc I can confirm that it was probably necessary for me. I didn't have a tutorial like this for the first game and as a result, never got to the second galaxy because I couldn't figure out how to even enter a galaxy.

Ok i understand that this is made for kids and not a guy in his mid twenties. But most of this seems like so much "no shit" and almost condescending to kids. I understand they want to explain everything but kids can learn and i don't know about you but as a kid i would spend the first part learning the controls so i knew what everything did.
